Dewey’s Readathon

#Readathon – Paris Portriats (Third book of the day)

110 pages

What a coincidence that I plucked Paris Portraits off of the shelf at the library right about the time that Christopher Moore’s Sacre Bleu arrived and that I read it today, after reading Forbidden Fruit. One of those odd reading coincidences that makes reading richer.

Harriet Levy’s journal of memories from her time in Paris with the Steins and Toklas and various painters and poets. Fabulously interesting. I’d have probably wanted to kill both Stein women – then again, having the opportunity to purchase a Matisse (though I’d have probably sided with Gertrude and gone with the Picasso) would have been amazing… and probably have made it worth it to have to deal with them.

#Readathon Mid-Event Survey

1         How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired? —- I was tired at about 2pm CT and a fake-nap helped quite a bit. I think I’ll be ok til the midnight marks.

2          What have you finished reading?  — Still just Spell Bound and Forbidden Fruit but I’m getting close to finishing two more.

3         What is your favorite read so far? – I’ve really enjoyed all of the books I’ve read but have to admit I’m even more pleased by NieNie’s book than I thought I’d be.

4         What about your favorite snacks?  — My snacks have been a bit of a disappointment.  All things I like, or normally like – but I just haven’t loved them. So weird. The salsa and tortilla chips later tonight should help resolve that. Maybe.

5         Have you found any new blogs through readathon?  I’ve pretty much just visited the mini-challenge bloggers this year but I’ve been keeping track of cheerleader blogs and other participant blogs to visit over the next week.

#Readathon Update

It’s 3:33 – I took a short nap, or tried to – with the bird screaming, not much napping was done. I’ve cleaned some spam (at work) and answered some email (at work) and posted a couple of links (work again!) and now I’m ready to get back to the books.

2 books complete

Working on 2 more (at the same time)

I’ve eaten a cranberry scone, two handfuls of chocolate covered pomegranate seeds, two handfuls of olive oil popcorn, a plate of leftover spaghetti with three small pieces of Ciabatta bread.  I think it’s time for some braided mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and falafel chips. Maybe one of TW’s bottled cokes or a bottled Fanta to go with it?

#Readathon — Book 2, Done! Forbidden Fruit

Another 209 pages down, which is a little misleading. Forbidden Fruit: A History of Women and Books in Art is a very large coffee table type book. It’s beautiful and interesting and I would own it if I were a rich woman. I also need to remember to find a copy of The Tale of the Genji, which I still have never read.

#Readathon Mini-Challenge – Book Appetit

This is for the Book Appetit mini challenge…

I just finished Spell Bound, by Rachel Hawkins, and every time Cal heals Archer (which is a lot), Archer says he ows Cal a burger. We’d have to have the BEST burgers on the face of the planet — with awesome toppings for everyone to choose from. Everything from bleu cheese to bacon to guac to pickles and onions.

Oh, and green smoothies to go along with the Brannick’s favorite green healing/energy drink.

First #Readathon Book DONE! — Spell Bound

One book down, 327 pages. And TW called when I had two pages left to read. Talk about bad timing, heh.

Spell Bound was excellent. I wasn’t sure how everything was going to be fixed at the end of the last book. In fact, I didn’t think it could be  fixed. But, Hawkins did it beautifully. All wrapped up in a nice little bow. Even the ending was perfect. Exactly right. How often does that happen?  Almost never.

#Readathon Mini-Challenge – Books in Translation

Interesting challenge… not all books translate well to English but one of my favorites is The Shadow of the Wind.  I’m not sure which cover is the original and it would take more time than I want to spend to figure it out right now – but interesting question and I’ll go explore the covers again another time. Maybe this one?

My copy is not on the shelf where it belongs, which means a kid (RJ???) has stolen it. That’s not good. I need that back…

But one of my favorite lines is… the first line:

I still remember the day my father took me to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books for the first time
