Daily Dose of Done

This little blog was started for weird reasons.  It evolved into something I never intended it to evolve into.  After that, it DEvolved into something that wasn’t even ME.  And now, now it’s just floating along doing not much of anything.

So, time for some changes.

First change – no more boring and incredibly SEO helpful titles.  From there, the sky’s the limit.  OK it isn’t, because mean people suck and I’m too busy for the sky anyway.   But yea, stuff will change and some stuff will stay the same.  I’m not sure which stuff is which but I’ll keep you posted, k?

Crocodile Soup

Crocodile Soup is a weird lesbian coming of age sort of tale. I didn’t find it as weird as weird as TW did, which makes me wonder. Am I weird because it made sense to me – or is TW weird because it didn’t make sense to her?

Dysfunctional family, of course. Gert and Frank are twins. Both have some serious emotional issues, though Frank’s are just a wee bit more serious than Gert’s (and Gert’s may be more related to the dysfunctional family and her twin brother’s issues than anything else). They live in a haunted historical home. The ghost, of course, is a poet. A woman poet. A lesbian woman poet. And she drives Gert a little more nuts than her family is already driving her.

Interesting. And yes, a little weird, but not THAT weird.

Daily Dose of Kids and Construction

The house next door is getting an addition.  I thought at first it was going to be a swimming pool.  Then I thought it was going to be a fence (they are one of the few houses without a fence).  But then construction got going and no, it’s an addition.  Which doesn’t make sense to us because the people are old, there don’t seem to be many people who live in the house, and the house is already very large.  (And no, we’ve never met them even though we have lived here for 5 years.  Oh except Chris who met the old dude when he fell on the sidewalk and could not get up.  Chris helped him up and since then the dude rides a motorized scooter around.)

So that construction.  It is bugging the big kids.

Michelle ranted last week that there should be laws preventing construction noises at 7am when she is trying to get another half hour of sleep before school.  She ranted and ranted.  I reassured her that it wouldn’t take long because they got a TON done and it looked like it just needed a roof and some finishing on the outside and then surely the inside construction would not wake her.

This week, they are in fact working on the roof.  And now Chris is disgusted.  Not with the noise of the hammers and stuff but with the ridiculous chatter of the construction workers.  His room is right next to the construction site and apparently these men talk about the DUMBEST stuff.  And he simply cannot take listening to their idiocy any longer.  So he left to hang out with people who don’t talk about dumb stuff.

I’m finding the whole construction thing sort of amusing simply because of the angst it is causing the big kids.  Too loud when she’s trying to sleep – ha.  Dumb conversations – ha.  Payback in the form of construction workers.  Who knew?

Daily Dose of TV Angst

I now watch three television shows a week.  Survivor is not even worth blogging about, at this point.  So let us just ignore that one for now, ok?  Instead, I’m going to rant about two of the best shows on TV.  Well one of them USED to be one of the best shows on TV, sigh.

Gilmore Girls post Palladinos is not great.  It wasn’t great last year with Palladino but darn it, I want GREAT.  I hate, hate, HATE Christopher and Lorelai.  Actually I just plain hate Christopher.  And that whole Gigi/Sherry thing was idiotic.  The only good thing about last night’s Chris/Lor relationship was Emily calling them derelicts.  That was awesome.  The rest, it stinks and Emily is awesome without the stink that is Lorelai and Chris in a relationship.  And, I was stupid enough to look at the fall sweeps spoilers and if the GG rumors are true I may destroy my television when it happens.  Suckage – pure suckage.  (I did, enjoy picklegate and I did enjoy Rory/Logan – even the whining at the end by Rory and Logan’s manipulation of her whining.  It’s excellent and will lead to a nice little end to their relationship – which, I’m so totally looking forward to. That is what’s going to happen, right?)

Now about Dexter.  I loved the books.  I’ve loved the television.  But I was sorely disappointed in last night’s serious deviations from the book.  Small deviations, I dig.  I understand.  I fully support.  But last night, one was particularly troubling.  The dog incident.  That is not what happened in the book.  I won’t tell you what did happen in the book, in case the television folks decide to add that element in somewhere later – which they totally should do.   I’ve been really impressed with the lack of changes and if there are going to be more, I’m going to be seriously unhappy…. Dexter, the book, is awesome and it makes great TV.  Don’t screw with that, people.  Stick to the BOOK.

OK I’m done angsting for the day.  Back to work!

Daily Dose of Stuff

Here are some recent topics of discussion around our house, in no particular order:

1) I saw the Virgin Mary in our neighbor’s window.  TW saw it too so I’m not crazy.
2) Jane Wyatt is dead but Joni Mitchell is not.
3) Glen Close is too old to play Marie Antoinette.
4) Did we get hit by the same truck (aka sassymonkey) or were there two different trucks?
5) Upgrading IE.
6) Ponytails.
7) The weather – it’s cold today, after being surprisingly warm, and getting colder.  We are going to freeze tomorrow.
8)  There is such a thing as too many tomatoes.
9) Who owns that blue car and why does he pull in there all of the time and then pull out again?
10) It’s hard to tell the difference between TV and video games, just by the sound.

The Masque of the Black Tulip

Woohooo, The Masque of the Black Tulip is full of women spies! Gotta love that. It is also just as excellent as the Secret History of the Pink Carnation.

I thought I would be disappointed that there was not more about Richard and Amy and Jane but I wasn’t. Miles and Henrietta and the rest of the Londoners held their own and then some. I might actually have liked this one more than the Pink Carnation – does that ever happen with sequels?

The Things That Matter

The Things That Matter was more interesting than I thought it would be. The segments I enjoyed least were the Middlemarch and Between the Acts pieces. Middlemarch because I haven’t read it in more than 25 years and only barely remember it. Between the Acts because I have not read it at all. It did make me want to re-read Wuthering Heights, which is not something I’ve ever felt the desire to do. And also Mrs Dalloway but that’s not unusual since I often think I want to re-read Mrs Dalloway.

Analyzing novels with an eye to the various “stages of life” was interesting. I didn’t always agree, but I did find all of the author’s ideas interesting.

I Love Used Books

p1010001_2.jpg
We’ve just returned from a visit to the Fall Friends of the Library sale. It wasn’t very crowded, which is good in some ways and not so good in others. It was, however, very hot and very loud. Since neither TW or I are feeling well (thank you sassymonkey) neither of us were interested in spending the traditional hour er two hours and instead we were in and out in less than 30 minutes. Maybe we’ll go back tomorrow? Or maybe we’ll go back on 1/2 price day or 10 cent day. Surely we’ll be feeling better soon, won’t we?

You can see the books we bought in the photo (click to make it bigger). 26 books for $27 and of course the change went into the charity jar (they’re raising money this year for a children’s library that was flooded). TW bought a lot of “yellow” and I bought a good bit of “orange”.
