I surprised Michelle and TW with a little detour trip to South of the Border last weekend. They thought we were flying to Charlotte when we were actually driving (a whaley boy car! Prius) by way of South of the Border. Which really isn’t on the way but it worked, particularly since neither Michelle or TW had ever been there and since both have always wished to go.

southoftheborder-015.jpgIt was surprisingly fun, even if TW was sick and on prednisone. And even if most of the “attractions” were closed. Michelle, in particular, giggled nonstop for several hours on Friday night as we wandered around the neon and souvenirs.

I think we have to go back, hopefully when everything is actually OPEN – whenever that might be.

It’s that time of year again, it’s time for the Friends of the Library Sale! Yea! We were out of town over the weekend so our first trip was today after work. I went armed with a list of Animorphs for RJ and a list of possible poets for Michelle. We spent $24.50, donated $1.50 to whatever worthy cause the FOL folks have decided on (something related to military service folks I think) and we came home with 25 books…

nb3676.jpgHappy Earth Day! I know, I’m a wee bit early but since communities all over the world seem to celebrate on dates other than the official Earth Day, I can do it too. Especially since I’ll be traveling on Earth Day and won’t have time to do a real Earth Day post. Earth balls come in a variety of styles and would look darn cute on a cupcake. cupcake. If trees are your thing, check out model railroad supplies for some trees to top a cupcake. And of course, there are flower rings to encourage folks to get out and plant a garden.

The Story of the Cannibal Woman

Look! A post about a book! A book I was very disappointed with. The Story of the Cannibal Woman has a great title and got some good reviews and I yawned my way through it. (At least I made it through, TW put it down early.) There were lines I really liked, passages where I thought “Hey, this might improve!” but in the end it was disappointing. All of that back and forth, mixed up mess, for this ending? OK. Well. Ho Hum.

Look! A post that isn’t about a book!

I know, you’re in shock aren’t you? Until you find out it’s about a blog! And a woman! If I’m not talking about books, I’m talking about blogs or women or all three! My favorite three things in the world, besides kids and coffee and my hairbrush. But now I have really strayed off topic. I need to write more often about stuff besides books and then this wouldn’t happen.

While you wait for me to find time and energy to write about something besides books (and blogs and women) you should visit Elizabeth at Table for Five. I love Elizabeth! (ha, I say that a lot around here!)

I met Elizabeth (the Table for Five one) at BlogherCon 06 (that was last year for you date challenged people) and I sort of fell in love with her (not like that!) and I’ve been reading her blog ever since.

Elizabeth gave me a nice award ’cause she likes me, and she thinks I rock! (Who doesn’t, though? I did after all just win a homeschool blog award!) She’s also featured today on Mommybloggers! (I love Mommybloggers and the three specific mommy bloggers who run Mommybloggers! I love a lot of people, mostly women – have you noticed that?)

So, go visit Elizabeth. And the mommybloggers. And tell them Denise sent you and you are bored ’cause Denise only writes about books (and blogs and women.)

OK OK it’s another book, I can’t trick you and pretend it isn’t. I like books. I also like cows. Last year was a good year for cows because of The Cartoonist They Call Stik.

You may remember last year I won a cow tshirt that’s been quite popular around here. You’ll also remember that I really wanted a Flamencow tshirt. You’ll be very pleased to know that I bought myself the t-shirt and I won a free 365 Cow Jokes Later book.

Singing With the Top Down

I know, I know – again with the books and nothing in between. My life is like that sometimes. 😉 So, Singing With the Top Down felt a lot like the Anna Casey book but grown up. It also read a lot like a young adult book. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Rescuing hitchhikers and mummies, dealing with slime bag men and doctors, becoming a “family”. Nice story, good solid happy ending. It was fun but not frivolous fun at the expense of orphans or hitchhikers!

Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn

Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn, another Kris Radish, is pure chick lit with a dumb title. Any number of great lines from the book could have been used as the title, too bad something else wasn’t selected. Anyway, back to the pure chick lit – that’s what it was. Nothing really new or unusual about it, unlike the Elegant Gathering of White Snows which all felt new and unusual. Pure chick lit (and as you know if you read my book blogging regularly, I like chick lit.)

Drag King Dreams

Drag King Dreams is a pretty decent follow up to the queer classic Stone Butch Blues. Pretty decent is about as good as I can come up with, particularly since Stone Butch Blues is fantastic.

I am a little tired of the post 9/11 NYC thing and this book was just a little too full of that for me. I understand the point – the police harassment of those from Pakistan, India, Iraq, Iran etc… is very similar to the harassment of “gender queers”. It makes sense and it’s a good point but I’d have enjoyed the book more with just a wee bit less politic thrown in.

The end of the book though, fantastic. The calling out of each person’s “name” while in jail – really good ending.
