Sisters Red

Once again, I have to give Sassymonkey credit for recommending a GREAT book. Sisters Red was AWESOME! Retelling a fairy tale is tough but Jackson Pearce did a beautiful job with Rosie, Scarlett, their woodsman and their wolves. Brilliant work. Brilliant storytelling. I’ve always been a fan of Little Red Riding Hood – but forget that, just tell your kids the story of Rosie & Scarlett instead.

Wild Ride

I finally finished a book – yay me! It wasn’t the book, Wild Ride, that was the problem – it was me and my schedule. When I’m crazy busy, I don’t read. I’m too busy or too tired to read. I just want to do mindless things like playing some dumb puzzle game on my iPad… or sleep. Sleep is good. Really good. I need to do more sleeping. And more reading. Anyway, Wild Ride.

Jennifer Crusie and her sometimes partner in crime Bob Mayor – fun! Maybe not quite as fun as Agnes and the Hitman, but close. Very close. I particularly loved the ending (which will shock sassymonkey!)  Sometimes a demon just needs a little compassion and humanity tossed at him/her… you still can’t trust those demons but you can work with them.

Also… this one made me want to go to an amusement park, and that’s pure crazyness because I really hate amusement parks.

By the way, Crusie has a new solo book coming out soon… I just saw an email in my inbox offering me a review copy. Woohoo!

206 Bones

I like Kathy Reichs’ books on audio but we missed a few and in 206 Bones I found myself wishing I had read more about the Tempe and Ryan’s break-up. So, I reserved another book on audio, somewhere in between Break No Bones and 206 Bones so I could feel caught up.

Anyway, this one was good – typical Tempe adventures. Nice little side-trip to Chicagoland, which was fun in that “we live here” sort of way. Which is nice, since we don’t really like living here, ya know? 😉 And boy does Reichs like her similes.

What to Wear to See the Pope

We bought What to Wear to See the Pope ages ago, at the Gainesville Friends of the Library Sale, I think. When I put it on my From the Stacks (by Color) Challenge, I didn’t realize it was short stories. I sighed in frustration during the first story because I really wasn’t in the mood for short stories – and I was afraid I was just going to slog my way through it and hate it. Luckily, all of the stories were fun – and interesting and it wasn’t a slog at all.

I wonder if TW would let us rename the #prairiedogs after Saints… that would be awesome.

My Name is Mary Sutter

I wasn’t going to read My Name is Mary Sutter. TW said it was really good but still… my TBR list is long… and I hadn’t really heard anything about the book. But, when I realized I couldn’t extend the checkout period because the book has holds, I thought maybe it was something I should really read – it’s very rare that I can’t extend a checkout period at my library due to holds on a book. So, I started reading it… and could not put it down. I read until after midnight last night and if it had been a Friday or Saturday,  I’d have just read it straight through.

I wasn’t thrilled with the Mary/Jenny/Thomas triangle – that felt a little too Little Women-like for me, but it ended up working out just fine. Lots of unhappy endings, which is as it should be about a novel set in the Civil War period. Poor Dorothea Dix gets the shaft in this story, but that works too.

The Poet Prince

I didn’t enjoy The Poet Prince as much as I did the first two books in the Magdalene series. I think it’s because I didn’t like any of the “modern day” characters enough – or maybe there weren’t as many entries about them so I didn’t really get into their dilemma? I mean we got all of what, two paragraphs, about Peter and Petra. Two paragraphs. Please. I’m all for telling us the stories from the past but you have to keep us connected to the current characters, too.

Hello Kitty Must Die

I love the “Just Returned” shelf of the library. I always find interesting things there. Things like a book with a hot pink cover called Hello Kitty Must Die. If you like Dexter, you’re going to like this book. You might even like this book more than you like Dexter. (I know, I’m scaring you now aren’t I?)

Try it. Trust me. I take my serial killer books very seriously.

Alt Ed

Alt Ed is like The Breakfast Club but without Ally Sheedy. Or without any of the really cool characters that made up The Breakfast Club, now that I think about it. The Breakfast Club Lite? Errr. It wasn’t a bad book, it was a nice book. But it’s impossible to not compare it to the movie – and of course this nice little book will come up way short in those comparisons. If I hadn’t grown up with The Breakfast Club, I’d probably like Alt Ed a heck of a lot more than I did.

Goth Girl Rising

TW was right, Goth Girl writing letters to Neil Gaiman was a nice touch. Without the letters, I don’t think I’d have enjoyed Goth Girl Rising nearly as much. The poetry pages were a nice touch, as well – slowly adding stanzas until we get to the end. Lyga does a nice job of building us up and then bringing us back down safely – or as safely as you can get when you’re dealing with Kyra.

Great sequel.

Normally I want a series I like to continue but I think in this case, Lyga should call it finished.
