He Can Sleep Through Anything

Chris is asleep on the couch. He’s been asleep on the couch for quite some time.

Three feet from the end of the couch is the bird – who screams every few minutes just because she can.

Right next to the bird is TW who has run the sewing machine for hours, while he slept.

Through the open doorway, RJ has been baking. And she is not a quiet baker.

TW called the three small children from dinner, while standing right behind the couch he is sleeping on.

I called him for dinner while standing behind the couch.

He kept sleeping.

Five of us ate dinner, at the table right behind the couch. We talked about the tofu tacos TW made.

The oven timer went off, RJ and Elly jumped up to deal with peanut butter blossoms.

The boy slept on.

I cleaned the kitchen and started the dishwasher, which causes the bird to scream  more frequently. (it’s the sound of running water that does it.)

RJ is back in the kitchen with her cookies – every now and then she claps. Or sings. Or yells loudly.

We talked about unhappiness – why so many people in her life seem to be unhappy. Why she might feel not so happy herself. It’s a mystery. Everyone should be happy. There’s much to be happy about.

TW sews on.

Chris sleeps on.

TW uses the sodastream to make fizzy water.  Is there a louder machine than the sodastream? No, there is not.

I called RJ into the office to give her a book that I picked up for her at the library. She rambles happily about the awesome book (though this book  suggests she no longer needs to say awesome) from the kitchen – loudly.

I called Elly down, from right behind the couch, to hand her graphic novels that I picked up at the library. She squealed with joy and ran noisily up the metal staircase.

I stopped to talk to TW about her quilt problem.

I carried books into the living room to set next to TW’s mother’s chair.

The boy snores a bit louder.

I grabbed my iPhone and took a photo – with a flash.

He’s still sleeping.

There goes the sodastream again… yep, he’s still sleeping.

I Quit.

It’s day 7 of NaBloPoMo and I’m officially calling it quits – even though this post means I’ll still have a post every day for the month, lol. Weird to write a post saying you’re quitting Nablo when the post itself keeps you in the game but there you have it.

I just don’t have the time or the energy to push myself to write a blog post every day and enjoy it. Or have it mean something (to me or to the six people still reading this blog.)

At some point I have to be realistic and draw the lines that need to be drawn.

This… it’s my line.

I just can’t do NaBloPoMo right now and still do all of the other things that I have to do – or want to do.  Something has to give. And this is it.  I guess I knew I’d never manage it before we ever got started. Maybe that’s why I didn’t add myself to the blogroll.

Now excuse me while I go lay in bed with my book, and TW – and talk about time capsule houses or Armenia or outlaws of the wild west.

Siunik Armenian Grill

We have been mourning the loss of Fredhot’s & Fries for quite some time… and when we saw the signs saying a new restaurant was going to open in that spot, we weren’t super enthusiastic. We miss our fredhots. When the signs got an update telling us that an Armenian grill was opening there, we got a little more interested. An Armenian grill? What’s that? And will people go to such a thing in whitebread Glenview? Hmmm.

The Siunik Armenian Grill has been open now for a few weeks and we’ve all peered inside and quietly wondered about it as we drove by. But nobody ever really said – let’s stop there.

Today, was TW’s mom’s 75th birthday. We went to Elly’s circus performance and planned to go out for birthday dinner – but where were we going to go for birthday dinner. The choices were uninspiring (to me) because nobody really offered up any ideas. The only suggestion was Booby’s (from Elly) and while we all do like Booby’s… I just wasn’t in to it. That’s a long drive from Evanston on a school night after one of the longest, most stressful weekends in a long time – when some of us are sick (or flaring… yea, you know who I’m talking about…)

So I quietly suggested we try the Armenian grill. TW was game but we weren’t sure they’d be open for dinner on a Sunday night in whitebread Glenview. I called and checked the hours – bingo, they were going to be open.

So we stopped.

As everyone on Yelp has already said, the owner is super nice and helpful. The other folks on staff were equally nice and helpful. They kept offering us more food, though our table was covered with food. Elly ate pretty much every bite of her steak wrap. RJ did eat every bite of her veggie plate. None of the rest of us could completely finish our plates, though TW’s mom ate the rest of Prine J’s eggplant because there’s one thing we don’t get a lot of here – eggplant (we don’t allow eggplant in the house – long story.)

The food was excellent. I think we might all have our favorites. Prince J really liked the buckwheat pilaf but didn’t love the eggplant. Everyone who ordered the steak raved about it. RJ enjoyed whatever sauce Prince J got (it wasn’t the spicy… it was something else) and dipped her bread in it until it was gone. I really liked the onion sumac and the hummus was excellent as was the cabbage salad.

(Oh, if you’re wondering – the prices are excellent. Steak wrap is $6.90, steak plate is 8.90 (the most expensive items on the menu, by the way.)

We’re still mourning the loss of Fredhots but Siunik is fabulous – we’ll be back.

I Am Creating Jobs For USA — Are YOU?

We went to Starbucks this morning, it is Wednesday after all. I was extra excited about going because I knew I was going to be helping to create jobs for the USA. I knew this not just because I saw a press blurb about it last week but also because I sat in on a conference call with Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz (and led by BlogHer Co-Founder, Lisa Stone).

I always make small contributions to whatever charitable program Starbucks is promoting in their stores. It’s what I do. Starbucks gives me my Quad Grande Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato three days a week (and on holidays and special occasions) and I support causes they ask me to support. It’s the least I can do, really. And I have found that every single cause Starbucks has promoted has been one that I’d be happy to support.

HIV, Fresh Water, Literacy. Yep, Yep, Yep.

Creating Jobs for USA. DEFINITELY.

So I bought ten wristbands this morning and chatted about the program with my baristas who thought it was extra cool that I’d been in a conference call with Howard, heh.

Image001

Those ten wristbands cost $50. That’s less than I spend at Starbucks in two weeks (less than I spend at Starbucks in one day if all of the kids are home on a coffee day.) That $50 goes an awful long way:

          Every $5 = $35

          $50 x $35 = $1,750

It takes $20,000 to create (and sustain) one new job. My contribution HELPED and yours can too.

You don’t have to buy 10. Just buy one if that’s all you can afford or all you choose to give. That’s one quad grande nonfat caramel macchiato… it’s worth it.

(If you’re a small business owner or considering starting a small business – you should consider applying for a loan at Opportunity Finance, which is where the funds being raised by Creating Jobs for USA are going.)

What Is Your Favorite Part About Writing

Hah.

Who has time to write?

That’s today’s prompt, the first prompt for NaBloPoMo. I literally laughed out loud when I read it. And then I cursed. A lot.

Awhile back, I tossed out the idea, on Joy’s blog, that maybe I don’t blog anymore because I’m too busy reading other people’s blogs and helping other people blog to actually do it myself. And that maybe, just maybe, those bloggers have stolen my words.

Stolen as in – what’s left to say? I mean really?

I read thousands of posts everyday and some of them are wickedly good.  I shake my head in agreement. I smile in recognition. I sit with my mouth hanging open in awe.

What really is there left for me to say, at the end of the day, that has not already been said?

The truth is – I’m not sure I know what I used to like best about writing. I just don’t have the time to do it, much less think about it.

And yes that makes me a little sad.

Let’s see what happens this month. Will I really write anything at all?
