Post BlogHerCon Recap?

If that’s what you’re looking for, you aren’t going to find it here. Luckily there are women who made it home a lot earlier, and with a lot less stress, than I did. Go read their blogs, I’ll get to my own recaps eventually.

For now, I’m busy unpacking bag after bag after bag of clothes and cards and toys and books and schwag! Oh the schwag! Most of it I never saw til I unpacked it. I barely had time to look at the exhibit tables and I never even opened my schwag bag.

We’ve made a dent in the laundry and a dent in the schwag and I’ve made a huge dent in my very long “to-do at work” list. I’m looking forward to getting back to work and back to a schedule.

Sorry mom….

Now we are trapped in a hotel in Charlotte. It’s not a great hotel but as Prince J says, at least it isn’t called “The Inn of Charlotte”. Thank goodness we can all be quite amusing at midnight after some pretty rough moments.

There are many things frustrating about this leg of our trip, besides the fact that we are all pretty smelly at this point. And there’s no 24 hour Super Target near by where we can get clothing to cheer us up.

I could call my mom, wake her up, and beg her to come get us and make a quick trip to the store. But I won’t ’cause she might disinherit me or something. I will, however, call her at 7:30 and tell her we are here and to be prepared for us to call in a few hours … just in freaking case.

Boy are we ready to be home.

Trapped in Chicago

We should be home right now. We should be doing the things we normally do at 10:23 am – like working, doing laundry, cleaning house – you know, that real life stuff that I actually miss when I’m traveling.

Instead, we’re trapped in Chicago. In a hotel that is not nearly as nice as the City Centre was (more about that once I am home). I’m on the floor because there isn’t a plug near the table except the one Prince J is using to charge his gameboy. TW is sleeping on a pull out couch. Prince J is sleeping in a roll away bed. Michelle is in a room of her own, somewhere high above us, probably griping because you have to pay for internet and I didn’t give her my credit card info when we finally got her into a room just shy of midnight.

To all of the flight attendants in the world, I have some advice for you. Do not open the rear hatch during those last flight checks. The slide will deploy and an already overbooked flight of people will not be happy with you. Oh no, they won’t be happy at all.

BlogHer Con 07 – Day One

BOF was fun to work and I got to see a zillion people but I didn’t get to talk to many people for any real length of time. Except I gushed over Susie Freaking Bright like always and made Badger blush like always and said hello and got quick hugs a lot. But, working that table made it hard for me to get into a flow for the conference. Here it is 3:21 and I don’t feel like I’ve gotten it together for this conference yet.

I live blogged the first session (that’s on BlogHer) then I had a quick lunch with Prince J and joined the BOF GLBT group and chatted with them while Prince J and Michelle wandered around Navy Pier.

After that, we wandered through half of the exhibitors and landed in the Yahoo Cafe where I cleaned up my live blog (mostly) and charged my laptop a bit and just chilled for an hour. Now I’m with Michelle in Elise Bauer’s blog traffic panel. Elise is brilliant but I’m not focusing much and trying to catch up with work and feeds and email.

While reading my feeds, I stumbled upon Daring Young Mom suggesting folks might want to pay attention when they are in panels. Ya think? 😉

My BlogHer Shoes

Yes I was the woman who said she would never buy special shoes for BlogHer. I was the woman who teased TW for looking for the perfect BlogHer shoes for like a year. Yes I am the woman who has the BEST BlogHer shoes – Ever.

Since I’m trapped in an airport, with a delayed flight, and all of the CEs and speakers are about to start the party without me… you can have a sneak peek at my shoes. (You should click the photo. Seriously.)

Older than dirt

If you ask the little kids how old I am, they will immediately tell you I’m older than dirt. I’ve been telling them that since I first met them and they’ve embraced the idea completely. In fact they will happily talk about what being older than dirt means. But they don’t know the half of it.

Site redesigns are fun and interesting and challenging and rewarding but OMG they are exhausting. There was a time when I could stay up working (or playing) for 36 hours and not feel like I was falling apart. That time is long gone. And three hours of sleep after a 36 hour day is really not doing me a whole lot of good.

But. I’m pretty pleased with the way the new BlogHer looks and functions. There are resolutions in place for the majority of known problems and the other issues are sure to be resolved quickly because we have such an amazing team.

In the meantime, I’m tired. And BlogHerCon 07 is in umm 3 days?

I am so totally older than dirt.

The men were not inspiring (except for Cooper)

OK some thoughts from the debate tonight – you can see more of my scattered live blogging thoughts in the comments on BlogHer but I’m going to hit the low points here. Because boy did the guys have some low points.

What in the hell was that with the “bad touch” thing from Edwards. That was not the question dude. And then Obama followed right along where Edwards led him, that’s inexperience and nervousness but not a good sign in a presidential candidate.

And then Edwards staring at Hillary’s chest and pointing out her clothing. Can you say sexist behavior from the man his wife would like you to believe is the best candidate for women?

BlogHer at the CNN/youtube debate

I just got a message from Morra and she’s in a cab on the way to The Citadel. Darn Charlotte airport will get you when you least expect it.

Morra is hoping to live blog the event via Twitter since she’s in the main hall and doesn’t think she can liveblog from there. Watch it and blog it, and then go post the links in the Blogher discussion.

Update 6:19pm – she made it but she can’t blog from there so look for her to check in after the event. Now get those fingers ready to live blog it for her. She’ll have some interesting things to say when it’s all over and she will love seeing your live blogging thoughts.

Another update 6:44pm – looks like maybe she will be live blogging after all. I hope so.

7:30 – she’s blogging!

Nickie’s Nook: Sharing the Journey

I’ve blogged about Nickie before – several times, actually. I first discovered her blog when writing a post for BlogHer about Guide Dogs. I’ve been reading her work ever since and learning something new with just about every single post that she makes.

When she announced she had written a “blook“, I bought it: Nickie’s Nook: Sharing the Journey. Not the digital download, I bought the real thing and I was thrilled when it arrived. I spent my spare time today reading it and while some of it reads like a “blook” most of it reads like a “book” – a real live, honest to goodness book. Many of the essays and entries in it, I’ve read before on her blog. But many of them were new to me – either published on her blog before I was reading it or published when I was swamped and just skimmed. Or maybe they didn’t come from her blog at all, I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter – what does matter is that once again, Nickie taught me stuff – and she got me thinking about things I probably would never have thought about. Nickie is very, very good at that.
