Yes, I’m a Nirvana fan and not just because Christopher LOVED Nirvana when he was a little kid. I don’t have HBO so I haven’t seen the documentary yet but just as soon as it’s released on DVD, it’s MINE!
The book, Montage of Heck was excellent. Kurt’s art plus animation stills plus interviews = everything a Kurt Cobain fan could want, and more.
That’s not really a title I would ever expect to type, but there you have it. Weird stuff happens in my house every day.
Elly was practicing signing a song, (yes signing, not singing), a school project that she has to be ready to do after spring break. She’s pretty much got it down. This is the song she chose.
But after practicing over and over again for ages, she was sick of that and decided to try signing something else. Of course she was doing all of this IN MY BED (she’s worse than Skeeter, I tell you) and she decided she really wanted to learn the “Rick Roll Song” (which caused me and TW to crack up.)
But, she did not seem to appreciate me singing as she signed, so I decided to wander around youtube for some Elly-like songs that she could sign.
We started with Creep:
Then, Drops of Jupiter:
Which led to Hey Soul Sister:
Which led to Bow Chicka Wow Wow:
Which led to… hold onto your ears (and eyes) and turn the sound up as loud as it will go… Barbie World:
And for the next two hours all I could do was sing “It’s a Barbie Worllllllld”. I love that song but it sure does get stuck in your head. I think it’s worse than that song Rick Springfield sings… (don’t say it out loud, don’t even think it or it will get stuck in your head!)
We’re going to see Melissa Ferrick tonight, in Evanston. Yay for Melissa in Evanston!
Last night she was in Indianapolis and she’ll be heading to Ann Arbor next.
We’re only seeing her tonight in Evanston.
*sniff*
Back in the day, we thought nothing of driving all over the south — following Melissa from venue to venue. We’d get home at 2am on a work night after a show in Jacksonville and head out the next evening and do it again in Orlando or Tampa.
There were some weeks when we’d see her five times, in five different cities and sometimes in multiple states.
We’ve driven to Nashville (from both Florida and Chicagoland) to see her. We’ve driven to Atlanta, from Florida, several times for a show (and then considered following her to Nashville or Chapel Hill coming to our senses just in time to take the drive south instead of north/east.)
I don’t know how many times we’ve seen her in Hollywood, Florida. And then there were shows in Charleston and Tallahassee and Saint Augustine. Not to mention a couple in Gainesville. We’ve seen her in Madison and Milwaukee, too.
(I almost feel like I’m singing “Welcome to My Life” with this list of cities…)
A couple of years ago, we flew to Florida to see the big kids — or so we said. What we really did was fly to Florida to see the big kids AND see Melissa. Twice.
It’s very tempting to walk back to the bedroom and tell TW to get ready for a road trip and follow Melissa to Michigan… very tempting.
I remember when we used to see a half dozen Melissa Ferrick shows a year… those were the good ole days. When we were young. Not that I’m complaining or anything. I’ll take what I can get and when I can get a show as fan-fucking-tastic as last night’s show at Evanston Space was… well, that’s enough.
Her opening act, Ria Mae and Margot Durling were talented AND adorable. (Hi Margot! You need a fan page of your own because… duh, you’re awesome. Heh.)
Anne Heaton joining Melissa for a couple of songs was fantastic, too. (That’s one of the good things about living here, I guess. Odds are higher that we’ll get a surprise guest during a show.)
Michelle, TW and I all have slightly different “favorites” (and our “favorites” lists are very very long) and it was pretty cool that she played one song from each of our “favorites” list. That doesn’t always happen, believe it or not.
I got Nebraska.
TW got Anything, Anywhere (with Anne Heaton, which was a treat.)
And Michelle-Belle got Burn this Guitar (which I didn’t record because a very large guy sat down in front of me towards the end of the show and obstructed the camera view. To record, I’d have had to shift way left or way right and then obstruct someone else’s view. Darn it.
We couldn’t have asked for a better show. Really. Melissa played hard. She had fun, so we had fun. She was funny. She looked happy and healthy (except for that shoulder) and I’m looking forward to seeing her back here in the spring. (Unless she books some shows in Florida before that, then we’ll have to pull out the credit cards…)
At this point, that’s pretty much all I can think of. I wish we were seeing Melissa in the south. I wish the weather was nicer (I’m freezing.) I wish we could follow her around and see two or three or four more shows over the next few days.
Barring all that… seeing her tonight at Evanston Space is pretty damn awesome.
I laughed out loud at Melissa talking about Olivia vacations that aren’t cruises, in case you “don’t like boats”. hahahaha (I also cursed her out loud, I’m not bitter not at all.)
And what’s with the Large/Xtra large tshirts? I might be a little bigger than Melissa but I’m not THAT much bigger and I’m guessing those shirts are not gonna fit me. Damn it. I really want the Heartbeat shirt, it’s very “Threadless-like”. Maybe they shrink?
