Captivate

I finished Captivate a few days ago and forgot to blog it. I’d kind of like to forget the book in general because that is SO not the way the storyline was supposed to go! And the ending… cliffhanger hell. I suppose that’s the way to get teens to come back for more. But sheesh.

Pixies. Weres. Valkyrie. Elves.

Next book, we’ll throw some Gods into the mix and we’ll finish this thing, right? Right????

The Knife of Never Letting Go

I really wanted to read The Knife of Never Letting Go – but I couldn’t do it. I hated the boy from the very first page – and I had high hopes that I’d like him better once he met the girl but TW said it gets worse. I just couldn’t bring myself to read it at all last week during my vacation. So – I took it back to the library, along with its sequel. I just couldn’t read it.

Some graphic novels (non Cybil)

First – Nemi. Love it. I want the whole series. A girl with an attitude. A lot of attitude.

Next – The Grave Robber’s Daughter. Short, easy to read, just creepy enough to be fun.

Then – The Chuckling Whatsit (author also write The Grave Robber’s Daughter). This one was also excellent, but a little long. At one point I felt like I just wanted to skip to the end but I stuck with it and was glad I did.

Last – The Man Who Grew Young. Why do I feel like I’ve already read this? That’s what I kept thinking, all the way through. Familiar. Interesting but… it doesn’t quite work for me.

M is for Magic

How the heck did I miss M is for Magic? I mean I know I’m not the biggest Gaiman fan in the world (I like him but I don’t go crazy or anything) but I do tend to read new releases by “big” children’s fiction and YA fiction authors pretty quickly. Still, I missed it and was glad I happened to see it on the YA shelf the other day. Great short stories. I did indeed laugh out loud several times. And I learned what a “gonk” is, so that was cool, too.  That’s what I like about Gaiman, I always learn something new while being entertained.

206 Bones

I like Kathy Reichs’ books on audio but we missed a few and in 206 Bones I found myself wishing I had read more about the Tempe and Ryan’s break-up. So, I reserved another book on audio, somewhere in between Break No Bones and 206 Bones so I could feel caught up.

Anyway, this one was good – typical Tempe adventures. Nice little side-trip to Chicagoland, which was fun in that “we live here” sort of way. Which is nice, since we don’t really like living here, ya know? 😉 And boy does Reichs like her similes.

What to Wear to See the Pope

We bought What to Wear to See the Pope ages ago, at the Gainesville Friends of the Library Sale, I think. When I put it on my From the Stacks (by Color) Challenge, I didn’t realize it was short stories. I sighed in frustration during the first story because I really wasn’t in the mood for short stories – and I was afraid I was just going to slog my way through it and hate it. Luckily, all of the stories were fun – and interesting and it wasn’t a slog at all.

I wonder if TW would let us rename the #prairiedogs after Saints… that would be awesome.

My Name is Mary Sutter

I wasn’t going to read My Name is Mary Sutter. TW said it was really good but still… my TBR list is long… and I hadn’t really heard anything about the book. But, when I realized I couldn’t extend the checkout period because the book has holds, I thought maybe it was something I should really read – it’s very rare that I can’t extend a checkout period at my library due to holds on a book. So, I started reading it… and could not put it down. I read until after midnight last night and if it had been a Friday or Saturday,  I’d have just read it straight through.

I wasn’t thrilled with the Mary/Jenny/Thomas triangle – that felt a little too Little Women-like for me, but it ended up working out just fine. Lots of unhappy endings, which is as it should be about a novel set in the Civil War period. Poor Dorothea Dix gets the shaft in this story, but that works too.

Need

So Need is about Faeries? And Were? Who knew? For some reason I thought it was just a regular old teen trouble novel. Silly me.

It wasn’t quite as good as Holly Black’s faeries but it was darn good. The dialogue was good. I like to be able to laugh while renegade faeries are trying to steal the faerie princess away from the evil faerie king who doesn’t really want the princess – just her mother.

I think I might have just given away the whole book. Oops. Read it anyway, it’s fun. I stayed up long after midnight to finish it last night.

Or maybe I’m just a wee bit prejudice since Zara is a Charleston girl.

You’re a Horrible Person….

I’m not sure what led us to check out You’re a Horrible Person But I Like You. Oh who am I kidding, it was the totally the name – and the pretty orange cover. The two best things about the book. Even the inclusion of brilliant people like Sarah Vowell and Harold Ramis couldn’t turn this funny advice book into a funny advice book.

Skip it.

The Lost Sister

I have no idea how The Lost Sister came to be on our bookshelf. It looks too new to have been picked up at a used bookstore or used booksale but it also doesn’t look like a book I’d have just picked up off the shelf at full price. Could it have been a free review copy that I somehow forgot I had and never read? Oy, I hope not.

Modern witch tale set in New England. Mean girls – really mean girls. Really, really mean girls. Girls so mean that they tried to kill a girl during a hazing ritual (not that all of the girls participating in the hazing ritual knew that death was the real goal, not just pain and humiliation…) Astral projection, dream hopping, sisters who grew up thinking they were cousins, boyfriend/girlfriend problems… everything a good teen mean girl witch book should have.

It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great. I enjoyed it and if there’s a sequel (which it feels like there should be) I’d probably read it eventually.  I think I’d rather read about Cordelia and Maddy’s parents/grandparents than about Cordelia and Maddy again. Tess and Sophie seem really interesting. Abigail and Rebecca along with the evil Kiki. Feels like a much more interesting story, to me.
