I sound like a broken record here, don’t I? Among the Mad was excellent. Another great Maisie Dobbs book. I keep waiting for a bad one. Or a not excellent one. A mediocre one. You know there are always a couple that just aren’t amazing when you’re reading a series.
I think I’m going to call 2013 the year of Maisie Dobbs because I’ve enjoyed these so darn much.

Another great Maisie Dobbs, on audio. I love these. An Incomplete Revenge was awesome — I loved the setting, hop picking in Kent (fascinating) and the Roma. I also loved B.T. Drummond. I love the way the book ended. I just plain loved everything about it.

A few weeks ago, I saw a blog post that had a list of creepy books (or maybe it was creepy book covers?) for Halloween. Oh, well. Maybe it was a month ago, not a few weeks ago? Whatever. Time flies and I still haven’t caught up with book blogging. Whatevs. I’ll get there. Eventually.
Anyway, on this list were a couple of books that I realized I had not read. One of them was Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived In the Castle. I like Shirley Jackson. This one was available on audio and we didn’t have any other audios to listen to so… I reserved it.
Weirdest book EVER.
Very creepy.
I think TW and I will always say “Silly Merricat” and “Lazy Merricat”, just out of the blue, forever and ever. It’s that kind of book.

I’m way behind on book blogging. Gah. I am afraid I’m never going to catch up … oh wait, I forgot I’m reading a book that I’m not really enjoying so it’s taking me a really long time, which should give me time to catch up on the books that I (mostly) enjoyed. All Cybils…
First, The Storyteller (on audio). I’m a Jodi Picoult fan except for the book she wrote with her daughter — that one, I did not love. This one… it’s YA but not very YA, if you ask me. Yes, Minka was a young girl when the war began and Anya, the parallel story character was also a young girl, and Sage was also fairly young but… this didn’t seem very YA to me. (Updated: Turns out it’s not YA. I ended up with the Picoult book that has the same title as a YA book I reserved. Total confusion ensued. NOT YA, which is good. I’m short a Cybil, which is not good.)
It also was very very depressing, as WWII books can be when they go into great detail about those who were at Auschwitz.
The ending, I saw coming — though knowing Picoult I expected her to try and double back and make it not be the twisted ending that I saw coming. Nope. It was, as I expected. Now I’m left wondering how Sage is going to deal with this for the rest of her life.
Typical Picoult book. If you like her, you’ll like this. If you don’t, then you will not.
Sigh. I’m disappointed in Dexter’s Final Cut. So disappointed. I get that Dexter wasn’t a good guy, even though most of us grew to really love him. But… this. This was too much. It’s ok to kill off the Dexter series, it’s not ok to fuck with the people who’ve read your books for all of these years and have come to appreciate the characters and the storytelling.
It’s not OK at all. If you’ve ready all of the other books, don’t read this one. 🙁

I loved Messenger of Truth — it might be my favorite since the first book (it’s #4.) I’m even getting used to the new reader (we’re listening to them on audio.)
So sad about Lizzie, though.

Book three, Pardonable Lies was not my favorite Maisie Dobbs and not just because the narrator changed between book two and three (we’re doing this series on audio, now.)
Maisie was… not herself, which is probably as it should be but it made for a less fun adventure and a more serious, thoughtful story. I want the fun adventure with only a little bit of serious and thoughtfulness.
I also flipped from #TeamDean to #TeamInspector, Andrew Dean bugged me a lot in this one.

I enjoyed the first Maisie Dobbs so much that I immediately reserved the second book, Birds of a Feather. But, I accidentally reserved it in audio. Not intentional, definitely, because I have a lot of audio books on my reserve list and I try to keep it to less than three because otherwise they all come in at once and we don’t have enough time to listen to them before they have to back. I also wasn’t sure we’d like the English accents in audio — sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t. This time — we did!
Another good story. I really like all of these characters (but I hope Maisie picks Dr Dean over Detective Stanton… jus sayin’.)
I’ve reserved the next book, in audio (sigh — all of my audios will probably come in next week and we’ll have to return some unread! I hate it when that happens…)

Every Day is the YA trouble book of all time — there will never be a YA trouble book that has more trouble than this one. It’s impossible.
Because A wakes up in the body of a different 16 year old every single day. This means A deals with every single YA trouble under the sun. It gets particularly problematic when A wakes up in the body of Justin and falls in love with Justin’s girlfriend and tries to figure out how he/she can have a relationship with Rhiannon (and Rhiannon tries to figure out how she can dump Justin and have a relationship with A.)
Oy.
It was interesting — mostly because we couldn’t figure out how this was going to end. Since A obviously couldn’t stay in someone else’s body. It did all wrap up with a neat, but sad, little ending. An ending I didn’t particularly like but an ending that made sense. As much sense as a book about someone who has no body of his/her own and moves around to a new body every day for his/her whole life can make.
We listened to Liar & Spy on audio, and it’s on the Cybils shortlist. It was a lot of fun — nice little twist.
I was confused by why Georges never saw his mom… even working long, horrible hours, most moms I know would have seen their kids for even just a minute… so I knew something was up but I didn’t know THAT’s what it was. Interesting.
Fun book. We enjoyed it.
