This Book is Overdue

I loved This Book is Overdue. I loved it more than her book about obituaries, which I liked quite a bit. I’m a fan of obituaries. And librarians. But I like librarians more. A lot more.   Anyway, this is a nice look at what libraries and librarians have to offer – it isn’t JUST old fashioned books, it’s info of all kinds and all types.

I loved her looks at some of my favorite librarian bloggers, especially the Happyville Library blog. I miss it so much… but I love If I Ran the Universe, too. It was nice to see a writer feature my favorite bloggers – and really get it, get them, get what it’s all about.

Thank you Marilyn Johnson. And thank you librarians.

A Spoonful of Poison

Before I blog about A Spoonful of Poison I have to blog about the Glenview Public Library because we got this book from the library. Which isn’t all that surprising BUT what is surprising and interesting is that it cost us $1 to “rent” this book from the Glenview Public Library.

When we picked it up off of the shelf, we didn’t notice the word “rental” on the spine. It was only when we got to the counter and the librarian said “this is a rental, can only be held for seven days, cannot be renewed and costs $1” that we noticed it.

I paid the dollar because I was interested to see just what kind of book the Glenview Public Library considers good enough to slap the word “Rental” on – and charge $1 for. Ummm, I should have put it back on the shelf. It just wasn’t that good. Certainly no better than any other cheesy murder mystery series and possibly worse than most cheesy murder mystery series.

I still don’t understand why some books are given “Rental” status and others are simply given the “7 day book status”. I will be watching for the word “rental” on the spine to see if it becomes clearer to me but I somehow doubt I’ll be paying the $1 again any time soon to “rent” a book.

Anyway, about Spoonful of Poison – errr ok, cheesy murder mystery series, I think TW said it was number 19 in the series. Interesting – never heard of the author, (though the book indicates she’s a NY Times Best Seller), never read any of the other books and I’m guessing if we’d read more of the books we would have understood just why people seem to react so negatively toward Agatha Raisin right off the bat. And also why there were so damn many miscellaneous characters.

Ho hum.

It’s official

Last week TW and I went to the Illinois DMV in Niles and got our Illinois drivers licenses. We had to take a damn written test. And when I say written test, I mean written – as in using a paper and pen. No computer generated tests for us here in the big city suburbs, sheesh. TW missed two multiple choice questions and I missed two road signs. Thank goodness we didn’t have to take the threatened driving test (Threatened because the Illinois DMV info says “possibly a driving test”.)

We walked out with our new licenses and felt a little ill about the whole thing.

To shake off that queasy feeling of being “official” Illinois residents, later the same day we went to the Glenview Public Library and got our new library cards. Having those in our wallets really does make our residency here official. And, it makes us feel like we’re settled (even with boxes still left to unpack.)

I’ve got YA books for the Printz Award challenge waiting for me to pick up at our new library. TW has a pile of books by her bedside and the pressure of having to read most of them within seven days due to a less than liberal check out policy. I can now happily check my library account every day like I used to do in Gainesville. Life is more normal now than it has been for months.

Yay for normal. Thank GOD for libraries.

Rainbow Distractions

I am having some trouble concentrating on my work. I look up, see the bookshelves all messy and unorganized and start pondering just how to get them organized. I’ve already insisted on organization by color – but do I want to do genre and color? And should it be a mish mash of shades or should the shelves move light to dark or dark to light. I’m constantly getting up and adding books to the shelves, or moving a book from yellow to orange or blue to green or changing which books sit side by side because their shades clash.

Distracted. Very distracted.

A cool library tool

I occasionally leave a comment on my friend (from us/them) Ed’s blog and I’ve linked him over here on various topics, including the ever popular search term “discardia”. He has linked to my posts about my bookshelves by color or my library. I often spurl things I’ve found by checking out Ed’s delicious links. Ed is part of my blog community and part of my books community. Because of this, I have an awesome new tool that has improved my life. I don’t think I can even begin to explain how this one tiny thing has made a difference. It hasn’t solved the energy crisis, brought about world peace or provided me with winning lottery numbers (nobody wins those things anyway) but it has made me smile. A lot. And given TW more control over her reading list and taken full responsibility off of me.

Christina found me through Ed. Christina used to live in Gainesville, though she doesn’t live here now. She used to work at the Alachua County Library (which is my library, the one I love and often blog about). She wrote a script that she wanted me to try. I tried it. It didn’t work quite right. The next day, she had me try it again. It worked. Oh my how it works!

If I look at a book on Amazon with this nifty little Amazon Gainesville Library Greasemonkey script installed text will appear on the Amazon page, underneath the title of the book, that tells whether it is available at my library. If it is, I can click the link right there on the page and it will let me reserve it immediately. No clicking back and forth. No searches on the library website (which can occasionally, ok often, be slow). No moving back to Amazon to save the title on my wishlist when I discover my library doesn’t have it.

And, what’s really cool is that TW has the script and can reserve her own books! We’re not used to this system yet and every now and then TW sends me an email or an AIM asking me to reserve a book. That makes us laugh.

Christina is cool. Ed is cool. My library is cool.

FoLS

It’s that time of year again, it’s time for the Friends of the Library Sale! Yea! We were out of town over the weekend so our first trip was today after work. I went armed with a list of Animorphs for RJ and a list of possible poets for Michelle. We spent $24.50, donated $1.50 to whatever worthy cause the FOL folks have decided on (something related to military service folks I think) and we came home with 25 books…
