Dewey’s Readathon

Readathon Intro Kick Off

Yippee! (I’m kind of still getting some work done but the spam can wait for me to introduce myself and eat the first yummy food of the day…)

1) I’m reading from Chicagoland — mostly the bedroom but also from the back porch and the office and maybe the front porch if the weather holds.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? — tough question. Probably Spellbound.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? — another tough question, they’re all going to be yummy. Probably the braided mozzarella.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! — what? no! no time for that! I have to get some work done before I can officially start. Click About Me up there instead, ‘k?

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? — I’ve tossed some zines into the reading mix this year, and I’m going to make extra sure not to do more work than absolutely necessary. No workplace distractions for me!

Happy #Readathon! Now excuse me while I wolf down a cranberry scone and grab my first book!

Readathon – Eve!

Tomorrow is one of my two favorite days of the year – Readathon Day! Yippee!

I dragged TW to Trader Joe’s this morning and picked up snacks for the big day (she picked up some to take with her to her Prom/mommy weekend readathon in Des Moines.)  I have cranberry scones for breakfast. I’ll have spaghetti sandwiches (on the Italian loaf I bought at TJ’s) with my leftover Creamy Crock Pot Spaghetti that’s cooking right now for lunch. I have vegetable bird nests for dinner. In between, I’ve got a black bean salsa, falafel chips, quinoa & black bean tortilla chips, braided mozzarella, chocolate covered pomegranates, and olive oil popcorn.

I’ve finally decided which books I’m going to focus on and here’s a photo (pretend you can see a couple of eBooks in there, too.)

I tossed some ‘zines I’ve been meaning to read onto the top, those will be nice when I need a bit of a break. And, I’m amused that NieNie’s book is on the stack – during last spring’s readathon, I read Ree’s book. Spring seems to be a good time for BlogHer blogger’s books, doesn’t it?

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star (#readathon)

Finally – finished another book for the #readathon – who knew it would take so darn long to finish 428 pages Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star? If I’d known, I probably would have NOT read it for the readathon for goodness sakes.

It was amusing – very amusing. Darcy & Elizabeth. Charles & Jane. Charlotte & Richard. Lots of fun and confusion – just like a re-write of Austen should be.

And now – 18 hours after I started the #readathon – I’m calling it a night.

Re-reading Mini-Challenge (#readathon)

I don’t re-read many books – there just aren’t enough hours in the darn day. But – there are a few that I do re-read, quite regularly. Or I re-read bits and pieces of them. They’re all loaded on the Kindle app for my iPhone and iPad so I flip them open when I’m without a book or just in the mood to re-read one of them.

The three I re-read are:

The Woman in White

Fluke

The Red Tent

Redemption (Finished a book – finally. #readathon)

I finally finished Redemption. Finally. Lord that was long – and really, it’s the only complaint I have about this book. It was just a wee bit too long the beginning should have been edited a bit. I think the lead was just a little to long. Otherwise – interesting story – demons, angels, wiccans, gargoyles. Who doesn’t love that?

I will be interested to see what happens after the flying carpet and the ring of Solomon.  See – how awesome is that?

#Readathon Mid-Event Survey

1.)    I’m still reading the same darn books I started with. Gah. Redemption and Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star. These are taking forever – and I really am reading and not playing around.

2.)    2. I’ve finished four children’s non-fiction books – and that’s it, darn it.

3.)    I’m looking forward to The Blue Tattoo. It looks like that’s probably all I’m going to get to dig into.

4.)    Well I would have liked to have been able to make arrangements to free up my whole day but my life doesn’t work like that. So I’ve freed up most of my day and will catch up on the stuff I didn’t do today – tomorrow.

5.)    The only surprise interruption I had was a run to Five Guys after picking my daughter up from work. But that was ok since I listened to a book on audio while in the car and I read a book on the iPhone while I was there waiting for my order. Fewer interruptions this readathon than ever before.

6.)    How little I’ve actually finished. What the heck. This book is LONG.

7.)    I think the readathon is fabulous as it is – and I really don’t have a single recommendation to make to improve it.

8.)    I’d choose different darn books, that’s for sure.

9.)    I was tired mid-day and then I was tired right after that Five Guys burger. I’m good now, though. Ask me again at 10pm!

10.)  I always get up and walk around, and visit Twitter/blogs every hour. A five/ten minute break every hour seems to work well for me.

Four Children’s Non-Fiction (During the #readathon)

I took a break from the other two books I’ve been reading and picked up four of the books from the Cybils Shortlist for children’s nonfiction. I enjoyed them all.

The Secret of the Yellow Death – I expected to find this one dull but I didn’t. It was interesting and exactly the right length with the right amount of photos. I highly recommend it.

The Extraordinary Mark Twain (According to Susy) – I expected to like this one the best, but I didn’t. It was fine but a little too dry though I did like the way Suzy’s journal was tucked into the book as its own separate journal. That was smartly done. The illustrations were nice as well. It was fine – just not my favorite.

Henry Aaron’s Dream – Why are there always baseball books in the Cybils shortlist? Could we have some football or basketball or soccer every now and then? I like the baseball books but there are other sports stories to be told to kids, ya know? Warning: If you are thinking of reading this to your children or letting them read it, the N WORD is written out (twice, I believe) so be prepared.

Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum — Heh. Enough said, right?
