Day to Day

Walking! For Fun and Exercise!

TW finally did it and I’m beginning to wish I hadn’t teased her into doing it.  Let this be a lesson to you people, teasing your partner can lead to serious consequences.  You’re wondering what I teased her into doing, aren’t you?  It’s the 101 things in 1001 days list.  She made one.  Finally.  And no you can’t see it because it’s private.  Well it isn’t really private it just isn’t completely public.  If you are dying to know what’s on her 101 things list, then I’ll tell you in private because like I said, it isn’t completely public.  (Hell would you make your list public if it had stuff on it like "brush my hair before work everyday for 2 weeks"?)

Anyway, she made her damn list and besides that brushing hair thing and some really frightening items related to cosmetics and giving up coke, she put walking on her list.  Walking everyday.  For a month.  Around the block.  Twice a day.  Everyday.  For. A. Month.  She’s been talking about this whole walking everyday thing for an entire freaking year.  I have just smiled and nodded my head, knowing she would never actually do this because, well, she doesn’t exercise.  It isn’t her thing.

Apparently hell froze over yesterday because I joined her on the first walk.  I strapped on (get your mind out of the gutter, people!) the pedometer and joined her like a good and dutiful girlfriend.  I complained the entire .21 miles and 10 minutes.  I felt like Prince J, I complained so much!

Five minutes after finishing a very large dinner of hoppin john and greens, she started putting on her sneakers again.  What! We have to walk again? Tonight? In the dark?  Damn, she’s serious about this list.  So I make her wait til I finish my chapter and I join her with the pedometer and again, I complained.  All of the way.

She tried to reassure me that this would get "easier" – umm easier? It’s already easy, that’s the problem.  There is no challenge.  It is boring and a waste of time.  If it gets any easier …  Then she tried to say it would get more relaxing.  Huh? Walking is relaxing?  Oooooooook, I would like to know what drugs Dr W slipped her that I don’t know about.  Because walking isn’t relaxing.  It’s just plain boring.

Well guess what.  This morning at 7am, we were out there again.  Walking.  In the dark.  In the cold (it was only 58 degrees!)  And apparently we are going to walk again this evening.  Can you believe it?  The woman who never follows through and really doesn’t DO exercise is going to walk again.  Geez.  Can’t she follow through on spraying febreeze and scratching that off the chore chart everyday instead?

The Yearly Alphabet

A – Astrid is Chris’s new girlfriend, she changes her hair color more than Michelle ever did – and she tends to sport a buzz cut when she doesn’t have unusually colored hair.

B – Last year blogs were big, they were even bigger this year.  Not only did we attend BlogherCon, allowing us to meet people like Nancy White (gasp!) but I was on a Blogher panel and I spent the year sharing Health & Wellness topics on Blogher.   Even bigger than blogs and Blogher were burritos.  Michelle started working at Burrito Brothers in May and has become quite the expert burrito maker which Prince J heartily approves of.

C – Who in their wildest dreams would have guessed I’d not only be an active member of Clubmom but a blogging member of Clubmom?  Not me, not in a zillion years.  But I started in June and have enjoyed every second of it.

D – TW gave a presentation about blogging for a group of Dietitians in Pennsylvania late in August.  A real grown up conference.  Who’d have thunk it?  D is also for Dexter the Showtime TV series we’ve added to our weekly television watching.

E – Elvis the Rat moved into our house – into my bedroom to be precise.  She and I have mostly made peace with each other, as long as she doesn’t make too many rat noises or escape from the bathroom when she is having "rat time" then we’re ok.

F –  Prince J along with his flute, made it to first chair at the end of fall.

G – Gameboys entered the picture for both E and RJ, even though RJ swore for a full year that she didn’t want a Gameboy.  When the time came for her to create a birthday wishlist both a Gameboy and a Nintendo DS were on her list.  She got the Gameboy and uses Chris’s DS to play the game she likes.

H –  Chris moved home again and lives in the Florida Room.

I – IKEA was big again this year.  Michelle lucked out with a trip to celebrate her 16th birthday by purchasing a brand new bedroom at IKEA in Atlanta.

J – Jenn and Ronnie split up and Jenn has a new guy in her life.  She seems happy and she’s talking about going back to college in the new year.  (fingers crossed)

K – The hermits kicked the bucket, as did the dragons errr anole lizards.  All dogs and cats and turtles still here, though Chanel’s days are numbered.  Old age is catching up with her.

L –  Lists, lists, and more lists.  Life was full of lists.  Grocery lists, to do lists, chore lists, and the infamous 101 things list.

M – TW finally had the mystery bump removed.  It took a 3 day stay in the hospital but it’s gone and we’re glad.

N – No grandchild for me this year.  Jenn ended her marriage and has a new apartment, a new boyfriend and a new life that she seems to be happy with.

O – Out with the old, in with the new – that was a bit of a motto for us.  We worked hard to clean out a lot of old stuff from around the house – it’s still out in the garage though because we aren’t good at follow through.

P –  Christopher has found his way to Leonardo’s where he makes pizza and is on his way to a manager position there.  Pirates were popular (SWEETNEY!!) with Michelle, RJ, Jenn and Chris.  Pirate swim team, pirate music, pirate movies, pirate costumes and pirate bandanas.

Q – It’s far too quiet around here now that the small children have gone off to Cambridge with their father for a six month sabbatical.  Sometimes quiet is nice, right now it’s taking a lot of getting use to.

R – Runewhatever aka Runescape has become the new favorite past-time for both TW and Prince J.  They’re constantly talking about quests and often sound like they are speaking some weird foreign language.

S – RJ enjoyed her stint as part of the Safety Patrol this fall and winter and Michelle entered Sante Fe Community College as part of the Dual Enrollment program.  She took four classes her first semester and has signed up for four more.  Synchronized swimming remained popular, and E added it to her life in the summer.

T –  We are back down to only having one Toyota parked in our driveway.  Chris’s poor little white Toyota finally moved out, it was donated to charity and we hope whoever is using it (or using it for parts) enjoys it.

U – I did a great job of upsetting folks with my discussion of heteronormativity (or lack of) at Blogher, by using the phrase  "grow a pair" and by telling a friend she was behaving poorly as a CL at iVillage.  I’m sure I did more to upset folks, though right at the moment those are the ones that come to mind.

V – Vagina Monologues again this year, with the 1/2 child in tow.  (TW says no ABC list for the year would be complete without mentioning how VERY broke we are.)

W – The big kids’ father left NJ (finally) and moved back to SC.  He’s working at Walmart which is what he always said he was going to do after he retired from the AF.  Who knew he was so prophetic?  Web 2.0 in all its glory has taken over my work life and it hasn’t been all good.  It hasn’t been all bad, either though and World of Warcraft keeps Chris and his g/f busy on multiple computers around the house.

X – My "x" father in law had a liver transplant this summer and is doing amazingly well.  My "x" sister in law had a baby boy just a couple of days ago and is another family member who I still say should have stayed childfree – but do those girls ever listen to me?  Also my brother’s x g/f’s daughter had a baby this year too, another boy in the family.

Y – Yugioh is still popular here, but now in the form of Gameboy games but Pokemon is still the favorite.

Z –  We attended the Zellwood Corn Festival this year and Terri Clark can really wear a hat, can’t she? heh

The Good and the Not so Good

It’s almost 9pm and I have no idea how we managed to fit so much activity into the day. But, we did it and it hasn’t killed any of us – yet. My ears are threatening to explode any moment and TW is at the laundromat where any number of odd things could happen. But for now, we are all alive and semi-well and I’m ready to share some good and not so good stuff we learned today.

Eragon the movie, not so good if you were hoping to see a film that stuck closely to the book. Good if you’re just into dragons and special effects and such. Not so good if you were expecting werecats and faeries.

Having a sister who sends children Shut the Box (a really beautiful version) and just the right sketch kits for each child and all of the solution books for Treasure Trove and The Alchemist Dar is very good. Not being able to find the original Treasure Trove book on the shelf is not so good, (it should be with the purple books and it isn’t!).

Super Snow in a Bag from Dunecraft is very good but the slippery sidewalks after snow fights, well, not so good. Luckily the postman and the Fedex guy and the UPS guy walked carefully and nobody took a fall.

Vegetarian meatballs from gardenburger, very good. Spaghetti sauce all over an eight year old who wants to hug everyone right this second, including the cats – not so good.

It’s nice when even the not so good stuff is pretty ok, isn’t it?

What sort of year was it

Nickie’s year in review was good.  Mine, not so good.  Interesting though.

January:  I mentioned in my ABC’s of 2005 that six MP3 players have come through
our home this year and now you folks get my oh so knowledgable review.

February:  Once again I find myself pining away for a cooking gadget.

March:  Happy Pig Day!

April:  April snuck up on me.

May:  Nuthinfancy
is on vacation so I may be the only one posting "What is this doing in
my house, Monday" but that’s ok because my entry is good.

June:
Happy National Doughnut Day – courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

July:  July has arrived and that means it is time to review.

August:  I am still traveling and have very little time to write but I’m getting
really sort of annoyed and troubled by some of the blog posts I’m
reading regarding Blogher’s cliques, celebrities and queers.

September:
Tomorrow is my sister’s birthday so today’s cupcake topper will be in her honor – Oscar the Grouch.

October:   Since September is about survival around here I didn’t expect to scratch many items off the list.

November:  This post is really just for the Gainesville folks, the rest of you will be bored to tears.

December:  It’s National Cookie Cutter Week!

Grab the first line of the first blog entry each month and post your review.

So, Where Was I?

Good thing I’m not one of those nablomo people, isn’t it?  Not that I haven’t been blogging, because I have been – just not HERE.  The not blogging here is weird because I have had an awful lot to blog about over the last week or two or three.   Having stuff to blog about is good, but what good is that stuff when you don’t have the energy to blog it?  No good at all, that’s how much good.  ("How much good." Heh, I should say that more often.)

I should sleep more often.  Or drink coffee more often.  Or some combination of those two things.

Speaking of coffee … about those Starbucks sleeves, well, what do you think?  Busy, busy, busy aren’t they?  And multi-colored too, what’s with THAT?  And, how can all of the stores in my little town be low on holiday sleeves already?  (So low that we were double cupped with holiday cups this morning.)

And speaking of sleep, TW is making noise about us NOT getting new sheets for Christmas.  This is troubling – we always get sheets for Christmas.  Super expensive sheets.  I have come to really appreciate these sheets and look forward to them, as long as they are white… Even though they are expensive, and I do not like buying expensive things.  You would think I would be happy that TW is not spending a gazillion dollars on sheets this year but no, I’m not happy at all.  I wouldn’t be happy if I was hung with a new rope…

Speaking of new rope, uh no, I wasn’t actually speaking of new rope and have absolutely nothing to say about new rope.  Or old rope.  Sorry.

I’ve been silenced!

I have stuff to say.  Important stuff.  Brilliant observations about kids and family and friends and POLITICS and FOOD but Cox has censored me by popping my connection in and out in the most horrid of manners.

All is moving along nicely and then 30 seconds later, my wireless is trying to connect me to the Hyatt – the Hyatt in San Jose!  What the Fudge?  Others in the house hold their connection but me, I’m being connected all the way across the country?  Turns out it is my sensitive little Stinkpad noticing Cox is having some connection issues because finally TW and Prince J and Michelle and Christopher all begin to have connection woes as well.  My little Stinkpad is just way too sensitive and tries to be awesomely helpful and seeks out a connection in California rather than muddling through with low connectivity here in town.

Tomorrow will be better, surely.  I have a day off and I plan to blog and blog and blog (and do laundry and run all of those errands I totally blew off this weekend in favor of family time and reading and napping).

I do more before 9am….

than the damn Army does all day and I’m getting a little tired of it.

Oh sure, there are some good things to be said for getting up at 4:30am. By 9am the initial work stuff is finished. I’m neat and organized and ready for the first bombshell or the first “I need this” email to arrive. By Noon, I’ve done prepwork for the next day and blog posts have been written. By 2:30, I’m beginning to fade but still quietly sitting in on those phone calls and even more quietly patting myself on the back for getting everything done – and being ahead of the game. By 4:30, I’m done.

And that’s where the problem lies. I can’t BE done at 4:30. I do have a family and they generally frown upon a quick dinner and bed at 4:30. Now I’m trapped in this weird cycle of falling asleep very, very early and waking up very, very early. Even if I wanted to break the cycle, I can’t because the dogs and cats are quite happy with this new schedule, thank you very much – we want our food now, it is 4:45am after all!

OK back to work, darn it.

Save the Hunley!

This post is really just for the Gainesville folks, the rest of you will be bored to tears.  Unless you want to save the Hunley.

Does anyone know who the dude is who drives the blue Jeep Cherokee?  He has a Save the Hunley bumper sticker and his plate says RX DOC 2.  I’m not trying to track him down for anything bad, I’m just wondering why he wants to save the Hunley.

Not that everyone shouldn’t want to, they should.  It’s just very rare to find someone who is vocal about such a thing.  In fact, the only other person I’ve ever known who is vocal about saving the Hunley would be my father.  (Though in Charleston you do sometimes see those Save the Hunley bumper stickers on cars that do not belong to my father.)

I have fond feelings for the Hunley and I couldn’t get the dude’s attention at the stop light to thank him for his efforts.  So, if you know who he is.  Tell him I said thanks and so would my dad.
