I have decided a couple of things, now that I’ve finished The Gathering.
First, I rarely like Irish novels. In fact I like them so rarely that I think I should stop reading them.
Second, Booker Prize winners are highly over-rated and I should stop reading those, too.
I didn’t care about any of these characters. At. All. I didn’t understand any of these characters. At. All.
Boring, boring, boring. A lot of pretty words combined in such a way as to bore me to tears for a full week.
Someone please remind me of this next year when I’m reading the Booker short list.
See? You DO read boring books.
🙂
I have a serious question: once you realize that a book is boring, why do you finish it?
Am I *really* allowed to remind you? Or when I remind you will you just tell me to shut it? 😉
I read this one too with the same feelings about it. Meh. I finished it out of pure force of will (which didn’t positively impact my opinion of the book once it was over). 🙂
I understand having to read a book until the end. I am always hoping for some form of justification for my dedication….it usually doesn’t work out for me. Not long ago I finished Truth and Beauty, and was interested in the story of Lucy Grealy. I then chose to read her Autobiography of a Face, and am having a hard time. It’s not that it is unpleasant or badly written, on the contrary. It just seems that I seldom find that book that causes me to stay up until 4 in the morning simply because I cannot imagine putting it down.
Thanks for the heads up!
Oh Lord…our book club read this one and I was ready to poke myself in the eye with a fork just to ease the boredom. I’m with you Denise…NO MORE!
