Mystery

No Reservations Required

I was right, I do like the Sophie Greenway mysteries better than the Jane Lawless mysteries. I like Sophie better than Jane, which is too darn bad. Jane is so darn wishy washy compared to Sophie.

No Reservations Required is a culinary mystery in more than just name only and that’s what I like about Ellen Hart – her mysteries are never just one mystery, there’s always a secondary mystery to solve along with the main crime. They’re rarely complicated but they’re always interesting and amusing. And for you gay folk who would stick with Jane just for some GLBT principles, Sophie’s son is gay and many of the characters are gay and Jane’s father occasionally makes an appearance as a lawyer for some troubled soul. So don’t feel bad if you switch allegiance to Sophie.

The Iron Girl

I guess it isn’t all Jane Lawless, after all. I didn’t love The Iron Girl but I sure liked it more than Stage Fright. How many women has Jane Lawless been through? She has bedded more women than, errrr, well a lot of women.

I think I like the Sophie Greenway mysteries better than the Jane Lawless mysteries – which is too bad since Sophie isn’t a dyke and it’s odd too because all of the food is just not “me”. But there you have it, I’m a contradiction.

Kate Delafield

Sigh. Detective Delafield, you were not at your best in Hancock Park. Are you showing your age? Or is it Katherine Forrest who is showing hers? I can’t decide. All I know is that I don’t like it and I hope we see improvements with the next Kate Delafield mystery.

The good detective is a drinker and should definitely get that under control. I’m all for that. She’s also the kind of dyke who doesn’t wander around the sisterhood with a rainbow bumper sticker attending empowerment seminars and that should not change at all. Leave the woman alone. Let her do her job and go home to a nice g/f at the end of a hard day. Or let her do her job and go home with a screwed up lesbian relationship at the end of the day. But quit beating her up about not being an active participant in the community. That’s BS and Katherine Forrest should really know better, shouldn’t she?

Yes, she should.

The Devil’s Feather

I love Minette Walters. After reading Devil’s Feather I am tempted to ignore Inheritance of Loss a bit longer and read another Walters that is calling me from the “to be read” shelf. But I won’t, I’ll read Inheritance now and then get back to Walters!

I think TW said that The Devil’s Feather was boring. I’m not sure why she found it boring. The initial area of the book, the foreshadowing so to speak, was a little slow – but once the bad guy got really bad, it was anything BUT boring.

I liked both Connie and Jess quite a bit. I disliked Dr Peter from start to finish but that’s ok – which says something about Minette Walters… that I can dislike a major character, one who has solid relationships with the two main characters that I love, and not hold it against the author – that never happens.

(Terrorism abounds in this book. Rape, torture – it’s pretty ugly. If you’ve got personal “triggers”, this may not be the book for you.)

The Secret History of the Pink Carnation

I can’t for the life of me figure out why our library does not have a copy of The Secret History of the Pink Carnation. I’ve been checking once a month for at least a year. I finally got tired of checking and requested it via interlibrary loan. Two days later, I had the book in my hand. Why I waited so long to go that route is beyond me. The moment I finished it, I went to the ILL form and requested the sequel.
The Pink Carnation was a fun read, quick and compelling read, and definitely chick lit. But really excellent chick lit. Good characters, good dialogue, good sex scenes. Heh. Happy ending, too. Excellent in every way.

Drive

Drive was a quirky little mystery. Was it really a mystery though? There wasn’t really a whodunit sort of thing, we knew who did it. We knew why. Bad things happen when you drive the get away car for robbers and mob types. Whatever it was, it was quirky. I love a hero who is really a bad guy a la Dexter!

You should read this and tell me what you think.

Louise Welsh

The Bullet Trick has clinched it. Louise Welsh is awesome. I’ve now read all of her books and loved every single one of them.

This one is about a magician or a conjurer, if you prefer. How about an illusionist, I like that better. He’s also got a way of landing himself into difficult situations.

The Bullet Trick had a wee bit less sex but the book was still sexy. Rather than primary gay characters there were secondary gay characters and some gay jokes.

Loved the book. Love Louise Welsh.

The Sculptress!

I love book blogs. Without book blogs I would not have been introduced to tons of great books. Books like The Sculptress! Awesome. If only I could remember, or easy find, the book blog where I heard about The Sculptress. But it’s hard and I’m tired so I have given up for awhile. Whoever you are, if you are reading this and you blogged about Minette Walters sometime in the last six months – THANK YOU.

Did Olive do it or didn’t she? Does it matter?
