Daily Dose of Cupcake Toppers

198size.jpgHappy Roller Skating Month! Yea roller skating! Maybe my ankle will miraculously heal and I can go skating to celebrate! Probably not. So you can just make roller skating cupcakes for me instead, how’s that? OK fine, just make them for the next roller skating birthday party you throw and if you have kids, you know you’ll be throwing at least one of those parties in your lifetime. You can’t beat these Roller Skate Charms at $17 per dozen, including shipping!

Daily Dose of Confusion

Someone on a search engine wants to know which came first, Slurpee or Icee? Well, that’s like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. OK it’s not the same thing but it’s just as confusing and debatable. Contrary to popular Flamingo House opinion, ICEE and Slurpee are the same thing.

I give you evidence of this unpopular fact – Slurpee history and ICEE history. Omar Knedllik invented the machine that made the frozen “concoction” in 1959. In 1965, the machines were sold to 7-11. In 1965, the trademark “Slurpee” was born.

Now when I was a child watching Happy Raine and longing for her to give me a coupon for a free “frozen concoction from 7-11” they were originally called ICEE and I did not like it one bit when they changed to SLURPEE. In fact, I still dislike “SLURPEE” even though I’m grown up and should understand it’s just a name. IT IS JUST A NAME. They are the same doggone machine. Same doggone ingredients. Polar Bear on the cup does not make it taste different. So there.

Daily Dose of Television – Gilmore Girls

Emptychair
Last night was a big, big night at the Flamingo House. The Gilmore Girls (and the rest of the Stars Hollow folks) are back! Yea!  Life doesn’t get any bigger or better than that.  It’s been so longgggg!

Last night was also a sad night at the Flamingo House.  Michelle was not home to watch GGs with us.  That. Was. Sad.  Almost too sad to take.

Tuesday night is moms and me night.  Before Michelle had two moms, it was mom and me night.  And before that, it was mom and sister and me night because Jenn always watched it with us in NJ.  It’s tradition.  Seven years of tradition we’re working on.  And she missed it last night.  HMPH.

Let me do a mini review  to take my mind off of missing Michelle. (Michelle, stop reading if you haven’t watched the tape – anyone else who taped or Tivoed, stop reading)

First monologue of Lauren Graham with Suki.  I didn’t like it.  The whole Luke/Car analogy thing.  Lauren Graham was trying too hard with crap writing. Lorelai can do some great things to an analogy, but that wasn’t hers.   After that… smooth sailing.

Loved every supporting cast moment – Paris, Suki and Michele, Taylor and Kirk, Miss Patty, Gypsy, even Kirk’s g/f.  I’m falling out of love with Sally Struthers and I’m not sure why.  Babette is boring me.  It’s probably just me.

I loved the Twilight Zone rocket but am apalled that Rory took that long to figure it out.  I’m thrilled with her last scene with Logan on the phone.  Time for Rory to learn a lesson and be a big girl.  Running off to London – WRONG move.  And Lorelai, for suggesting it – bah.  There is such thing as "too much nice mom".

Now, about Luke/Lorelai/Christopher.  Christopher is slimey.  I have never liked him.  Ever. I do not like him now.  That little shudder Lorelai did after getting out of his house – that’s how I feel anytime Christopher is in a scene.  Now the previews indicate Lorelai is going to be 16 again and screw up her life once more, and do it with Christopher.  Tell me it will be Emily who does what she should have done 20 years ago… In the meantime, I am not sure how much Christopher and Lorelai I can take.  I’ll enjoy seeing Luke suffer though – he is going to suffer right?  He’s not gonna fall into bed with April’s mom, right?  He’s been a jerk but he’s smarter than that – smarter than Lorelai in this area.

Yea GGs is back.  Sniffffff I missed watching it with Michelle.

Marlon Brando? Fan-Tan!

The most interesting thing about Fan-Tan was the “afterword” (if you get this book, read that first!)

The second most interesting thing about Fan-Tan was the cover.

The third most interesting thing about Fan-Tan was really only interesting after I read the “afterword”. The story itself. Interesting. But not really interesting until you put the whole Brando/Cammell thing together.

It wasn’t a bad book but not a great one either. I think it would have been a good Brando movie, too bad it didn’t work out that way. Nice pulp fiction feel. One good sex scene. (Good as in well written and interesting and not run of the mill sex.)

Check this one out at your library. Or if you are a Brando fan (are there any Cammell fans?) buy it. I think you’ll be glad – but read the “afterword” first.

Daily Dose of Sleep

It’s bed time. I don’t care if it is only 10:17am, it is still bedtime! That’s what happens when you wake up at 2:13am with a headache. A headache that is either a brain tumor or a sinus headache, those are the same thing, right? Tylenol at 2:13am helped but by the time the headache was gone, I was wide awake. I really hate that.

I was ready to sleep at 5:30am but the alarm, of course, went off at 6am. Coffee has not helped me stay awake. Work is really not helping at all. I’m to the point where I’m considering cleaning house as a stay awake method. Does anyone have any experience with that? Does it work?

It’s going to be a long, long day and a longer night. Gilmore Girls is one! Michelle is working til “close”! I must. Stay awake.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams is a bit like Hitchhiker’s Guide with a little Christopher Moore thrown in for good measure. As TW says, “So you recommend it, then?” Well duh. I’m a Hitchhiker fan and a huge Chris Moore fan. What’s not to like?

Quirky characters. Weird science. Unbelievable made totally believable. Tons of snark and sarcasm. Yea, I recommend it.

Daily Dose of Mysteries – Solved and Unsolved

In January, I posted about a mysterious bird that appeared in our yard. Today, that mystery was solved!

The 1/2 child was wandering the neighborhood today, trying to solve a little vandalism problem that’s been going on around here. Well not solve it, but at least find some evidence that would allow someone else to solve the problem. In his wanderings, he stopped to talk to a woman who lives up the street. She said she’d pass the word and see if she could find someone who might have some clues.

Later, she stopped at the house to see if he’d had any luck. We were sitting outside on the stoop. The 1/2 child went over to her car to talk to her. I eavesdropped. And then I heard her say something that directly effected me “I’m the one who is responsible for the parrot.”

I jumped up and said YOU!?! You did that?? She laughed and said that she and her husband loved our flamingos so much that they wanted to give us a gift. So she snuck up to the front yard, or tried to since her husband thought it would be funny to blast the horn a few times and get her caught (which didn’t work, oddly enough).

I thanked her and told her how I’d tried to figure out where the bird came from. I told her I’d blogged it. It was funny. What is funnier is she owns the restaurant that my son works at. She had no clue that he lived in the house where she left the parrot. Heh. Life is funny. Mystery solved.
