#Readathon Closing Survey

I thought about posting my closing survey last night when I decided to call it a night. But that would have meant getting the dogs wound up and asking to go back outside and ain’t nobody want to chase a dog around the yard at 11 p.m. after having just chased one around the yard at 10:30 p.m.. So here I am this morning.

How would you assess your reading overall?

Considering I haven’t finished a book in forever (which isn’t really true, I’ve read a bunch of curriculum books and elementary education books but I’m not really counting most of those) I’m pretty pleased with my reading. I’m pretty sure I’ll even finish the book that I got halfway through last night.

Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it?

I had no strategy. Or if I did, it didn’t look anything like my previous #readathon strategies. I just read what I thought I could finish and I did it. (Though honestly, it was touch and go there for a minute with one of the books.)

What was your favorite snack?

I don’t think I had a favorite snack this year. That’s what happens when you don’t buy anything really special for #readathon snacking.

Wanna volunteer for our next event?

I will if it doesn’t conflict with other work/family stuff.

Total pages: 600
Three books complete, one in progress.

#Readathon: Mid-Event Survey

I feel like I often skip the mid-event surveys? I certainly don’t have these questions memorized the way I do the intro survey questions. lol

1. What are you reading right now?

I just finished My Halal Kitchen and I think I’m going to read The Midwife and the Assassin

2. How many books have you read so far?

I have finished 3 (one I’d started before #readathon began… I’m just shy of 500 pages down.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Probably The Midwife and the Assassin. I think it’s the final book in a series I started years ago (and often read during #readathon, I think…) and it’s been on my bedside table for three months.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

I had to run to the pharmacy and the vet to pick up meds for everyone – and then I had to do some work that I wasn’t planning to do. I also took a two hour nap – I have a bit of a cold and October has been stressful. The nap was good for me, that’s for sure.

I had intended to listen to an audio book when I ran my errands but it apparently hadn’t finished downloading when I left the house so I shrugged it off and was gone less than an hour.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

Nothing ever surprises me about #Readathon They’re always just a little different.

My Halal Kitchen

I really enjoyed reading the intro and all of the information about Halal cooking and Halal versions of different cuisines. That part of My Halal Kitchen was really interesting. The recipes, however, were a little boring. I mean, if you wanted to eat Halal, then I’d recommend this cookbook. I was just looking for recipes that seemed unusual, different, surprising, or like they’d be exceptionally tasty – but none really did. Standard recipes and common sense substitutions.

How to Make Books

I finished a book. During Readathon! Granted I’ve been reading it so long that it’s auto-renewed three times and has to go back to the library next week but still… I finished a book. A good book. A book that I thought would be silly since I know a good bit about making books. Turns out, How to Make Books is a great book and would be a great resource for people who want to make books of all kinds. I’d like to own it, really. I wonder if Pippin and Squish and Evergreen want to learn to make books… then I could justify buying it. In hardback because the binding is awesome. (As a book about making books should be.)

#Readathon Opening Survey

I’m right at 30 minutes late, which isn’t bad – all things considered…

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Still here in Keystone Heights, of course.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
Any of them! I’ve read so little this year that finishing any book is going to be amazing.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
I went really low-key this year because of TW’s surgery. She doesn’t really want food and I didn’t want to spend a lot of time or money on food she won’t eat. I don’t even think I bought anything new or different unless you count some new brand of pre-made eggrolls I found in the deli section.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
I used to read a lot, now I read very little. I would love to get back to reading a lot.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

We’re spending most of the day reading in my mil’s former bedroom as TW recovers from surgery. That’s different. Very different. There will be fewer baths because baths are a no-no post-surgery. There will be more napping because of the surgery recovery. Also, I have a bit of a cold so again with the napping. (I should count and see how many readathons I’ve done over the years. A LOT.

Happy readathon, everyone.

Tess of the Road

Every now and then, for years, TW has asked me if there are any more Seraphina books.. I dutifully look, even though there just never are any… and suddenly, there was! It’s not really a Seraphina book, but it’s a book about one of Seraphina’s sister. Turns out, Tess of the Road is the 2018 Cybils YA Speculative Fiction winner.

We listened to it on audio, as we did the Seraphina books, and liked it a lot, maybe more than I liked the Seraphina books. I hope there’s a sequel.

Competence

We got lucky and TW found the third book in The Custard Protocal, Competence on the shelf at the library. I read most of it during #Readathon but couldn’t quite manage the last hour it would have taken me to finish it last night. I think this series has grown into itself, after what felt like a bit of a rough start. (Or maybe I just missed the original Soulless characters so much that it took me some time to grow into the series?) The South American “vampires” were awesome as was Percy’s solution for their problem.

Great #Readathon book, great addition to the series.

#Readathon: One Book Down

We’re what, five hours into the #readathon and I just finished my first book. A List of Cages – heartbreaking and frustrating and horrible and wonderful all at the same time.

I had powdered sugar donuts for breakfast, a brownie for a pre-lunch snack, and then a couple of Publix tenders for lunch. I’m starting my next book and opened a bottle of Green Machine and have some Bordeaux cookies calling my name. (TW finished a book and then started a nap, lol.)
