Kissing the Witch

Awhile back, Sassymonkey was trying to come up with books for a fairy tales challenge of some sort. I gave her some ideas but generally speaking, she came up with her list on her own. As I was searching, I realized I had never read Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins. Crazy, we read a lot of fairy tales around here. So, I reserved it.

And it was terrific. I really liked the way one fairy tale moved into the next. All of the connections between the women. Really excellent idea and one that should have been done before – or maybe it has and I’ve been missing it?

And She Was…

And She Was… what? That’s the question, what was she? Who was she? Why in the heck did I spend almost a full week trying to read this book? The answer to the last question is the easy one – because Staci and TW both recommended it. While TW has steered me wrong in the past, Staci has not, so I stuck it out.

Mostly I’m left with, “huh?” But the last half of the book DID interest me and I had high hopes. Unfortunately, once I was finished, I just felt let down. It could have been really good. In places it WAS really good. Aleut mummies, women power, Alaskan bars – what’s not to love? Unfortunately, a lot. It could have been SO good. But it wasn’t.

(Don’t feel badly Staci, I’ll still read what you recommend in the future.)

She’s Such a Geek

I’m not a geek, not really. Certainly not the type of geek found in She’s Such a Geek. My lack of geekness doesn’t prevent me from enjoying geeks or books about geeks or stories written by geeks. Thank goodness for that or else I’d have totally missed out on the pleasure derived from reading the stories of people like Analee, Violet Blue, Wendy and all of the other geek girls who shared their stories in this fabulous little book.

Being a BlogHer, I obviously enjoyed Wendy’s story about BlogHerCon vs DefCon. Loved it and am extra sorry that I missed the very first BlogHer Con and am extra grateful not to have missed BlogHerCon 6 and 7! If you’re a BlogHer and you’ve seen that little book ad on the left nav for She’s Such a Geek and wondered if it was worth reading – it totally is. If you have daughters, you should buy it and put it on their bookshelves – even if they aren’t geek girls. It’s not just a “geek positive” books, it’s a “woman positive” book. Read it and share it with everyone. You won’t be sorry.

Original Sins

I finally finished Lisa Alther’s Original Sins. I’ve only been reading it for weeks. I can’t remember when it has taken me so long to finish a book but it wasn’t the book’s fault, it was mine – I was distracted. So, about the book. It was much better than Kinflicks but again, very doggone long. I liked the characters quite a bit better. I liked watching them move from childhood into the adulthood – figuring out how to navigate through racism and feminism and a wee bit into orientation. And, I liked the ending.

Kinflicks

We have a bunch of Lisa Alther books sitting on the TBR pile from the library. TW read them all last month or the month before that. When she started reading the first one, I knew right away how it appeared on our shelf – Chalice Chick was so excited about Alther’s newest book, and some of her old ones, that I headed to the library website and reserved all they had.

So, I read Kinflicks and found it as CC described – Rita Mae without the hokey (and the damn cats). I’m looking forward to reading the two that CC says are the best (though my library has neither so I’m waiting for them to appear via ILL for now).

Loved the snake handling. Loved the moving from relationship to relationship and adapting a new personality each time. The only thing that I didn’t love were the super long chapters. I prefer to break at a chapter and Alther made it difficult to do that, lol.

Tramps Like Us

I have never read a book with so much gay boy sex in it. And, I hope to never read one again. Good grief. Tramps Like Us wasn’t erotica, or at least I don’t think it was but I’m not a gay man so what the hell do I know about it, right? It made me almost physically ill at times because I know how it turns out… in real life. 🙁

The Sunday List of Dreams

Another Radish book down, is it two or three more to go? I am not sure, I’ve lost track and they are beginning to blend in together just a little bit. Though Sunday List of Dreams was different from the other two in some significant ways (main character was just a little more reserved than the others and errr uhhh ummm the whole sex toy industry thing….sheesh).

TW didn’t really like this one, she said. The person who first recommended Elegant Gathering didn’t like this one very much. I, on the otherhand, liked it quite a bit more than Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn. It’s not often that you read a book about sex toys and the “womyn’s festival”.

Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn

Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn, another Kris Radish, is pure chick lit with a dumb title. Any number of great lines from the book could have been used as the title, too bad something else wasn’t selected. Anyway, back to the pure chick lit – that’s what it was. Nothing really new or unusual about it, unlike the Elegant Gathering of White Snows which all felt new and unusual. Pure chick lit (and as you know if you read my book blogging regularly, I like chick lit.)

Elegant Gathering of White Snows

Someone on a message board at my place of business recommended Kris Radish’s books and she suggested I start with Elegant Gathering of White Snows. Gee, I wonder how she knew this would be the perfect book for me?

It’s sort of like The Red Tent in that female energy sort of way. Fantastic female characters and of course they’ve experienced pretty much every single issue/problem a woman can face. Just go read it, and enjoy it.
