Day to Day

Daily Dose of Kids and Construction

The house next door is getting an addition.  I thought at first it was going to be a swimming pool.  Then I thought it was going to be a fence (they are one of the few houses without a fence).  But then construction got going and no, it’s an addition.  Which doesn’t make sense to us because the people are old, there don’t seem to be many people who live in the house, and the house is already very large.  (And no, we’ve never met them even though we have lived here for 5 years.  Oh except Chris who met the old dude when he fell on the sidewalk and could not get up.  Chris helped him up and since then the dude rides a motorized scooter around.)

So that construction.  It is bugging the big kids.

Michelle ranted last week that there should be laws preventing construction noises at 7am when she is trying to get another half hour of sleep before school.  She ranted and ranted.  I reassured her that it wouldn’t take long because they got a TON done and it looked like it just needed a roof and some finishing on the outside and then surely the inside construction would not wake her.

This week, they are in fact working on the roof.  And now Chris is disgusted.  Not with the noise of the hammers and stuff but with the ridiculous chatter of the construction workers.  His room is right next to the construction site and apparently these men talk about the DUMBEST stuff.  And he simply cannot take listening to their idiocy any longer.  So he left to hang out with people who don’t talk about dumb stuff.

I’m finding the whole construction thing sort of amusing simply because of the angst it is causing the big kids.  Too loud when she’s trying to sleep – ha.  Dumb conversations – ha.  Payback in the form of construction workers.  Who knew?

Daily Dose of Stuff

Here are some recent topics of discussion around our house, in no particular order:

1) I saw the Virgin Mary in our neighbor’s window.  TW saw it too so I’m not crazy.
2) Jane Wyatt is dead but Joni Mitchell is not.
3) Glen Close is too old to play Marie Antoinette.
4) Did we get hit by the same truck (aka sassymonkey) or were there two different trucks?
5) Upgrading IE.
6) Ponytails.
7) The weather – it’s cold today, after being surprisingly warm, and getting colder.  We are going to freeze tomorrow.
8)  There is such a thing as too many tomatoes.
9) Who owns that blue car and why does he pull in there all of the time and then pull out again?
10) It’s hard to tell the difference between TV and video games, just by the sound.

Daily Dose of Denise

Today is my birthday.

It’s started just like any other day and I like that.  Seriously.  I really don’t like a fuss, even the Ferrick-fest I didn’t like.  Sort of.  Too much fuss.

The only thing that will be different today (I hope) is that Jenn is coming! Yea!

Michelle and Chris both work today.  I have already worked this morning.  I have laundry and housework to do.  I might do some yardwork or might not.  I have some blogging to catch up on and a ton of books to read.

I think I’ll be extravagant and hit the Starbucks when I take Michelle to work.

The perfect birthday – no fuss, no mess, no cake (or cupcakes), no big gifts (except the big check from my mom, which was really nice actually).  Perfect.

Hmmm, hashbrown casserole would not be considered fussy.

Happy birthday to ME!

Daily Dose of Sleep

It’s bed time. I don’t care if it is only 10:17am, it is still bedtime! That’s what happens when you wake up at 2:13am with a headache. A headache that is either a brain tumor or a sinus headache, those are the same thing, right? Tylenol at 2:13am helped but by the time the headache was gone, I was wide awake. I really hate that.

I was ready to sleep at 5:30am but the alarm, of course, went off at 6am. Coffee has not helped me stay awake. Work is really not helping at all. I’m to the point where I’m considering cleaning house as a stay awake method. Does anyone have any experience with that? Does it work?

It’s going to be a long, long day and a longer night. Gilmore Girls is one! Michelle is working til “close”! I must. Stay awake.

Daily Dose of Schedules

I like schedules.  I like routine.  When my schedule gets screwed up and my routine gets thrown out of whack, I am not a happy person.  If it happens a lot, or for an extended period of time, I’m incredibly grouchy about it.  And I exhibit my grouchyness by being very, very quiet.

If I’m quiet, I’m either sick or mad or grouchy.

I’ve had two weeks of screwed up routine and screwed up schedule.  What’s worse is I had only just gotten comfortable with the new schedule and the new routine.   As you can probably guess or as you may have noticed by my blog – I’ve been a little quiet lately.

Well that’s all over and done with.  I’m tired of being sick or mad or grouchy or out of sorts. I’m tired of screwed up schedules.  I’m also tired of being quiet.

So, no more of that crud.  Back to business as usual around here.  I decree it and so it must be.

Daily Dose of September

September arrived early this year.  Before I have people calling me or emailing me or private messaging me, I’m going to beat the rush and post just a wee list of special events that have happened here in the last 10 days.  Are you ready…

1) We’ve had 4 family birthdays.
2) I’ve driven TW to the airport and back.
3) The half child and his friend have replaced the serpentine belt on the car twice.  The first time, wrong belt.
4) I’ve had 3 dead batteries.  OK just one battery was dead but it happened 3 times.
5) 1 new battery was purchased.
6) In a 5 day period, I was in the car ALONE for 15 hours.
7) In that same 5 day period, I was in the car with other people for 10 hours.
8) Jenn was sad because her luggage was lost and I being the non-compassionate mother that I am – laughed.  Which made her mad.  And it was her birthday.
9) Our wireless router died.
10) I’ve had 9 phone meetings.
11) I have spoken to the dirtbag on the phone, for no good reason that I can come up with except that – he’s clueless.
12) Jenn, probably has kidney stones and is a little scared and a little over-dramatic because she’s an August woman AND because I had horrid kidney stones and she remembers how sick I was and how horrid I looked in the hospital dealing with them.
13) TW is heading into surgery in just a few hours.
14) I will be sitting in a waiting room with people and no internet connection.
15) My ankle, it’s still screwed up.

So, there you go.  September arrived early.  I’m just peachy.  So don’t ask.  Don’t call.  Don’t send mail. Don’t private message me.  I know you mean well but just don’t.  It doesn’t help.  And I’m not a nice person who can pretend that it does.  I’ve got 3 weeks and then this too shall pass.  So there.  Happy September, one and all.

Daily Dose of Life

Ack! I’m tired! Ack! I’m busy!  Ack! My ankle hurts.

I’m tired of being tired.  I’m tired of waking up an hour before the alarm goes off.  I’m tired of knowing if I didn’t get up an hour before the alarm goes off, I’d never get everything done that needs to be done.  I’m tired of getting up an hour before the alarm goes off and still never getting everything done that needs to be done.

Work is busy.  And not the normal busy.  It’s all of the unusual things that have to be done that are kicking my rear.  I prefer the humdrum normal everyday busyness, not this special busyness.

I’m tired of hobbling around on an ankle that still hurts, even though it is definitely "better" it is not well.  And the hobbling to baby the ankle causes the bad knee to yell at me for treating it unkindly.  I can’t win with the left leg and that is annoying.

And Michelle, she goes to college today.  And she is nervous.  More than nervous.  Which makes me very very nervous.  (Updates regarding Michelle will appear at Fast Times if you’re interested.)

There you go, today’s update.  I’m tired.  I’m busy. My ankle hurts.  My kid, she’s nervous.

Life.

Daily Dose of Traffic

There are about two weeks out of the year when driving on the UF campus is not a nightmare – this is one of those weeks.  I can’t even enjoy it though because I’m still thinking about the summer madness and dreading the fall madness.

In the summer, traffic headaches are numerous – all of those preview mommies (yes there are some daddies and of course there are students, but the mommies are the worst) those huge gangs of preview people who block traffic by crossing by the hundreds right in front of the bookstore.  Why can’t they direct them to cross at the light instead?  Those mommies who choose to wear the WRONG shoes for a full day of preview walking, they are stumbling and slow at 8am having only walked a mile from the parking garage to the Union.  And then there are the mommies who carry these huge bags, bigger than anything their kids will ever need to carry as students on this campus, and feel some need to dig their cell phones or their lipsticks out of their bags in the middle of the crosswalk – holding up traffic because they cannot walk in those shoes and dig stuff out of their bags at the same time.

In summer, you’ve also got the camp kids – 4H, dance camp, volleyball camp, golf camp – you name it, there’s a camp.  Gangs of kids with surly looking adults crossing everywhere and anywhere, often against the light (if they even bother to cross in the crosswalks).  Summer, I hate summer on campus.

In the fall, the back to school unloading of stuff.  Oh the stuff college kids bring.  Oh the parents who park alongside the road, in the bike lanes.  I’m so not looking forward to that mess.

And once everyone is all moved in, then there’s the bike lane issue.  Don’t flame me for this, or go ahead and flame me… what makes 18 year old girls who haven’t ridden a bike regularly since they were 12 decide they must ride a bike on campus?  It’s dangerous.  I mean really dangerous.  They are all wobbley, they can’t make it up the big hill, and going down that hill, that is just a nightmare waiting to happen.  They can’t cross the street properly on those bikes and they aren’t good at paying attention to right turning cars and pedal at the same time.  Nightmare.

Let’s not forget football mayhem, leading into basketball mayhem.  Oh the traffic, the traffic, the traffic.  Go gators, bah!

Daily Dose of Cars

I got in the car today at 3pm and the temperature was 105.  Now that might not be hot enough to bake some cookies but it was hotter than I wanted it to be, considering I didn’t have time to let the AC cool things down – I was already running late and I really hate running late.

Maybe one of those Auto Cool Solar Car Fan thingies would be a good idea?  Has anyone ever tried one?  It is a "TV product" and surely someone out there is as addicted to those as TW is…  If you’ve tried this, I want to hear about it.  TW’s birthday is coming soon!

Daily Dose of Flamingos

Hey! Check out this wall hanging – a flamingo tapestry! Heh.  I don’t think I’ve ever owned any Tapestry Wall Hangings.  I’m trying to figure out where I might display that flamingo but coming up empty.  I think, instead, I’m going to order one for my sister as a housewarming present.  I’m pretty sure she has a spare wall or three to hang a tapestry.  In fact I’m pretty sure her house was built for these wall hangings.
