Spy Mom: The Adventures of Sally Sin

A few weeks ago, Sassymonkey asked me if I’d read (heard of) the Sally Sin books. I hadn’t but they looked interesting, so I reserved them. TW read the second book and then realized that the other book actually contained two separate books under one cover. Cool – I took book 2 back and picked up Spy Mom a couple of days ago, and could not put it down. Totally fun. I love Sally Sin. I mean Lucy. I hope to goodness that there’s another book coming because I really need another book.

With a Name Like Sparkle Hayter….

I reserved Nice Girls Finish Last and Revenge of the Cootie Girls because I saw the cool pulp fiction-y covers on the library’s recently reviewed spinner. I am a sucker for a good pulp fiction style cover. And once they arrived, I noticed they were written by Sparkle Hayter. Hahaha. I love her name. I love it so much that I actually own Naked Brunch (but have never managed to read it.)

I was a little unhappy when I realized Nice Girls Finish Last was not the first book in the series. I do not like reading books out of order. But, I didn’t have anything else handy that I really felt like reading and I figured I’d take a shot. I still wish I’d read them in order but I enjoyed both of these books a lot. Enough that I’m thinking about reserving the rest of the books in the series. I like Robin. She’s a great character and her supporting cast is pretty darn good, too.

How to Hepburn

My mom sent me the link to How to Hepburn when it’s price was reduced on Kindle. I didn’t buy it but I did immediately reserve it because I am a Katharine Hepburn fan. Possibly because I am kind of like her, lol. Don’t wallow, just get on with it. Marriage – bah. Etc. etc. etc.  Err the Spencer Tracy thing… not so much. But, I’m not judging her. We all have our fucked up baggage to deal with. Also, it kind of worked well for her (see that no marriage thing…)

Fun book. I liked it a lot.  There’s nothing new in here, nothing surprising if you know anything about Katharine Hepburn – still, I almost wish I’d bought it after all.

Saints Astray

Book two – Saints Astray… I read it. A long time ago (I’m way behind, darn conference and redesign…) I liked it. I liked the way the women (whose names I’ve forgotten by now) hooked up with the rock band and the rock band found their cause. I can totally see that happening. This would actually be a fun series. GMO & lesbian partner go out and save the world, or at least change the world – right wrongs, do good things, etc. Fun!

Santa Olivia

TW read the second book and warned me that I should read the first book, Santa Olivia, because I don’t like reading series out of order. Totally true and I’m glad I read this one first, there’s too much story that I’d have been confused, I think.

Post-apocalyptic lesbian fiction – awesome.  The little saints are great characters. I think the polyamorous relationship was surprisingly well done, too. And, I really like Loupe and Pilar together.  I also love the female boxing storyline.  I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Code Name Verity

Code Name Verity didn’t really feel like YA. In fact, I suspect the average YA reading kid won’t like it. It’s not about teens and while the main characters were young women, they weren’t that young. It’s deep. It’s complex. And as you read, you know this is not going to end well. And it doesn’t. Except that it does because war is hell and sometimes you have to face your fears and do what it is you fear you would never be able to do. I hated that part but it was right. It was what made the story really worth reading.

I really liked both Queenie (aka Julie) and Maddie. I liked them a lot. I liked them all the way til the end and I still like them. Those are women you want on your team – and as friends.

The Unruly Passions of Eugenie R.

The Unruly Passions of Eugenie R. was good. It could have been excellent had the editor (errr author) had a better editor. When beautiful writing bogs down the narrative, you’re in trouble. When your scattering of French phrases becomes a distraction, you’re in trouble.

Other than that – well done.

France in the mid to late 1800s wasn’t a cake walk for women, in case you didn’t know that.  #patriarchy. 😉

The Time in Between

TW loved The Time In Between – she said it was like the Pink Carnation books but not like them. Which makes things pretty clear, doesn’t it?

Woman.

Spy.

There you go. That’s how it’s like the Pink Carnation books.

Otherwise, not so much.  There are some little romances but not a lot. 1930s and 1940s. Spain, Morocco, Portugal.  Nazis. Nationalists.

There’s not much to laugh about, really.  It’s all very serious.

But she was right, it was very good and I’m glad I read it – even if a 600 page hardback novel killed my already sore wrists for a couple of days.

When She Woke

I am a fan of The Scarlet Letter and tend to be a little hard on books that attempt to recreate that story – but When She Woke was EXCELLENT.  Abortion is murder and convicts of all kinds have their skin color changed (color based on level of crime) and sent back into the community. As you can imagine, “Reds” have a pretty tough time since those are the ones who’ve been convicted of murder.  Feminists run an underground railroad helping women who’ve been convicted for having abortions.

I really liked Hannah, and while I didn’t love the choice she made there at the end – it was the one that made the most sense for her and it made for a solid ending.
