Bleeding Out

TW picked up Bleeding Out during a quick trip we made to Wild Iris, in search of a couple of laptop stickers for Michelle and Prince J for Christmas. We didn’t really find the stickers we wanted but we did find books. As usual. Heh.

TW picked up Bleeding Out and never put it down. That doesn’t always mean it’s a great book but she has probably said “that was really good” a dozen times since she finished it. And after a really slow start, I would have to agree. It was a really good lesbian cop novel.

I’m not sure I like having a character named “Lawless” and Frank felt a little too Kate Delafield for me at times – but overall, I was happy with it and I liked the characters. Let’s see if we can find the next one in the series and let’s see if it is just as good.

The Winter Knights

Shiver. It’s pretty cold here in Florida right about now but not nearly as cold as it was in Sanctaphrax in The Edge Chronicles 8: The Winter Knights. Good thing that old Hall Master passed on his knowledge in time for the young knights to warm things up.

I liked this one better than some of the others ahead of it. I wonder what #9 will bring. Hopefully Quint and Maris are still young and primary characters.

Upstate

When I was creating my A to Z list, back in January, and looking for a book for the letter “U”, I found Upstate. I’m not sure how I found it, but I did – it might have been on someone else’s A to Z list, it might have been in the NY Times Book pages or blog. No idea how but it is one of the five best books, so far, on my A to Z list.

Get it on audio… it’s worth it for this one.

Agnes & the Hitman

Agnes & the Hitman was hysterical. No, wait. It was HYSTERICAL! I loved it and not just because of the flamingos. Best Jennifer Crusie book so far. I want to be cranky Agnes when I grow up, without the hitman – though he definitely had his charm.

And an OMG I had no idea moment… Jennifer Crusie wrote Coffee at Luke’s. I need that book. Who has not bought my Christmas gift yet? Whoever it is, you can send this – NOW.

Sweet Swan of Avon

Another book I should have read ages ago. It’s been living on my bookshelf since BlogHerCon06, thanks Blogher and Robin! Sorry it took me so long to read but Sweet Swan of Avon was worth waiting for.

I enjoyed it.

But I would since I totally don’t think Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare. I’m not sure Mary Sidney wrote Shakespeare either but it’s a heck of a lot more possible than Shakespeare writing Shakespeare.

Endymion Spring

Look! Another YA book! And, another book I own but have never read! And, another book I meant to read a year ago! I’m so glad I put Endymion Spring on my A to Z list. And extra glad that I’m making a final last ditch attempt to finish the A to Z list. Otherwise, I might never have found time for Endymion Spring and it would have sat quietly unobserved on RJ’s book shelf where it’s been for a year. Heh.

It was good. I wee bit of a slow start but right about the time (chapter 3) that I mentioned it was starting slow, it picked up and didn’t quit til the end.

Awesome. And I’m so glad I knew who the “shadow” was. I like it when I’m right – which is always, ya know.

Chicks with Sticks

Bah, just lost my post which was no doubt much better than the one I’m about to recreate now. Hmph…

Anyway, I was telling you that I stumbled across a YA book on audio called Chicks With Sticks: Knit Two Together when Prince J and I went to the library a couple of weekends ago. I grabbed it to make TW smile, which it did. It also has made us both smile for the last two weeks when we listened to it in the car.

It’s a fun book and I’m betting a fun series. YA, chick lit, yarny goodness (do I sound all knitty?) with a lot of blogging and social networking high schooly stuff thrown in for good measure.

I need to figure out what “Yarn Over” means though.

Rejuvenile

So, I’m a Rejuvenile, sort of. Not as hardcore as some people, (like TW – I don’t skip), but definitely a Rejuvenile. My desk is full of toys. I have toys on my Christmas list. I cannot imagine joining a kick ball league or taking up roller skating again, though.

As I was reading the book, it brought lots of people to mind – TW for her love of skipping (and about an hour after I read that particular chapter, some 40 year old dude was skipping through Target on Black Friday, sheesh), Ken ’cause of his toy collection, my dad and his war game thingies. This brought me to a conclusion – I’m not sure I know anyone who is NOT a Rejuvenile.

Interesting book. I’m glad I finally made time to read it (and that I had it on my A to Z list.)

Hero

It’s all YA all the time for me. It seems like every book on my TBR pile is YA. Weird, but I like it except that it makes me want to do a year long YA challenge or something. Anyway, the YA I’m blogging about right now is QUEER YA! Hero was pretty darn amusing and that’s high praise because I don’t really love comic book heroes and that’s what this story is about.

A boy, who happens to be gay also happens to have super powers. He struggles with a dad who doesn’t have super powers but used to be a super hero and who doesn’t want his son to be gay. He struggles with a mom who left him when he was young and, well… I won’t give away more of the plot line.

There’s a very happy ending though not everyone lives happily ever after – which is as it should be in the world of comic book super heroes and families, right?
