The Curse of the Wendigo

I reserved The Curse of the Wendigo in audio, right before we went on our house hunting trip. It seemed like it would be a fun book to listen to, the Gainesville connection and all that. But, it didn’t arrive til we got home. (Figures, right?)

Oh boy. This was one hell of a graphic horror novel — I wasn’t expecting that. I mean, I know we read the first book a zillion years ago but I do not remember it being like this. I even wondered a few times if I was wrong and this wasn’t a YA series because it was… wow. Shudder. Don’t read it if you have scary monster kind of nightmares, sheesh.

Read it if you like good writing and interesting characters, because it has both.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street

I finally finished The Watchmaker of Filigree Street — gosh that took a long time to read. It started slowly for me, or maybe I was just tired, and then moved really quickly and I couldn’t put it down.

The only thing I didn’t like is not knowing how Mori got the power … that’s it, that’s all I wanted to know, in the end. Hmph.

I enjoyed it. Also, the octopus! Gah.

Zombie Cows, Sort Of

Texasebeth recommended Apocalypse Cow and I put it on my TBR list. Then some other people mentioned it in threads about books so I moved it up the list and reserved it. While I was at it, I reserved World War Moo. I figured what the heck, right?

I liked Apocalypse Cow pretty well but I didn’t love it, love it. I liked it enough to read the second one which I ended up liking better (that never happens!) If there’s a third one, I’d read that, too.

Death Marked

I decided to go ahead and read Death Marked (the sequel to Death Sworn) since it’s a two book series and I could just read it quickly and be done with it. Heh.

I actually kind of liked this one LESS than the first one. The whole “he’ll kill you if I tell him to” thing really bugged me. Ileana should not have been THAT type of character. It just felt wrong and stupid and it just didn’t seem right at all.

Whatevs. It was fine. Not great, not horrible. There were moments when I really liked the story (and the characters.)

Two from the Cybils

Death Sworn was… not bad. Not my favorite, but not bad. I liked Ileni and I am kind of looking forward to the next book (which is on my library cart now.)

I loved, loved, loved, loved, loved Death By Toilet Paper and didn’t expect to. That darn kid broke my heart over and over again. You don’t realize just how good your toilet paper was until your family can’t afford to buy it any more. *sniff* Also, professional sweepstakes folks, haha. I love those people.

The Boy Who Killed Demons

The Boy Who Killed Demons is a creepy book. I found Henry to be maybe even creepier than the demons. But maybe you have to be kind of creepy in order to survive seeing demons… and then killing demons.

What I don’t understand is why the demons didn’t take this kid out when they realized he could see them. I don’t get that. It seemed… odd. And, the whole way through the book, I puzzled over this and found it difficult to really believe in the story, lol.

I liked the book, stayed up late to finish it, but I didn’t love it because that part just didn’t fly for me.

Housewitch

I wasn’t sure what to read but remembered TW said Housewitch was surprisingly good. So, that seemed like a good choice.

A few chapters in and I thought I’d made a bad choice and that TW had gotten this book confused with something else. It was fine but not “surprisingly good” — turns out, I just needed to wait a tiny bit longer because before I knew it, I’d stayed up until after midnight to finish it. Couldn’t put it down.

I’m not even really sure why I couldn’t put it down. It was just surprisingly good. Maybe it was a spell on the book or something…

Serendipity Market

I have no idea how Serendipity Market landed on our library cart. It was YA so I assumed it was a Cybil. Nope, it wasn’t a Cybil. No idea.

Anyway, it was super short and very quick to read, which was good since I started it late in the evening and was able to finish it before I went to bed.

I really liked the retelling of the fairy tales but the way they were connected to the Serendipity Market and bringing the earth back into balance was never really clear. You just had to go with it and accept it as the way of things. Another 50 pages to really connect the dots would have been awesome.
