Lips Touch Three Times

Really interesting that author Laini Taylor has two books on the Cybils shortlist – a middle grade fantasy/scifi, Dreamdark, and a YA fantasy/scifi, Lips Touch Three Times. I liked Dreamdark a lot, even though it was a sequel and I had not read the first book. I liked Lips Touch Three Times too – though I’m not a big short story fan. Brilliant idea, to write three stories related to kissing. Very very smart idea – and interesting stories, too. And stories that don’t exactly have a happily ever after, woken with a kiss, prince and princess ending. Very smart. I like Laini Taylor.

Beautiful Malice

It’s disconcerting to read a novel written by “Rebecca James” – particularly a novel like Beautiful Malice. I’d like to keep our Rebecca James far, far away from this book because she’s already got such a thing for “being safe” – this book might just scare her over the edge. I could NOT put it down even though I wanted to put it down because I knew really bad stuff was going to happen – I just had to keep reading and reading and reading.

Now someone tell me – is this or is this NOT YA? When I first started hearing about it, before release, I heard it was YA. But, it’s not catalogued YA. It feels a little YA but then again NOT YA. I know a lot of YAs are going to read this thing and a lot of adults might not… What do you think?

Paper Towns

Good grief John Green is brilliant. He writes such smart teenagers. I really like that. There’s nothing worse than reading YA and having a bunch of stupid stereotypical vapid teens. In Paper Towns, even the vapid teens were smart, or at least not stupid. If I’m not careful, I might find myself a bigger John Green fangirl than Sassymonkey.

How to Say Goodbye in Robot

I’m finally starting to dig into the YA books from the Cybils shortlist. How to Say Goodbye in Robot was a nice book to relax with, after the long crazy week that is BlogHer Con (and its aftermath.) I expected to read it slowly but it was so darn good that I read it in just two sittings. Excellent book, an unhappy/happy ending. Just right.

girlspoken

Once again, Sassymonkey recommended a great book – one that she can’t get at her library, even though she’s Canadian and it’s a book filled with Canadian girls’ voices. I really liked the pieces they selected for the book – nice well-rounded selections. Not all miserable. Not all happy. Just right.

Buy this one for your teen daughter (unless she’s 14 and swears she hates poetry, then just buy it and leave it lying around – she might just read a wee bit if you aren’t watching.)

The Last Olympian

I finally finished The Last Olympian. That took for freaking ever. Crazy since I really like Percy Jackson and his friends (and family.) Can I just say, I really liked the end? I did! I liked the end of this book and the end of this particular series.  Now onto Riordan’s new series… I’ve heard it’s better than Percy Jackson… I find that hard to believe.

I won’t even be here for the grand opening – I’ll be in San Francisco for BlogHer Food.

Sisters Red

Once again, I have to give Sassymonkey credit for recommending a GREAT book. Sisters Red was AWESOME! Retelling a fairy tale is tough but Jackson Pearce did a beautiful job with Rosie, Scarlett, their woodsman and their wolves. Brilliant work. Brilliant storytelling. I’ve always been a fan of Little Red Riding Hood – but forget that, just tell your kids the story of Rosie & Scarlett instead.

Captivate

I finished Captivate a few days ago and forgot to blog it. I’d kind of like to forget the book in general because that is SO not the way the storyline was supposed to go! And the ending… cliffhanger hell. I suppose that’s the way to get teens to come back for more. But sheesh.

Pixies. Weres. Valkyrie. Elves.

Next book, we’ll throw some Gods into the mix and we’ll finish this thing, right? Right????

The Knife of Never Letting Go

I really wanted to read The Knife of Never Letting Go – but I couldn’t do it. I hated the boy from the very first page – and I had high hopes that I’d like him better once he met the girl but TW said it gets worse. I just couldn’t bring myself to read it at all last week during my vacation. So – I took it back to the library, along with its sequel. I just couldn’t read it.
