In my heart I hold a memory. It Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and a glorious new Autumn season. Friends have gathered in our home to perform the tashlich, an ancient ceremony in which one casts stones into a body of water to symbolize the removal of misdeeds and regrets from our bodies and souls. It is a gesture which says, "a new season has come, a new beginning, and we are ready to let go."

The one group of women I always hope are extra-exempt from these ridiculous expectations are pregnant women. It's bad enough that "mainstream" society expects women to be belly-less, hip-less, butt-less, and thigh-less (with standards of beauty varying among different cultures, but often no more attainable for the average woman), but no one would hold a pregnant woman to these standards, right? Wrong. In August, several media outlets ran headlines about the widespread phenomena about women who refuse to gain weight during pregnancy.

Here's the scoop. In my outer circle, my friends are popping out babies faster than the Palin family. In my inner circle however, my girls are all deliriously happy indie artist single goddesses unburdened by the darling delight that is motherhood.

After a sporadic ballet career in Twinkle Toes at two and then a serious ballet school last year at four, my daughter has informed me she wants to quit ballet. It is breaking my heart.
