The Witch Hunter’s Tale is the third book in the Midwife Mysteries series and it was the best book of the series so far. That’s saying quite a lot since I love this series.
SO much happened and it kept me reading even when I was really tired and wanted to go to sleep. The ending was perfect. So much drama. I loved it.

I love Cherie Priest. Loved Maplecroft: The Borden Dispatches. It was excellent. Creepy, but excellent. I’m interested in the fact that I keep seeing it as “book one” — what the heck is going to be book two? I guess I’ll find out, eventually, right? Oh, I see — not a sequel, Chapelwood. Nice. Can’t wait!

Not a very auspicious start for the new year, eh? Four days in and I’ve just now finished the first book — a book I started reading about, oh, a month ago? No big deal — Nellie Taft (the book, not the woman) was a slow read and I’ve been busy doing all the things. My reading rate will pick up and drop off and pick up again. As usual. But, back to Nellie Taft…
I had high hopes for this biography but it was like too many biographies — a bit dull and textbook-like. Too bad since Nellie Taft was pretty darn interesting. Overall, I”m glad I read this one.
Neverhome was a beautifully written book. I was surprised by just how wonderful it was.
A woman heads off to fight for the Union in the civil war, leaving her husband behind, because she was better suited for fighting than he was. She was a good soldier but of course, bad things happen and, well, it was beautiful. You should read this one.
I finished a book and couldn’t decide what to read next so I grabbed a Naiad that TW bought at the little used bookstore in Cleveland last month. I should have reached for something that’s been in my stacks longer but I was feeling lazy and it was there. It was also amusing to us because of the title “The Love of Good Women” and because it was written by the author of Patience and Sarah.
And it was … what you’d expect. Old, really old, lesbian fiction. Not great. Not horrible. A classic.

Yes this was a BlogHer Bookclub pick from an entire lifetime ago. No I never read it back then. Yes, I know how far behind on my TBR list I am, thanks.
So yea — a book from my stacks. Yippee! I enjoyed it. I also didn’t know there was a sequel. That’s going to have to go on my TBR list for next year.

Since I can see the end of my Cybils shortlist challenge tunnel, it seemed like a good idea to reserve some of the new books in YA series I’ve started but hadn’t quite kept up with.
First, the third book in the Cahill Witch series, Sisters’ Fate turned out to be better than I expected. After a rough few pages when I barely remembered what the series was about, I settled in and really enjoyed it. I’m not a big fan of Cate, which is too bad since she’s the narrator — but I love all of the other characters and eventually found myself appreciating Cate, too.
And, the third book in the Finishing School series, Waistcoats & Weaponry was possibly the best book in the series. I need some sort of family tree thingy though to see where all of the tie-ins to the Soulless series are. Some are obvious, some are less so (particularly since I read the Soulless books so long ago.) I also need another book in the series — quickly. This one was so much fun.

Total chick lit. Driving with the Top Down was fun, if a little far-fetched. The way Colleen and Tamara found Bitty. The way it ended for Bitty. Huge reach but it worked and it was fun. (If you read it, just skip the prologue, it’s dumb and unnecessary. It’s short but whatever, it caused me to roll my eyes.)

Best Sarah Waters book in a very long time. I loved The Paying Guests. Every character was perfect. The story line was terrific (though of course you had to know that Frances and Lilian were going to end up in that kind of mess.) Perfect ending. I loved every darn thing about it.
The second book in the Midwife Mystery series, The Harlot’s Tale was just as awesome — if not more awesome — than the first one. Oh so clever and I found myself chuckling several times. This troubled TW. She says I laughed more during this book than I did reading Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (which is probably true since I errr don’t really find The Bloggess as funny as others do, particularly in large doses.)
Anyway — loved it. I did not see that ending coming. The part about Edward, though I should have since it paves the way for Joseph to be… Joseph. Can’t wait for #3.
