Don Aslett

I didn’t know who Don Aslett was til I somehow wound up with one of his books last month. Clutter’s Last Stand somehow ended up on my library reserve list – I probably saw it mentioned on a blog or in a magazine article or something. Whatever the reason, it came home with me and TW talked about this guy like he was famous or something. Apparently he is if you’re into cleaning tips and stuff. I am not that kind of person sooooo I obviously have never heard of him.

I skimmed that first book and returned it pretty quickly. It was booorrinnngggg. But, I reserved another. Weekend Makeover – ack, that one was a wee bit boring but it is also dangerous. It makes me want to get up and throw things away. A lot of things. In fact if anyone who lives in my house notices something that belongs to them is missing – it might be because I got throw it away fever because of this book and ummm. threw. it. away.

I would really, really, REALLY like to stay home one weekend soon and get rid of about half of the stuff in this house. Looking at the calendar, we might have a stay home weekend sometime around the end of September. Maybe.

Weird, Weird, Weird

I wish someone had told me that the first 20 or so pages of Emotionally Weird were so insane and boring… getting through those first 20ish pages was hell. (I should start reading the Amazon reviews for these things) It took me 10 days to get through that section and then just a little more than a day to finish the rest of the book.

It was, indeed, emotionally weird – and weird in general. Pretty amusing and fun little book. Too bad about the beginning, though.

Tithe

Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale was a nice little young adult DARK fantasy novel. A pixie changling, black knights, some faery queens, kelpies and just about any other fae being you can think of are included here. Completely fun and probably a little scarey at times for young readers just venturing into DARK fantasy faerie worlds. Oh and there’s some gay boy stuff tossed in for good measure, too. Pay attention the DARK descriptive I keep using. It is dark. This is not a light-hearted aren’t the faeries cute sort of tale. There’s a line about how the sunset looks like slit wrists in the bathtub, a pretty dumb but interesting line and an example of the type of “shock” writing in here.

This isn’t a series but there is another by the same author called Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie. I guess I’ll try and reserve that at the library too.

The Understudy

The Understudy was a cute little bit of fluffy chicklit – if the main character is a man, can it still be chick lit???? It’s was an “understudy” sort of book – a not great but waiting in the wings to go on, perfectly acceptable sort of book. I liked the ending. Boy didn’t really get the girl. Boy didn’t get his big break and become the star he always knew he could be. No nice neat ending.

Hollow Chocolate Bunnies

When I blogged about Over Easy I got a really great book recommendation from Fausti – Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse. I immediately reserved it at the library and it’s been in the house for several months now (thanks to the magic of online renewal!).

I finally picked it up a couple of days ago. Read the first chapter and thought hmmmm, is this suppose to be good? TW said it was very good, she read it last month. So I picked it up again and read another 100 pages the next day and yes, it was good! (I think the lack of nicotine on day 2 of my quit caused the lackluster first chapter) I had trouble putting it down today, it was that good. And definitely better than the Nursery Crimes book of Ffordes’!

Jesus Land Trigger Trigger TRIGGER

Jesusland
I finished Jesus Land last night and put off blogging about it because I wasn’t sure what to say, exactly. I’m still not sure of what to say so let’s go with a list. (Good blogging rule, if in doubt just make a list!)

People who should not read Jesus Land

*If you have a history of abuse or neglect and are triggered by stories of such, do not read this book.
*If you are an ANTI ORGANIZED RELIGION FANATIC, do not read this book.

People who should read Jesus Land

*Anyone who is not easily triggered by descriptions of abuse or neglect.
*Anyone who is not an ANTI ORGANIZED RELIGION FANATIC or on the verge of becoming an ANTI ORGANIZED RELIGION FANATIC

Leopard Hat

Well, I loved parts of The Leopard Hat and didn’t love other parts. Some chapters felt like they droned on and on and on while others felt too short and just a little empty. It’s interesting to read “memoirs” to see which stories people give the most detai, the most heart,l to. Or maybe it’s just that Steiker had difficulty writing about the years after her mother’s death? It’s the stories about the later years that I didn’t really enjoy.

If you want to read a nice mother/daughter book, read the first 150 pages of The Leopard Hat and then put it down, you won’t be missing anything by skipping the end.

I don’t like sock monkeys

I’m not a fan of sock monkeys and I wasn’t all that thrilled with “Dickie” the sock monkey in Penn Jillette’s (yes from Penn & Teller) Sock. What a weird book. Weird isn’t generally a bad thing and it was probably the weird that made this worth reading. I mean sock monkeys. NYC police diver. Gay hairdresser. Serial Killer. Lots of dead people. And Proust. If that isn’t a weird combination then I don’t know what is.

Money

I’m not a fan of money. In fact I hate money. Money is the root of all evil, along with gendered bathrooms. And yet, (see there’s that phrase already), money items are on my 101 things to do in 1001 days list. I’ll probably never manage most of them but I should get some credit for having put those things in my list. It indicates I’m at least thinking about money.

Dave Barry’s Money Secrets is about my speed. I much prefer his ideas to the “real thing”. They make about as much sense to me. Someone shoot me if you ever hear me talk about reading a real book about money management, ok? Because that would mean I’m ready to be plasticined and I’d appreciate being helped to the next level. Even Barry’s Money Secrets was too much money talk for me, at points, and I had to put it down and go back to ignoring money completely.

In fact, if I didn’t like Dave Barry, I probably would not have read more than the introduction. But I do like Dave Barry so I read the whole thing. And liked it, in the same way I like a good Dave Barry column. Some chapters (or sections of chapters) were better than others – as is true of all Dave Barry columns. Some chapters (or sections of chapters) were pretty bad in that “Airplane” movie sort of slapstick comedy way. (I hate Airplane and any movie with Leslie Nielson playing some idiotic comedy role)

If you enjoy Dave Barry in the Sunday paper (or on his blog) then you’ll probably enjoy Money Secrets. If you don’t like Dave Barry then try a Suze Orman book instead.
