Daily Dose of Coffee – Roasting

Coffee_002
TW and E roasted coffee beans this morning in the "old fashioned popcorn popper" that E and Michelle got for Christmas a couple of years ago.  This coffee bean roasting fun was my Valentine’s Day present!  Weird and fun, typical of TW in its awesomeness.

Coffee_004
E was not really sure this was a good idea.  What if it hurt her popcorn popper?  The beans are prettier green than brown!  Are you sure this is how you are suppose to do this?  hehehe.  I don’t blame her for asking, the whole thing made me a little nervous too.  But, oddly enough, it seems to work.

Coffee_005
We’re going to have peaberry (a favorite of mine) and the beans smell pretty terrific.  I’ll let you know how it tastes in a couple of days.  Apparently after roasting, the beans have to sit.  HMPH!  Oh we’ve got some other kind, besides peaberry and those are prettier – or maybe they just roasted them longer so they are darker?

**Update** We’ve had three pots of the TW and Kids Popcorn Popper Roasted Coffee (TWKPPRC is how we’ll refer to it from now on, folks) and it’s awesome!  The lighter roasted beans (the first batch) had a really smooth taste.  The really really dark roasted beans was soooo strong, I loved it too!  The medium roasted beans were not my favorite of the three but the 1/2 child raved about it on the way to work this morning.  You can really TASTE the flavor or some such thing was said over and over again.  The word FRESH was also used.  I finally told him to shush up and let me drive in peace and save is rave reviews for TW after work.  So there you have it –  another marshmallowy TW present idea carried out to perfection.  I’m a lucky woman!

Daily Dose of Starbucks – #52 #60

Every morning TW and I stop at Starbucks.  We generally stop at the Starbucks where everyone knows our name and the baristas know our drink.  Sometimes we have to go to the Starbucks downtown but that’s just once a week or so, we don’t like that as much.  Lately though, there’s been a problem with our morning Starbucks run and it doesn’t matter which Starbucks we visit.  Two problems, actually.

The Way I See It #52 and The Way I See It #60

I was really excited to lose the holiday cups and get back to the traditional white cups with inspirational discussion worthy "The Way I See It" quotes.  That excitement has turned to frustration and dare I say, loathing?

I am sick to death of both #52 and #60.  Teddy Roosevelt is not the most inspirational of our presidents, in my opinion – I’m sure some of you adore Teddy and that’s fine – you can have all of the cup #60s if you want them.  Eavesdropping on baristas is something I do everyday and believe me I could write better cups from my eavesdropping than the little tidbit on cup #52.  The big problem though is 30 straight days of those two cups.

It appears as though all Venti cups in this town (is it the southeast? the country? the world) have those two "The Way I See Its".  (We’re going to Atlanta this weekend and I am hoping to prove it’s not the entire southeast!) (We went to Atlanta last weekend and unfortunately the #52 and #60 problem occurs there as well!)  The other size cups have different "The Way I See Its" and I’m tempted to change cup sizes just for something NEW to read and look at and talk about.  Won’t that make Starbucks sad?  If I stop spending $11 a day and spend $8 instead?  And after I get sick of those Grande cups, because I’m afraid I’ll get trapped with two new numbers, then I’ll have to switch sizes again, to a Tall,  and spend $5 a day.  And after that, I’ll have to stop going to Starbucks altogether.

Something had better be done about this cup issue, and quickly.  At this point I’d be thrilled with the Christian message "The Way I See It" cups that we read about last year.  At this point I’d be thrilled with quotes from the current President Bush.

**Updated after the trip to Atlanta**

I’m just that sick of cups #52 and #60.

Daily Dose of Weather – Hurricanes

Click Michelle is talking about the hurricane so I figured I’d take a minute and talk about it from the perspective of the folks in the “flamingo house”. I’m sure you’ll find it educational entertaining.

Last year we had three dog-gone hurricanes up here in Hoggetowne. We’re an hour’s drive from the Gulf and more than that from the Atlantic. We are inland for goodness sakes, we are not suppose to really have to deal with hurricanes. At least that was what I thought being a native of Hugo-land. Ha. Apparently we do have hurricanes because I was without power for several hours during all three. I was also without phone, cell phone and worse yet, INTERNET for many hours during all three. We had no significant damage to the house, which is shocking since we have three dead trees in the yard that the landlord has refused to do anything about. Whatever. It’s his house and if one of those trees takes out something important, like the roof, then I guess he’ll deal with it, won’t he?

Anyway, what troubles us around here the most is the fact that STARBUCKS CLOSES long before the hurricane arrives and they aren’t good about opening during a hurricane. Having no coffee is actually worse than having no internet.

The other problem is, we read. A lot. Not as much as we use the internet but it’s a close second. (or it is when I’m actually able to read, which I’m not, for some reason) It’s really hard to read at 6pm when you’re in the middle of a hurricane, don’t even think about trying when it’s 10pm. Even with the little flashlights we had last year, it was not fun. It was challenging though. Trying to figure out how to hold a cheap 3 for a $1 flashlight under your chin in just the right way as to keep the batteries connected to that metal thingy inside that actually makes the flashlight work, oh yea a huge challenge.

If you’ve been reading my blog regularly, and obviously everyone is, then you know TW tends to give me really wonderful birthday gifts, well last year’s gift is a prime example of that. I got. A. Hurricane Kit. For My Birthday. Yes, a hurricane kit.

Hurricanekit
Not just any hurricane kit, a DENISE hurricane kit. Since then, we’ve added the truly fabulous (not fabulous tasting, mind you) Wolfgang Puck coffee to the kit. (I keep drinking it without a hurricane in sight though because I’m lazy and sometimes need coffee IMMEDIATELY and TW is not home to make it for me anymore.)

So now I have a special radio so we can listen to KTK and their hurricane coverage. I have a lantern. I have more flashlights in a variety of sizes. I have a small stove and I have a battery operated coffee pot for when the six cans of Wolfgang Puck are gone.

No, there is no water except for that bottle of Ethos Water I told you all I was going to buy months ago. It’s been in the car ever since I purchased it and I’m sure will taste just fine after being boiled in the car all this time. I have no idea if we have food that can be eaten cold and uncooked or easily cooked on the little hurricane stove. Probably we have something. Or the kids won’t eat. Whatever. We have coffee and light with which to read by. That is all we really need here.

For those of you who might need a different kind of hurricane kit or some other sort of hurricane preparedness info, WebMD has that info. Someone should write to Dr Marks though and tell him about Wolfgang Puck. I’m sure he’ll agree that this is important.

Daily Dose of Coffee – Money

These are two of our regular baristas and we like them. It took awhile for the boy to grow on us but he has, now that he’s not too shy to talk to us. I think we have almost talked him into blogging so stay tuned for that… 😉

But the point of this post isn’t to talk about our favorite baristas (or least favorite) I’ve got two other things to ramble about and both involve money. But hey, anytime you talk about Starbucks money is in the back of your mind isn’t it?

As you may know, TW and I stop at Starbucks every morning for Quad Venti Caramel Macchiatos and unfortunately they’re skim too but I try to forget that as often as possible. (For you non-Starbucks people, quad means 4 shots of espresso. Venti is the largest size, it’s 24oz and I’m not going to explain Starbucks’ version of the macchiato because if you don’t know then you’re living on Mars and there are no Starbucks on Mars at this time and I don’t really like to torture anyone except his highness, J.)

I love my morning visit to Starbucks. I love my baristas. I love the fact that they know exactly what I want before I order and I love making new baristas nervous by reminding them that when you make a CM you do not pour the shot straight into the freaking cup. It’s fun. I enjoy seeing the others who are as addicted as I am. I love seeing the unusual people who wander in and puzzle over the menu. The troubling part of this school year, which starts on Monday, is trying to figure out how we’re going to be able to go to Starbucks without having to buy little kids coffee or hot chocolate every morning and drag them in with us and stuff.

Part of me was thinking we’d just skip Starbucks on the mornings that we had the kids. It would be a good way to save some money, right? But then the Hello Dollar! dude had to go and make me growly by reminding me how much money we spend there every year. I’m feeling like some teen kid whose mom has just explained why something is not a good idea, I just want to do it even MORE now.

Who cares if I take that $55 a week and put it in the bank and it turns into $3,019.26 (with interest)? I NEED MY STARBUCKS before work more than I need $3,019.26 a year right? Who cares if I’ve been seriously stressing over our debt for a year, if we don’t spend that on Starbucks we won’t save it, we’ll spend it on something else, won’t we?

Yes, we have a nice Starbucks coffee pot. I brew Gazebo in it everyday. We’ve got a nice Starbucks espresso machine too but we never use it. It takes too much work and it is not nearly as much fun as teasing college kids wearing their crummy Starbucks hats and cute little aprons. There’s no community standing around the espresso machine in my kitchen, ya know?

Life is hard.

And now that I’ve actually said life is hard and all I’m doing is thinking about how I might not get my Quad Venti Caramel Macchiato a few days a month I’m feeling like a hypocrite because there are kids in this world who don’t have clean water.

Starbucks is working on that problem by donating 10 million over five years from the sale of ethos water sold in their stores. (I’m buying a bottle tomorrow, I swear!!!)

Jay Winston over on the Huff Po blog doesn’t think this is good enough. (Has he pledged to donate $10 million of his earnings in over 5 years to the clean water cause??? Has he pledged any?) He seems to think that Starbucks would do better to encourage its customers to buy coupons for a dollar or five dollars to donate to the cause. He seems to think this would raise more than five million. I think he’s wrong. This may not be the BEST campaign but it’s better than some dumb “buy a ticket” campaign

I hate it when people ask me if I want to contribute a dollar to this cause or that at the grocery store or at Shoney’s or like they did today at Petsmart. I just don’t contribute to causes that way. And I don’t think the majority of Starbucks customers in this college town do either. Tomorrow when I head into my Starbucks I’m going to ask the baristas what they think but I bet they’d hate having to push tickets on people. Heck, they hate having to ask people if they’d like a pastry with their drink.

ongoing – The Wrath of Heaven

ongoing – The Wrath of Heaven

May it fall with sulphurous fury on those who dispatch an administrative minion to a busy neighborhood coffee shop crowded with regulars dropping by for their efficiently-produced latte, 8:30-ish in the morning, and instruct said minion to fetch back eleven assorted coffee drinks, each one subtly-underspecified and requiring extended barista dialogue, and finally to pay with with a credit card.

— Worse yet the idiot who orders 50 coffee drinks from Starbucks, by phone, to be taken to work (which is 30 miles from said Starbucks) and tips badly (if at all).
