Highway to Hell

I didn’t mean to start reading Highway to Hell. I simply lost the book I was supposed to be reading and this one was nearby. If I had realized it was the third in the series, I’d have worked harder to find the book I’d lost. I hate reading a series out of order.

Maybe that’s why it took me so long to finish it?

Nah. It took me so long because I was a) exhausted post-BlogHerCon b) sick c) working my butt off.

If I hadn’t been experiencing all three of those things at once, I’d have finished it in a day. And probably enjoyed it a good bit more than I did.

It was a fun book. It must by YA but I’m too exhausted, sick and busy to double check. If it isn’t labeled YA, it should be.

Demons. Evil geniuses. Brujas. Great girl power characters.

I have the first two books in the series now and I look forward to going back and starting at the beginning.

**updated** No wonder the characters in this book seemed so familiar… we read book 1, Prom Dates from Hell in 2007. And loved it.

Thaw

Another Cybil down… Thaw was good but it’s another one of those books that adults think kids should read (and love) and I don’t think kids will.

And, it’s a BOY problem book. And boy does he have problems, GBS isn’t even his biggest problem. His biggest problem is that he’s an ASS and we get to blame his ASS of a dad.

I’d like to speak with a teenager who has read this one…

Not Flesh Nor Feathers

Yay for Cherie Priest! Not Flesh Nor Feathers was excellent, as expected (since I read the first 50 pages before putting it down in favor of reading book 2 first.)

I love Eden. She’s a great character. I love her supporting characters, too. I was shocked by the ending of this one. And a wee bit sad too. But, it was a nice way to handle a situation… errr I’d say more but I don’t want to spoil it for y’all. Just read the series.

Quaker Summer

I think we bought Quaker Summer at Books a Million the week we moved here, which happens to also be the week before Books a Million closed causing me to hate them for the rest of my life.

Quaker Summer is also on my From the Stacks Challenge list. It’s blue.

It took me a long time to read it because I’ve been a little busy. Family visits. Hospital stays. A tiny little conference coming up. Stuff like that.

It wasn’t a great book, but it wasn’t a horrible book either. A nice piece of Christian chick lit with good characters. The storyline was a little much but that’s ok, it was fun just the same.

Priceless Memories

I don’t really love Bob Barker, though maybe I did when I was a kid and got to stay home from school sick and watch Price is Right. I only barely remember Truth or Consequences. Now that he’s no longer the host of Price is Right, it seems kind of sad. Not like I’m old, exactly, just like the end of a very very long era.

So yea, when I saw Priceless Memories on the library shelf, I didn’t pick it up. I went home and reserved it in large print because I thought TW’s mom might also like to read it. She did. TW enjoyed it too.

I didn’t find the book well written, as autobiographies of stars often are – it was redundant and not super well written. But I did definitely enjoy the flashbacks and the looks into Barker’s life, from Barker’s point of view. I just with Dorothy Jo had written a book before she died. Now that would have been a book to read.

Wings to the Kingdom

I found myself with the third book in the Eden Moore series by @CMPriest and realized I had not read the second one. So I took book three back and grabbed Wings to the Kingdom (Which is when I discovered these are shelved as YA. I don’t understand why they are YA. Wierd.)

Wings to the Kingdom was just as good as Four and Twenty Blackbirds. I’m a “battlefield” fan, particularly when I’m not being dragged to them and can just read about other people being dragged to them. I didn’t see enough ghosts during all of my visits to battlefields and I certainly never saw Green Eyes. Had I seen more ghosts or Green Eyes, I’d probably enjoy battlefield visits a wee bit more. Maybe.

Looking forward to grabbing Not Flesh Nor Feathers this week.

I finally finished Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, a book I was very much looking forward to until sassymonkey indicated it wasn’t great.

She was right. It wasn’t great. It was a brilliant idea but I pictured something as wonderfully bizarre as a Christopher Moore book. It wasn’t that wonderfully bizarre. If I hadn’t already had Chris Moore’s version (or what I imagine a Chris Moore version would look like) in my head, I’d have probably enjoyed P&P&Z a good bit more than I did.

Worth reading, yes. Fabulous, not so much.

Magic Thief: Lost

This is book two in the Magic Thief series, another one that I plucked from my Amazon holding list and I think Lost might have been better than the first one. (A rare occurrence for a second book.)

There are hidden “rune” messages throughout the book and I always spend the time figuring out what they say. TW doesn’t bother with them. The messages in the last book were better than the ones in this book.

I wonder what will happen to poor Conn in book three… and I wonder what will happen to the magic.
