Dewey’s Readathon

Reverse Readathon: That’s a Wrap!

I’ve decided I like this reverse readathon thing. It’s officially over but it’s 8pm and what else are we going to do but read for another few hours? So, we get an extra four hours added to our readathon this way. I LIKE IT.

Here’s the final survey:

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?

I took a 20 minute nap at 4:30 p.m.

2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!

I finished Master Magician (I was 100 pages into it when the readathon started.)
I read Stray City in its entirety.
I finished a short story in Dear Sweet Filthy World (after trying to finish one for weeks.)
I’m 132 pages into Lady Jayne Disappears.

3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?

I’d recommend the all (though you should start with the first book in the Paper Magician trilogy.)

4. How did you feel about this first-ever Reverse Readathon? Should we do it again?

See above – loved it! Let’s definitely do it again.

5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep in October?

I definitely want to do more readathons, they’re my favorite.

Reverse Readathon: Mid-Event Survey

We turned off the light at midnight and were up at 8 a.m. and ready to go again. Well mostly ready to go again. The coffee has been made, the cinnamon rolls (oh, orange rolls actually) are in the oven. The dogs are using the bathroom and TW has the vacuum cleaner out cleaning up silica gel balls (don’t ask.) I read two paragraphs of a book of short stories, Dear Sweet Filthy World, while the coffee was brewing but that’s about it — so far. I’ll be back to it for reals as soon as the orange rolls are out of the oven.

On to the survey:

1. What are you reading right now?

I’m reading Stray City and the aforementioned Dear Sweet Filthy World.

2. How many books have you read so far?

I’ve just finished the one and am well into #2.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Stray City, the one I’m reading now.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

No real interruptions last night except going to sleep to get my 8 hours of sleep. 😉

5. What surprises you most about the Reverse Readathon so far?

I was a little worried about starting so late, taking that long sleep time, and then getting back to it but it seems like it might be ok… aside from the issue with the silica gel beads… I think we might do it this way again, the next time we do a fake readathon.

Reverse Readathon!

Right about the time TW started bugging me about having a “fake” readathon, I saw the post saying there would be a Reverse Readathon in July. And, it’s actually on a weekend that works for us to participate! (Shocking, considering how busy our weekends have been and will be, for awhile.)

We didn’t prepare well with the reserving and checking out of special books and our snacks are heavy on processed food and sugar but we’re doing this and we’re darn excited about it. (And maybe I can actually finish a book?)

#Readathon Books Five, Six & Seven: All Non-Fiction

First, the cookbook My Two Souths that Sassymonkey told me about. I liked it. TW was not as impressed with it, which is troubling since we thought she’d really like it. I really want the tomato pie/tart. That would be yummy right about now.

Next, Gardens of South Florida was fine. An over-sized book full of fancy gardens. If you like fancy tropical gardens, this is your book.

Last, but not least, The Art Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained. To be honest, I’ve been reading this book for awhile. I just leave it open on the breakfast bar and read a couple of pages while I eat dinner or lunch or whatever. And then I finished off my readathon by reading the rest straight through. It’s a great book and I’m interested in the other books in the series. I’ll probably get some of those in the future. I might even like to own a few.

And that’s a wrap… seven books, mostly non-fiction, 17 hours of reading and a $50 donation to the #readathon charity. No great snacks and I have a messy kitchen and I didn’t take part in a single mini-challenge (except the opening survey), which was weird. I just wasn’t feeling it. BUT, I very much enjoyed my #readathon and am looking forward to the fall event. (I hope it’s not GHC/birthday weekend… gah.)

#Readathon Book Four: The Abyss Surrounds Us

Liz Henry talked about The Abyss Surrounds us a few weeks ago on Facebook and I decided we needed to read it. It was excellent! Totally awesome for #readathon. Trained killer sea creatures, a female pirate captain, a couple of lesbians. Really excellent. And, even better — it ended perfectly. I like that.

It’s getting late, I’m getting tired and since I don’t have a bunch of picture books and early readers this time around, it’s time to move to the world of cookbooks and over-sized coffee table books to carry me through the next couple of hours.

#Readathon Book Three: Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurston Story

I bought Fire!! when I was in DC in February and saved it specially for #readathon. It was very good but it felt … rushed, maybe? I mean it’s hard to tell someone’s life story in the span of one relatively short graphic novel, I get that. But Hurston’s story is so… interesting. I almost felt let down. Almost. It’s still a great graphic novel and I highly recommend it. I just wanted MORE.

#Readathon Book Two: I Hate Everyone, Except You

I had to read I Hate Everyone, Except You because how could I not, with a title like that. Also, Clinton Kelly (WNTW), right?

And, it totally amused me. The first chapter horrified me and amused me, both at the same time. Many of the chapters horrified and amused me. It was awesome. lol

Also, do you think you can you outrun a raccoon?

Good morning and happy #readathon

Hah. I can tell I haven’t done this in awhile, I usually pre-write my answers (or most of them) to the opening survey. LOL. Not this year. I had almost forgotten that there was an opening survey. Gah. I hope to never miss two #readathons in a row, again. Ever.

Onward…

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
— I’m quite happy to be reading from Keystone Heights, FL and NOT from Chicagoland. Finally.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
— Hard to say. Doodle Revolution? Or Book Jumper? Oh wait. FIRE! (a graphic novel about the life of Zora Neale Hurston.)

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
— Well. I’m not sure. We deviated from the norm this year and just bought our snacks at Publix. So, there’s nothing really exotic or unusual happening. That’s going to be something I regret. I guarantee it. Maybe the cream horns. I LOVE CREAM HORNS.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
— I am starting off tired. No idea why, since I slept well. You care about this, right?

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
— I did not participate in the last readathon but I’ve participated in a lot of them … today…I’m going to be reading outside a bit, particularly in the morning while it’s cool. That will be a big change for me. We’ll see how that goes.

Onward to the books (and the coffee!)

#readathon…. 16 hours and out…

Alrighty, I’m calling it a night.

I finished 2 non-fiction and 1 fiction/short story (the most recent was Herotica 2 and it was fine, not the best but not bad, either) and 7 children’s fiction. I’m 2/3 of the way through an ebook and my eyes are too tired to finish tonight.

Total page count… 1,621. Not bad, all things considered. And, it was a very nice day. I’m looking forward to spring, now.

15 hours in, 7 more books (#readathon)

I finished seven children’s books (from the Cybils shortlist) while listening to the Cubs lose. (wah!) 777 pages…

The best of the bunch was Knock, Knock: MY Dad’s Dream for Me — heartbreaker.

I liked Here Comes the Easter Cat a lot more than I expected to. Totally fun. JMP needs this book.

Lulu and the Rabbit Next Door was super cut.

Like Carrot Juice on a Cupcake was pretty cute. I enjoyed it.

I’m a big Violet Mackerel fan so Violet Mackerel’s Possible Friend was terrific. I love Violet and her family.

I was most disappointed by The Lion Who Stole My Arm. It was fine but I expected more.

I did not particularly love Lulu’s Mysterious Mission. It was fine. Just not great.
