Art of Modern Rock: Mini Poster Girls

Art of Modern Rock: Mini Poster Girls was not quite an impulse purchase but I didn’t go to Women and Children with the intention of buying it. I saw it, I remembered giving someone (The half child?) a book of rock posters that was really cool and as I flipped through it, I realized this was the “Perfect for Michelle” version of that book. And it is.

American Born Chinese

I am not a huge graphic novel fan but I do appreciate them because they are quick reads. I read American Born Chinese in less than an hour. Liz read it last weekend – twice. It was good. I liked the lesson of the monkey king, so did Liz.

But then again, Liz IS a huge graphic novel fan. And that’s one of the reasons why I selected the Graphic Novel project from DonorsChoose. There’s a lot of value in getting kids hooked on a story through graphic novels. Not all kids are immediate readers. Some kids are visual. And, I have to say, having some visuals when trying to get kids to read Red Badge of Courage is probably a damn good idea. Go donate $1 to the project (or more if you can) – Red Badge of Courage is worth reading and if it takes some graphic novels to teach the story, then I can support that – can’t you?

Wonder Woman!

I have wanted to read Jodi Picoult’s Wonder Woman for ages but kept forgetting to reserve it at the library. Something reminded me awhile back, I did it, and I finally made time to read it.

Loved it.

I wasn’t a huge Wonder Woman fan as a kid, I liked her but I really preferred the villains or a bit of Fantastic Four. Jodi Picoult might have just made me a Wonder Woman fan for life. What did her mother say??????? And who wrote the comic after Jodi’s? I need to find out – right now!

Robot Dreams

I picked up Robot Dreams from the library because I saw it was a finalist for a Cybil in the graphic novel category – and Liz likes graphic novels.

I read it this morning and it’s cute but also sad! It’s like the young adult “problem” novel but graphic and for little kids. Sniff, sniff. Lost friends. Sniff, sniff.

Liz just read it and she kept saying “awe” and “awe” and “aweeeee”. She thought the art was good and it was a little sad but it had a happy ending. She liked the robot getting a new home and turning into a radio.

Fan Boy and Goth Girl

I ran upstairs and stole the audio version of The Astonishing Adventures of Fan Boy and Goth Girl from Prince J’s room since he wasn’t here to listen to it (though his cd player was coming on every afternoon and playing disc 2 over and over and over again.)

I’m so glad I trudged the stairs and braved the messy room to get it. Fantastic YA. Really great story. Great characters. About 10xs better than King Dork, (and there are an awful lot of similarities between the two stories.)

Please tell me there will be a sequel.

A Banned Book: Fun Home

I don’t really DO graphic novels (or comics). They just aren’t my thing, I know that and I avoid them. But when I heard Fun Home was being challenged and banned, I decided to give it a try. I do like Dykes to Watch Out For, in small doses, so I had high hopes for Fun Home.

High hopes indeed. Fun Home is excellent. And it totally needed to be a graphic novel instead of just a written word piece. What a family, what a story, what a terrific job Bechdel did telling her story.
