OK this article, Deaths Prompt Abortion Pill Warning has annoyed me.

Apparently there have been a whopping four deaths of women who used RU-486 over the last four years.

Four. Out. Of. 460,000. Women.

This leads the FDA, with its newly appointed chairman, to put out a nice new warning that, gasp, RU-486 might kill you??? And what’s even more annoying than that is if you make it past the shocking and terrifying headline you will see that it was not the RU-486 that killed these women, it was a strain of bacteria called Clostridium sordelli.

Now if the FDA admits that they have no evidence that indicates the RU-486 caused the deaths then why put out a message saying “Deaths Prompt Abortion Pill Warning”? Why not put out an article that says “Clostridium sordelli” caused fourth deaths? Or more to the point, why not “Deaths prompt childbirth warnings”? Because Clostridium sordelli is a risk for women who give birth as well.

Take a moment to google Clostridium Sordelli – you will find reports of men dying of this infection after knee surgery and women dying of this infection after childbirth. It’s not the RU-486 folks, it’s the bacteria.

From WebMD, Decision on Plan B Without a Prescription Expected by September

Sigh, “by September”. Well it’s about doggone time. This dragging of heels by the FDA on a decision is getting a little ridiculous isn’t it? Just make a decision and make it based on the history of Plan B and the studies that have been done and not by conservatives who worry about “Plan B sitting on the shelf next to the toothpaste”. I mean, please, like that’s where the Plan B would actually sit if it got FDA OTC approval. It wouldn’t be anywhere NEAR the toothpaste!

I applaud the Senators, (Clinton, Murray and Mikulski, specifically), who stood up and blocked Crawford’s appointment until the FDA makes a decision – any decision! Good for them. The Senators didn’t say you have to make Plan B OTC, they simply said make a decision and please make a decision based on SCIENCE and not POLITICS or RELIGION. Isn’t that the FDA’s job, after all?

September is a long time to wait, but it’s better than the indefinite we’ve been living with.

Daily Dose of Diet

I suppose it’s fitting that I kick off the first REAL daily dose with a dose of diet. And a troubling dose it is…

Both McDonald’s and Burger King have some marketing folks that I’d like a word with. TW and I have succumbed to their skills twice in the last five days, that might be ok for the normal American but we are vegetarians. Not the PETA nutty type or the Health nutty type, but yukky tummy type.

I’ve got a history of disordered eating and TW went on a diet altering trip to Italy where the furry meat would put anyone off carnivorous behavior for life, not to mention she has ulcerative colitis which makes tummy trouble really troubling.

What’s really troubling about our forays into fast food, besides the tummy troubles, is that we didn’t even GET the Amazon gift card we went for (they ran out!)and TW got a measly pet pet toy that isn’t worth the $2.75 we paid for the Happy Meal!

Someday we will learn to ignore those marketing people, won’t we?
