Not a very auspicious start for the new year, eh? Four days in and I’ve just now finished the first book — a book I started reading about, oh, a month ago? No big deal — Nellie Taft (the book, not the woman) was a slow read and I’ve been busy doing all the things. My reading rate will pick up and drop off and pick up again. As usual. But, back to Nellie Taft…

I had high hopes for this biography but it was like too many biographies — a bit dull and textbook-like. Too bad since Nellie Taft was pretty darn interesting. Overall, I”m glad I read this one.

The Harlot’s Tale

The second book in the Midwife Mystery series, The Harlot’s Tale was just as awesome — if not more awesome — than the first one. Oh so clever and I found myself chuckling several times. This troubled TW. She says I laughed more during this book than I did reading Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (which is probably true since I errr don’t really find The Bloggess as funny as others do, particularly in large doses.)

Anyway — loved it. I did not see that ending coming. The part about Edward, though I should have since it paves the way for Joseph to be… Joseph. Can’t wait for #3.

The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard St

I really liked The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard St, the book and the character. TW liked the book but not the character. I guess that makes sense. Lillian could be a little unlikeable. Maybe. I just saw her as a flawed human being — flawed in so many ways because of her childhood. I loved the businesswoman Lil — she was awesome. No she wasn’t a nice boss, or a nice woman — so what, sue her (lol), she wasn’t any worse than her male counterparts was she?

The Daring Ladies of Lowell

I hadn’t planned on reading The Daring Ladies of Lowell — too much on my TBR list and not nearly enough time. But, I kept seeing it mentioned on blogs and on reading lists and it’s in high demand at our library so I figured what the heck — if everyone wants to read it, maybe I should make time.

And, since my attention span is crap right now and I can’t seem to get much of anything except work (and housework) done, this seemed look a good read. Something light and easy but not middle grade fiction.

It was pretty darn good. Surprisngly so. I liked Lovey and I liked Alice. I even liked most of the Fiskes.

The Invention of Wings

I very much enjoyed Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings. We need more books, fiction or otherwise, about the Grimké sisters, Sarah and Angelina.

*Note: Apparently this was a damn Oprah book pick and if you buy a Kindle copy, you might find Oprah’s notes IN THE BOOK. That… stinks. If you’re thinking about buying this, avoid the kindle copy since there are blue notes in the text — that’s Oprah sticking her two cents in. Blech. I’m very glad I read a library copy that did not have Oprah’s notes in it, just the dumb Oprah book selection banner on the front. Blech. Oprah, stay out of people’s darn books!

Redefining Girly

I know you’re shocked that I liked Redefining Girly. Hah.

I didn’t love it, but it was good — particularly for those who are just beginning to sort out the whole marketing of gender issue. It’s probably best for those with young children (or no children at all) — those with older kids (tweens/teens) are going to find the recommendations too young, too basic, and not quite on the mark, particularly if they haven’t already been raising their children to question gender stereotypes.
