Work

Who Works Past 7pm on Valentine’s Day?

Me, that’s who.

And as soon as I finish typing this, I have to clean the kitchen and pull together Elly’s lunch and probably pick up some fallen detritus that’s landed in various places and will bug me because I’m so tired right now.

At the end of every week, usually Friday but sometimes Saturday, I look at my calendar for the next week. And I mentally plan out what my week will look like. I also email Darcie, but that’s another issue entirely, and all of my ducks are in a row. This makes me happy. I like a good schedule. I even like a bad schedule as long as there is some sort of schedule.

But lately, all too often, the schedule has gone to total hell and I find myself working til 7pm on a day that I knew was going to be busy but here’s the bad part — all of the things that were on my list to do today, I didn’t do any of them. Not one. Which means all of those things are still to be done – sometime. When, I do not know since there doesn’t seem to be an extra day tucked into this week to help me out.

I’m going to have to do a better job of scheduling stuff. Or I’m going to have to start scheduling some “Surprise!” stuff into my week to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Yea, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to schedule two hours of “Surprise!” work into my days and then create a to do list of stuff that can be done when it turns out there’s no “Surprise!” work to be done.

That will totally work, right?

Post-Holiday Blues

It’s not me who has them. Not really. It’s the dog.

She doesn’t like it when we both work all day. She wants us both in the bedroom, preferably without our computers (most of the time), reading books — giving her belly rubs — giving her treats — just available to pay attention to her, should she choose to want it.

It’s bloody hard to get work done when you have a 45lb dog tugging on your sleeve while you type. Or barking at you when you’re at your desk because she wants you in the bedroom with her (and with TW.)

The first work day of 2013 has been… difficult. To say the least.

Tomorrow will be better, won’t it?

Puppy Mania or Just Mania

This is not the post I planned to write today but since this month’s Nablo theme is “Work” it makes sense that I’m not writing it because of work related issues. And also because my tomorrow is shot to hell and it’s still today, so I will be working a 16 hour day today, after all.

And that’s what my life is like. In a nutshell. This also goes a long way to explain why I never blog here any more.

See, I had to write a blog post for Rita, due this weekend and I’d been putting it off for ages because I didn’t really know what to say. I finally figured it out and I wrote it and there went an hour of blogging time. When was the last time I spent an hour for a post on this blog? Forever, that’s how long it’s been.

Then, I needed to test a tech problem at work so I wrote another post, you can see it here (and you should, if you have a puppy.) Puppy Toy Holiday Gift Guide: Skeeter Bess Approve.

Which led to MomofAli (Mom of Ali, dammit) showing me a photo of HER singing rat. Except hers never made noise because she found it, dead, at a playground. Heh. She thought it was a child’s toy and had no idea it was really a dog’s toy.

Which led me to do a wee video of Skeeter with her rat, so everyone could hear just what it sounded like, (that video is in the BlogHer post I linked above, so really, you should click that link whether you have a puppy or not. It’s worth it.) Except Skeeter wasn’t in the mood to play. She was too bloody busy cuddling with my woman — ON MY PILLOW.

Hmph.

Now back to work I go but at least I didn’t fail at December’s Nablo on day 3.

To Work or Not To Work — Dumb Question

I’ve been at my desk working since about 4:30. It’s 6pm now. I’ve gotten up a couple of times to let the dog out. And, I did get up and fix a plate for dinner (which I ate at my desk, working) and I scooped some ice cream for myself and Elly (which I ate at my desk, working.)

As soon as I finish writing this post, I’ll start a load of laundry and I’ll clean the kitchen. After that… do I come back here to my desk and work some more? Or do I call it done for the weekend?

It’s never a matter of will I work or won’t I work, on my days off. It’s a matter of how much I’ll work.

If I don’t get a jumpstart on the week, or catch up on what fell through the cracks last week, I’ll be so far behind that I’ll never catch up. Or, more likely I’ll catch up by working 16 hour days until it’s done. I love my job but I kind of hate 16 hour work days.

I don’t particularly love spending six hours on a Sunday night at my desk, either.

There are books to read and Firemom watched Dawson’s Creek in front of the Christmas tree today, which sounded like a ton of fun to me. There are movies I haven’t seen that I could be watching. There’s a puppy who’d love me to throw a toy for her for awhile. There are teenagers I could harass, because they so love it when I harass them. I could call my big kids. I could play with my iPad. I could re-organize the cabinets and the stockpile room. I could wrap the last two packages for JMP and his parents and get their boxes packed (and the Fake Husband’s box packed.) There are so many things I could do.

But I won’t.

I’m going to come right back here and barrel through. The work calls and if I don’t answer, I’ll be here tomorrow night until 9pm playing catch up and kicking myself for not getting it done.

What Do You Do On Your Days Off?

I took two days off from work and I had big plans to do ALL the things. Apparently there are fewer hours in the day on a day off than on a day I work because I did not get ALL the things finished.

I worked a few hours each day, which I had factored into my plans.

I did manage to wrap all of JMP’s presents and all of his mom and dad’s presents, though I’m still waiting on one for his mom to arrive so I can get it all boxed up (lord, do they make boxes big enough for all of this stuff?)

I got the gifts I need to send to Charlotte wrapped and shipped!

I finally managed to get the Comcast cable box sent back. I was supposed to do that last week but I forgot.

I ran out to the Navy Base today, so we don’t have to do that on Saturday (which we’d never manage to do since we have to drive kids to hell and back all day long.)

I made it to the library to pick up some books on hold but forgot (again) to pay my fine. Sheesh.

I did two loads of laundry. TWO. And one of them is still in the dryer waiting to be folded. That’s pathetic. I do more laundry than that on a work day.

I did take a short nap and a regular sized nap, which was nice and not really on my list of things to do.

I took the puppy for one walk. One. I would have taken her for two but remembered today was puppy training class and figured we could skip the walk in favor of a nap, since we’d be working during the class. I should have taken her for a walk, that might have saved baby Jesus or the lamb from being eaten.

And that’s it.

I didn’t get a blog post written that is due next week.

I didn’t clean the cabinets or the stock pile room.

I didn’t clean up the videos on my iPhone or the apps on my iPad.

I didn’t go through the winter clothes to see what’s going to Goodwill and what’s going into our drawers.

I didn’t even read more than one book (and that was a graphic novel!)

I didn’t figure out where I stand with my reading challenges for 2012 and figure out what I’m going to challenge myself to do in 2013.

And, I definitely didn’t get my desk cleaned.

Poop.

I hope I can get more done next week when I take some more days off.

I Am Creating Jobs For USA — Are YOU?

We went to Starbucks this morning, it is Wednesday after all. I was extra excited about going because I knew I was going to be helping to create jobs for the USA. I knew this not just because I saw a press blurb about it last week but also because I sat in on a conference call with Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz (and led by BlogHer Co-Founder, Lisa Stone).

I always make small contributions to whatever charitable program Starbucks is promoting in their stores. It’s what I do. Starbucks gives me my Quad Grande Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato three days a week (and on holidays and special occasions) and I support causes they ask me to support. It’s the least I can do, really. And I have found that every single cause Starbucks has promoted has been one that I’d be happy to support.

HIV, Fresh Water, Literacy. Yep, Yep, Yep.

Creating Jobs for USA. DEFINITELY.

So I bought ten wristbands this morning and chatted about the program with my baristas who thought it was extra cool that I’d been in a conference call with Howard, heh.

Image001

Those ten wristbands cost $50. That’s less than I spend at Starbucks in two weeks (less than I spend at Starbucks in one day if all of the kids are home on a coffee day.) That $50 goes an awful long way:

          Every $5 = $35

          $50 x $35 = $1,750

It takes $20,000 to create (and sustain) one new job. My contribution HELPED and yours can too.

You don’t have to buy 10. Just buy one if that’s all you can afford or all you choose to give. That’s one quad grande nonfat caramel macchiato… it’s worth it.

(If you’re a small business owner or considering starting a small business – you should consider applying for a loan at Opportunity Finance, which is where the funds being raised by Creating Jobs for USA are going.)

Maybe I Should Say Goodbye to Lists?

I didn’t make a list today and look at all of the things I did. Well no, don’t look – I’m not going to write them all out, that would kind of defeat the purpose of not having a list wouldn’t it?

Then again, there were far fewer things to deal and deal and deal and deal with.

So maybe it wasn’t the lack of lists, maybe it was just the lack of … well… you know.

So what about that Facebook? Zuckerberg is brilliant, isn’t he? Evil brilliant but I can’t fault him for that.  Makes Google+ seem even more boring than it already is.  (Y’all hate me for saying that, don’t you?)

Maybe I Should Say Goodbye to Lists? Read More »

To Dos Undone

I started the day with a beautiful To Do List and I was sure I was going to be able to knock out 90% . Hah.  The list… so totally not done.

1)      Facebook x10 -> I did this one… barely.

2)      Two morning reports -> Done.

3)      Take a deeper dive into the analytics -> Totally NOT done.

4)      Figure out what’s going on with the two missing projects -> I did send an email, after business hours – so that’s at least something.

5)      Blog x2 -> hahaha. Not even close.

6)      Talk to Diane about Hootsuite. -> hahahaha. No.

7)      Submit a template request -> Done. YAY.

8)      Go through the “tickets” and figure out what’s outstanding -> Not done. Sigh.

9)      Buzz Kathy about an old TO DO that I can’t do for awhile. -> Nope.

10)   Create some new lists to track some new stuff. -> Oy. No.

11)   Program Health. -> Oops. I started, didn’t finish – now I’m screwed for the morning. Oops. Darn.

12)   Think about games. -> I opened a link… and promptly closed the link.

13)   Go to Meijer for free Pasta -> DONE.

14)   Fold a load of laundry -> Nope.

15)   Submit my expenses -> Nope.

16)   Reserve some more books for my trip to Charlotte -> Sigh. I’m gonna be bookless. Good thing my mother has books – even if they aren’t on my challenge lists.

So… a pretty big fail.  What wasn’t on my list…

1)      Submitting new tickets.

2)      Answering 50 emails that I didn’t expect to need to answer.

3)      Spending far more time in Hootsuite than I normally do.

4)      Scanning a pages from a physics text book.

5)      Dealing… I did a lot of dealing today.

I think tomorrow I’m starting without a list.

All Airlines Should be Virgin

I’ve been grumbling (mostly) to myself for ages about Virgin America not flying out of ORD. All of my peoples (see yesterday’s post) got to fly Virgin while I was stuck with United. Or worse – Delta.

Finally, Virgin comes to ORD and Lisa Freaking Stone calls me to Belmont. Yay and Yay! Even more YAY is the fact that the cheapest flight option was Virgin with arrival/departure times that worked in both directions.

And… it’s been the most pleasant flight experience I’ve had in years and years and years.

I’m going to be very sad to fly United at the end of the month. Sigh.

All airlines should be Virgin.

BlogHer Belmont – My Peoples!

As much as I like to be at home, in my own office, in my own bed, with my own family… I do love coming to BlogHer Belmont because these are my people. They just are.

A fun dinner with Lisa, Elisa, Julie, Lynn, Stacy & Rita after a productive day – lots of hugs – and some geeky talk with Liz.

It’s good to see my peoples.

I’ll miss them when I head home tomorrow.
