The Complete Book of Home Organization

Oh look, another book by a blogger I love! I’ve been reading A Bowl Full of Lemons for a very, very long time. So of course I was going to read her book, The Complete Book of Home Organization.

Like her blog, her book is super pretty and useful. I enjoyed it quite a lot. And, I even re-organized my kitchen a little bit after reading the first few pages on kitchen organization.

Wilkie Collins: A Brief Life

Look at me finishing another book. Yay me. Go me! Unfortunately, it took me a good two weeks to read an incredibly short book. But, it could be worse. Anyway…

During a really quick trip to the library, I spotted Wilkie Collins: A Brief Life on the shelf and grabbed it. This was not the kind of book I should have been choosing (which is why it took me weeks to read it) but I did because I love Wilkie Collins.

To be clear, I love “The Woman in White” and I have a complicated (ahem) relationship with “The Moonstone.” I’ve read TWiW multiple times and would love to read it again. (In fact, while I was reading this book I decided I should LISTEN to TWiW on audio because I’ve never done that. Hi TW, sorry… lol.)

This biography was… good. Not great. It was a little dry and I’m not sure the author really likes Collins very much. (Weird, right?) Whatever. I enjoyed it. (And, besides listening to TWiW on audio, I’m going to spend some time reading all of Collins’ books — I’m surprised by how many I haven’t read at all.)

Home is Where My People Are

Look! I finished a book! It took forever, which is ridiculous because Home is Where My People Are should have been a quick read, just like reading through the archives of a blog — because that’s pretty much what the book felt like. (Probably because I read BooMama’s blog for years and years.) But, my life is still not “normal” — did you know I have a new grandson? And, a new house? And, we’re having a housewarming party? And, and, and…

Anyway, I enjoyed Sophie’s book. This might surprised you because I’m not a religious person AT ALL but I do enjoy a good memoir. I sure wish our library had this in large print because I do believe TW’s mom would love Sophie. Maybe I’ll buy it for her for her Kindle. Yea, I’ll do that. Someone remind me.

Memories Flow in Our Veins: Forty Years of Women’s Writing from CALYX

TW bought Memories Flow in Our Veins: Forty Years of Women’s Writing from CALYX at Wild Iris on Independent Bookstore Day. Thank goodness because, as I previously mentioned, we had no books to read. Heh.

I really enjoyed this collection. The poetry was particularly good.

Survivor: The Ultimate Game

When we got to Florida, we didn’t have a library card and all of our books were packed but we needed to READ. So I opened a box in search of SOMETHING and found…nothing. A bunch of notebooks, journals, kids books, random papers and… Survivor: The Ultimate Game.

Totally amusing especially since I have never seen the first season of Survivor. I really want to see the first season now.

Three Non-Fiction

Right before we went to Florida to close on our house (!!!) I saw these three books on the new arrivals shelf at our library and they looked good, so I grabbed them. I’m glad I did, I enjoyed them all. (I might have to check out Color Labs again, if one of my new libraries has it…)

Improbably Libraries was fun — I need a little free library for my front yard.

The Public Library made me want to travel around the world and visit ALL of the libraries.

Color Lab made me wish I had time to paint. Wah!

Wildflower

I was a little low on reserved books so I decided to check out Wildflower. I’m a Drew Barrymore fan and it looked like a quick and easy read. It definitely was that — quick and easy. I didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. It was fine. (It was also weird to be reading a memoir and then see that she and her husband are splitting up. That’s totally not covered in the book, sheesh.)

How to Grow Up

I’m a Michelle Tea fan. My Michelle T. is a Michelle Tea fan. The two Michelle’s have a lot of personality traits in common. So, I was excited to read How to Grow Up and equally excited for my Michelle T. to read it.

I don’t think either of us were disappointed.

Speaking for myself, I don’t exactly love all of the traits the grown up Michelle Tea has but I have a lot of respect for how she DID grow up and the fact that she owns her grown up addictions and decisions.

PS. Mutha Magazine is fabulous.

DIY, Dammit

I think with DIY, Dammit I’m going to call it quits with DIY craft books for awhile. I enjoyed it, but they’re beginning to feel pretty redundant, in terms of the kinds of projects included.

The best part of the book was the intro, the intermission, and amusing commentary. The projects themselves were fine but there wasn’t anything that called to me. Ho hum.
