Daily Dose of Stuff – IKEA

Michelle’s IKEA furniture has arrived.  The wrong color.  In fact two wrong colors.  But, she’s over it and has decided that this is ok, maybe better than the original choice since her walls are so dark.  She and the half child and one of their friends put the dresser together in about 15 minutes.  I was impressed.  (Not that I’ve seen it, but impressed that it was done so quickly)  The half child and friend have left for band practice and Michelle is putting together nightstand number 1 – alone.  I’m waiting for the "mommmmmm, help meeeeee" from the top of the stairs…

***Update – within about 3 minutes she was at the door asking for help. We put together a MALM nightstand and the IVAR TV Stand. I wanted to do the second MALM nightstand but she was done for the night. Tomorrow leaves the MALM bed, the other nightstand and the NORREBO shelf unit. You can see the first round of photos here. The boys were a little weird. 1/2 child whispering IKEA magic words into the friend’s ear? Hmmm

  1. I’m not sure you can call it “reading”. There are no real words on IKEA instructions. But because IKEA furniture is notorious for being difficult to put together, I have been drilling them for a month about paying attention to instructions. They definitely did.

The 1/2 child has a knack for assembling furniture. He’s just really really good at it. And one of the reasons why we keep him around.

I’m anxious for Michelle to wake up so I can see what progress they made last night after I went to bed. Surely she’ll be awake soon… the little kids aren’t exactly being quiet up there.

  2. giggle. Ikea instructions have a special place in technical writing classes. Had I stuck around Montreal long enough to take the International Tech Writing class I would have studied Ikea. Once you get used to Ikea instructions they aren’t too bad. I did eventually stop putting things together backwards.

Sadly Ikea instructions are better than the ones that came with my desk chair.

  3. All of the furniture is officially together – sort of. The bed assembly at 3am didn’t go well. Well it did but he left out a key step that will have to be done when he gets back here later this afternoon.

And today, the NORREBO construction had issues – he got cocky and didn’t read the directions. He used the long screw in a bad spot and put it through the wood. Not a huge problem because it’s not in a support area or visible because it is on the bottom. He used short screws somewhere where he should have used long ones and so the top isn’t secure because he ran out of long screws (or maybe it is the other way around??). They’ll have to resolve that issue this afternoon as well.

The other nightstand needs to be connected to the bed too – and the bigger issue is that the various mattresses in the house don’t fit the bed so I have to track down one that does fit, lol.

She’s up there now attempting to organize that disaster area….

All in all – a success. She’s happy and I’m happy – or I will be once she gets everything cleaned up and gets the paint off of her floor. She needs a painter’s mat or something up there. Do they make attractive painter’s mats? Or should she just make one?

  4. LOL, she should definately just make an attractive painter’s cloth….they don’t exist otherwise…3am furniture assembly? sounds just about right
