Two Non-Fiction Craft Books

I picked up This Can Be Beautiful with the idea that it would be a good book for #Readathon later in the month. But, it needs to go back to the library before #readathon so I read it last weekend when I was tired, had a headache, and couldn’t figure out what I wanted to read next. It was OK. Not great. Not horrible. OK. There were a couple of cute ideas and it was a good book to flip through at the time. Also, I have no idea who Tiffany Pratt is. Do you Canadians watch her on HGTV in your country?

Since I was reading This Can Be Beautiful, I figured I might as well read Crafting with Feminism, which I picked up at Poetry & Prose when Steph and I went to dinner in DC last month. I couldn’t resist it. Totally cute. We should really make those vulva Christmas ornaments this year. And, I have an idea for a Christmas gift I might make for Michelle. But, the biggest thing that happened because I read this darn book is I fell into the hole that is Vaginal Fantasy videos. (the author of this book, Bonnie Burton, is one of the co-hosts.) Until now, I’d steadfastly avoided this video series. (Easy because Google Hangout is stupid…) Now, I find myself just randomly clicking one of their videos and listening (and laughing) while I work. Oy.

My Name is Lucy Barton

TW hated My Name is Lucy Barton. She said it was like reading one long run on sentence, which makes no sense. There’s a lot of punctuation in the book. I get it though. It was an odd little book and pretty depressing, too. Poverty and abuse and poverty and, well, it was an odd little book.

I didn’t hate it. But, I didn’t love it, either.

Oh. Hahaha. It was long listed for a Mann Booker. That explains everything. Really.

The Road to Paradise

First, I have no idea who this author is or why some people were so disappointed with Road to Paradise. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t that bad (except the end. The end was annoying.) Some of the things people seem to be complaining about were things I found interesting. The religious discussions. I liked those.

I also enjoyed thinking about what a road trip in 1980 would be like for a couple (ok, three) teen girls. It was a fun reminder of how much life has changed. How the hell did we manage road trips back then? We did, clearly, but good grief — life is better now, lol. Paper maps are annoying. No ATM machines. No cell phones. Gah. Life is definitely better now.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

I decided another Holly Black book was in order and went with vampires… The Coldest Girl in Coldtown and while I still prefer her faerie books, I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Interesting characters, Gavriel’s insanity was a nice change for a vampire “hero.” The bloggers and vloggers and video feeds creating a weird connection between Coldtowns and the rest of the world was an interesting concept, too. I could see that happening. Absolutely.

Crosstalk

Boy, ain’t that the truth… there’s absolutely too much “connection” going on. (I say that with some sarcasm, true as it may be.) Crosstalk was pretty good, though I admit to rolling my eyes a bit, in places. Let me just go on record as saying I don’t want my phone to help me communicate telepathically. I also do not want brain surgery that helps me “connect” more with my partner.

NO THANK YOU.
