Crashed

Crashed is another book from a series that I thought I’d catch up  on. A YA series that I started reading because RJ recommended it. Well. When I read the first book, Skinned, I liked the storyline – eventually, but I did not like a single one of the characters and I really disliked Lia. In this book, pretty similar problem. Love the storyline, hate the characters – all of the characters until the last 30 pages of the book… at which point, Lia becomes likeable and so do some of the supporting characters.

And now I want to know what happens next so I’ll probably slog through book three, hating everyone until the last 30 pages.

Bad to the Bone (Down Girl and Sit)

I finally got the RIGHT Bad to the Bone from the library – I reserved two other books with this title neither of which are on the Cybil’s short list. Who knew there were so many Bad to the Bones published for kids in 2009-2010? This one wasn’t great. In fact, it’s one of those kinds of books that I just don’t like. Dogs who think their masters need training and who think they’re “good”…. I just don’t get the humor. I guess if you like that kind of thing… it’s not bad. It’s just not for me.

One more book to go in the Cybil’s shortlist challenge… I’m going to have to buy it, aren’t I?

Book of Shadows

TW said Book of Shadows was good (even if it did have the lamest sex scenes ever…) but when I picked it up to read, she said it wasn’t my kind of book. I have no idea why she thought it wasn’t my kind of book. I like lame sex scenes – and mysteries – and creepy paranormal stories. I really have no idea what her problem was. This isn’t a great book but it’s not a bad book either. Creepy, lame sex scenes, easy to stick with and a pretty good book to read when you’re sick and there’s no way you can focus on anything deep or serious. I might even reserve another of Sokoloff’s books from the library.

A Novel Bookstore

I couldn’t resist picking up A Novel Bookstore from the shelf last week and with the dozens of books on my library cart, I felt really compelled to read this one sooner rather than later. Is there a book lover alive who hasn’t thought about owning a bookstore – the perfect bookstore – and what that perfect bookstore would sell? Exactly.

This book was originally written in French and I was a little worried about that. Not all translations really work, ya know. It’s also billed as a mystery, a love story, and a fairy tale which seemed a little overarching. And then the first few chapters left me a little lost and confused – and cold. But, that framework was important. Once we got past that, and into how The Novel Bookstore came to life – it was fascinating.

Picture a bookstore that ignores the latest releases – and the literary awards. Picture a bookstore that sells only novels – only great novels recommended by a committee of great writers. A secret committee of great writers. Is it any wonder bad things began to happen? How dare they?!

Wonderful book. Really.

The mess this child makes…

Elly is like her mother – she leaves a trail of stuff wherever she goes. This is true of all things, books, food, toys, clothing – but it is especially true of crafting. And extra especially true of sewing.

TW’s new sewing machine is in the family room and when TW has not been using it, Elly has been. She made a stuffed rabbit yesterday. We woke up this morning to find pieces of fabric and stuffing covering every surface of the floor – from the family room to the office. (The dog helped make a bit of that mess, though.)

She spent today, taking him apart, putting him back together, and making clothes for him – the stuffed rabbit, not the dog. And she just brought me a little quilted scarf she made for him.

I think she needs to make a real quilt, don’t you?
