Jury Duty: Christopher Style

A couple of months ago, when Chris still lived here, I checked the mail and discovered a jury duty selection card. For Christopher. I was initially annoyed by this. I have never been called for jury duty and the boy is not yet 21 and has gotten his first summons? NOT fair. Then, I was excited because how cool is it to be called for jury duty? In my opinion, pretty cool.

Chris came home from wherever it was he had been, or maybe it was a couple of days later – I’m bad about telling people they have mail – and I gave him the card. He was not amused, to put it mildly.

He ranted about this all evening long. “Why should he have to go to jury duty when the system doesn’t work?” “Why should he have to go to jury duty when the system judges him harshly based on how he looks?” “Why should he have to go to jury duty when no lawyer is going to want him on a jury?” “Why should he have to go to jury duty and miss work and miss getting paid?” “It’s our anniversary, we had plans!” “It’s the week after we move, I’ll be too busy!”

On and on and on he went. TW and I both attempted to get him enthusiastic about this, without any luck. On and on he whined. Until I could not take it any longer. I used “The Denise Voice” and told him to adjust his attitude NOW. And I didn’t hear another word about it.

A couple of days before he was suppose to appear at the courthouse, I reminded him about it and he said he had taken the time off work and he’d be there. And, he was actually going in search of “appropriate clothing” right now (apparently his clothes were still at A’s mother’s house.)

On the day of jury duty, he called me…. disappointed because he had not been selected to sit on the trial. He had apparently begun to look forward to it and he found the whole process interesting. One of his former high school teachers had been called and he enjoyed chatting with him while they waited (nice that it was a teacher the boy actually liked since those have been few and far between since the good ole Howard Hawks days.) He was dismissed because the defense lawyer asked him if it would be a financial hardship for him to be on the jury, and miss work all week. Chris admitted that it would be, particularly since he had missed the entire week before because of his move. So, they nicely thanked him for his time and dismissed him.

The kid actually said “I hope they call me again in a few years, I’d like to do it again. You were right.”

Duh. I am always right.

The Phone Call: Another Chris Story

Last night, around 9:15, the phone rang. I was laying in bed, watching the LOGO/HRC debate on my laptop (I changed my mind and decided to turn it on and just sit on my email instead of really working.) I answered the phone, only half listening because Edwards had just been asked what he would do if someone on his staff came out as TG… Chris was on the phone.

M: Hey, how’s it going.
C: Fine, how are you?
M: Not bad.
C: Good
Silence
M: What’s up? How’s the storm over there?
C: That’s why I called, we were at the movie and when we came out everything was flooded. And the storm is bad.
M: Yep, the lightning is crazy.
C: Yea, so I was just calling to check in and see if everything was ok over there.
Silence
M: (stifling a laugh, mouth hanging open, completely missing Edwards’ response to the question) We’re fine, everything ok there? You’ve got electricity still?
C: Oh yea, we’re fine. No problem.
M: OK good. Stay home and don’t drive.
C: Oh we won’t, (A says Hi).
M: (Hi A) OK I’m gonna hang up and finish watching the queer LOGO debate now.
C: OK talk to you later.

The boy called to check on us? WTF is that about? Crazy. Weird. Twilight Zone like.

Fine Charleston Dining

We made a very quick trip up to Charleston this weekend. Our biggest issue, as always, was where to eat. Charleston obviously has some excellent restaurants and we even like some of them but we tend to avoid those normally recommended in travel guides and travel blogs. We like things that are a little different or a little more laid back.

Since we were in the West Ashley/Downtown area I wanted to stay in that area. Driving into North Charleston or Summerville was really not something I wanted to do just to eat. So, I looked at the Charleston City Paper and TW read the hotel travel guide, I picked a couple and called Jenn and Michelle to find out what they wanted – plate food, not pizza. So, we hit The Triangle for dinner on Friday night. Awesome. The fried avocado rolls were, well, the defy explanation. Next time I go, I might just order a plate of those as my meal rather than having to share with the table! The spinach/avocado dip was also good and the main courses were as well. (TW got a bread pudding to go and was not as pleased with that – so if you like bread pudding, you might want to skip that one)

While TW was reading the hotel magazine she noticed Cereality had come to Charleston! The magazine said it was opening in mid-June. The company’s website still had it listed as “check back for grand opening”. Since we had really enjoyed the Cereal Bowl version in Miami last year with the little kids we thought we’d take the big girls to this one – so I called on Saturday to find out what time they opened. The young woman who answered the phone was unsure and had to ask – 10am, she said. So, we arranged to meet the girls there at 10 before they headed to the beach and we headed home.

As TW were standing outside waiting for the girls and pondering the menu, a gentleman from inside came over to welcome us to “the first 15 minutes of the first day” – huh? We had no idea we had arrived for the grand opening. What luck! The girls arrived, we all pondered the options and ordered. Fun! Pop Rocks in Michelle’s cereal were a huge hit. She and Michelle plotted all sorts of combos, just like the little kids did after we took them to The Cereal Bowl.

We enjoyed the communal tables, it’s a little loud and I really hope they turn the music down just a little bit so we can enjoy the cartoons playing on the TV and the conversation a bit more. Other than that, it was a hit with all of us today. And I’m pretty sure it will be a regular breakfast stop for us on our frequent trips to Charleston.

A Pogo Stick is the Perfect Welcome Mat

A few years ago, RJ asked Santa for a pogo stick. Santa, being the obliging sort, provided. RJ pogo’d a little, but she’s not a great pogo-er so she put the stick aside. Prince J tried to pogo. Once. E loves the idea of the pogo stick but she doesn’t have enough weight to make it really pogo the way she would like. Chris and Michelle did some pogo-ing that Christmas. The half-child, who no longer lives with us, also pogo-d and liked it. But, mostly, the pogo stick sits on the front porch right next to the front door – forgotten and unused.

Except…

Except when Michelle and Christopher bring a new friend over to our house. Then, the pogo stick is a much loved, much used toy.

We will hear a car drive up. We will hear older teen and young adult voices outside. And then, we’ll hear a joyful “wowwwwwwwww a pogo stick!!!!” and then much bouncing ensues. And an awful lot of laughter, too.

These older teens and young adults love that pogo stick. It is really a great welcome mat.

Parent Hack

A couple of months ago, something reminded me of a toy my kids had. It was a barn, not a Fisher Price barn, but sort of like that. With little animals. When you put them into their “spaces” they would make animal sounds. I went looking for a picture of one online and of course I couldn’t find one. Then I searched my photo albums looking for a picture of this barn. Nada. How could that be? I took a LOT of pictures of my kids when they were little. I can’t imagine how this farm, which was shuttled all over the world, could not have made its way into at least one photo. But it didn’t.

Then today, I went looking for a picture of the Waterbabies that were popular in the early ’90s. I couldn’t find a good photo of one. So, I went looking through my family photo albums again. I cannot believe I do not have a photo of Michelle with “Chocolate Opal”. There is one photo of her with the “other Opal” but none of “Chocolate Opal”. Insane. That doll was carried with us EVERYWHERE. No pictures.

Learn from me! Take photos of the toys your children loved (and hated). 20 years from now, you’ll want those photos. Or your children will call you up and say “Remember that plane I used to love to ride at grandma’s house?” And you’ll be able to proudly present the child with a photo. (Thank goodness I do have photos of that fabulous toy!)

Harrods and Flamingos with Koan

Heh.  I met Koan, I met Koan! In person! Heh.

Koan met us outside of Harrods and graciously wandered around with the amazed Americans and helped us “herd the cats” that are our children.  She also made the children’s day by purchasing truffles for them.

After Harrods we went back to the Hotel Chocolat for a couple of gift items we had decided to purchase and bring home for friends and family.  And then, we found the Kensington Roof Gardens and THE FLAMINGOS!  It was sort of cool to take Koan somewhere that she didn’t know existed in her homeland.  😉

It was a fun little half-day and now we’re working on packing things up and restoring the flat to its former condition.
