The Inexplicables

I’m kind of annoyed that I didn’t figure out “what” the Inexplicables were earlier than I did. I mean I knew before the Princess explained it to the boys, but I should have figured it out right away. I was over-thinking it and stuck in the whole zombies thing.

I was kind of bummed by the book in general though, I didn’t really like Rector very much — and I generally like the “bad” kid in books. Or at least feel some empathy for the “bad” kid. I don’t know why he grated on me so much or why I never really came around to liking him even a little bit.

Weird. Very weird.

I’m still looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Etiquette & Espionage

I’ve been waiting for the new YA series from Gail Carriger since, forever. OK not forever but it felt that way. Now that I’ve read Etiquette & Espionage I’m back to counting the days (months!) until the next book is out. Grrr. I hate waiting for books.

Sophronia is more Flavia de Luce than Alexia Tarabotti — probably, in part, due to the age of Sophronia and her friends as well as the lack of supernaturals. Oh there are supernaturals, just not so many or so frequent as in the P.P. series. I wonder if we’ll get more supernaturals in future books — and more characters to help us connect the dots to the P.P. series. (the dots we were able to connect in this book were excellent. Well done, Carriger, well done.

Timeless

Thank goodness – you know how a series can get kind of boring after awhile, particularly if you read a bunch of books in the series really close together? Well Timeless, the fifth book in the Parasol Protectorate series, was excellent. As TW said, just as good as the first book and certainly better than the second and third and fourth. I was glad to see that some of the things I thought should happen in order to tie everything into a neat and pretty package DID happen. But now I’m dying to know what happens next and there is no next.  I mean I know what happens because the last book tied it all up for us but I want to READ it not just picture it. And, to not know how Ivy manages. Or see Madame LeFeoux neat and tidy. And. And. And.

Darn.

I guess I can wait for Prudence to grow up a bit more, 2013 will come around soon enough. I guess.

Heartless

Gah! I was screaming “No, don’t invite them to Woolsey!” but Alexia did not listen. Sheesh, what was she thinking? Those poor wolves! And, I’m glad I was right about how the threat to the queen really happened, well sort of glad since it was sad it’s hard to be really glad, ya know? You probably don’t know if you haven’t read this series, or haven’t read Heartless – which you should go ahead and do.

Now … to wait for the next book and learn more about the baby… hmm, the next book might be both steampunk and adoption…

Blameless

I have decided… I want a clockwork ladybug and a steampunk parasol. ASAP.

I enjoyed Blameless, though maybe not quite so much as I enjoyed Soulless and Changeless. There was something just a wee bit off – and it wasn’t the lack of nose negativity (of which there was almost none – YAY!)

The biggest question I’m left with is… would I have let Biffy die? Or not?  Tough, tough call.

Ganymeade

I couldn’t have asked for a better book, (or author), to kick off my Steampunk Challenge – Ganymeade is fabulous. I might be a little bit biased since I actually spent a good bit of my summer vacation hanging out at the Friends of the Hunley museum way back before it moved to North Charleston. (Err, actually it was way back before the Hunley was found, now that I think about it.)

A submarine is a great steampunk machine – brilliant idea and brilliant idea to have the crew of the Naamah Darling fly it/drive it/sail it.

As much as I’m looking forward to seeing Boneshaker made into a movie, I feel like Ganymeade might be even better. The Hunt for Red October meets Night of the Living Dead – steampunked? Brilliant, right? I’m also looking forward to see what happens next in Seattle.
