I get homesick at some of the weirdest times. Reading The Fixer Upper, set outside of Atlanta, shouldn’t really have made me homesick but it did.
Other than the homesick factor, it was a fun piece of chick lit. I’d love to see the house when it’s finished, it is going to be amazing – the kitchen in particular. 😉
Oh look, another book with a dissatisfying ending. It’s not that I like happy endings, but good grief! The ending of Windless Summer was pretty spectacularly depressing.
The whole book was surprisingly depressing and I found myself dreaming about weird hotel rooms and the number six. I also have no idea why TW insisted that I needed to read this book. It seems an odd book for her to insist on. Must be the autistic kid factor? Or maybe the karma surrounding room six?
RJ and I got into a discussion about the Lisa McMann series and she convinced me that I shouldn’t wait to read more, that I should either read her copy of Fade or grab it from the library. So I did.
RJ was very troubled by Fade. I’m not sure why it was more troubling than Wake. Maybe because Janie figured out what’s going to happen to her because of her dream catching? Or maybe it was the date rape stuff? I don’t know, I haven’t had a chance to ask her. I just enjoyed it and am ready for the next book.
Of all the “powers” one might have, falling into other people’s dreams has got to be one of the most horrible. shudder.
How is it possible that I’ve never read a Rendell book? She’s awfully prolific and it’s certainly the type of book I’d have found myself considering from the shelves.
The Monster in the Box was pretty good. I liked Inspector Wexford. I liked his wife and I liked his friends. I liked the bad guy though it was a very unsatisfying “ending” to that bad guy. Very unsatisfying. Do all of Rendell’s bad guys come to such an unsatisfying demise? I’ll have to check out another one and find out.

I read Parable of the Sower years ago. So long ago that I really had forgotten it, so listening to it on audio was like reading it for the first time.
I’m an Octavia Butler fan and every time I read (or re-read) something she’s written, I become an even bigger fan.

I’m glad I saved it for last. I thought it was more of a look into the Kennedy Christmas and it wasn’t that at all. It was a compilation of Christmas music, poetry, short stories, letters, etc…

I’m not a big fan of short stories but I loved Bloodchild and other stories. No real surprise since I’m an Octavia Butler fan.
Quick, interesting, nice author’s notes after each story. More authors should include such things.
It’s rare that I don’t finish a book, even if I dislike it. I tried, I really tried, to read Four Sisters of Hofei and I just couldn’t do it. It wasn’t that it was non-fiction, it was that it was boring text book style non-fiction. I just didn’t care. I read five chapters plus the intro and that was enough.

Traveling with Pomegranates is part travel book, part mother-daughter exploration, part coming of age book (for young women and older women), part spiritual exploration. At times it seems like it’s a bit too much mix of too many things, but overall – it works.
It’s also a wee bit disconcerting to read Sue Monk Kidd (and her daughter) while listening to Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower. The two books mingle and mix with mixed results.
