Again with the knitting

Yesterday I blogged World Wide Knit in Public Day and today I’m back to review another knitting book. I’m still NOT a knitter.

The Knitting Circle is the best “knitting book” I’ve ever read. Loved every character and every word and I did not want the book to end.

Men and women dealing with grief and loss and fear through knitting and through relationships created and strengthened through the knitting circle. There are some happy endings. Some not so happy endings. Some endings that are both happy and not.

Loved it. Read it. (Thanks for recommending it, mom!)

Gay Bomb

There was a time when I believed the USAF was the “smart” branch of the US military. I was apparently mislead.

Gay Bomb?

As part of a military effort to develop non-lethal weapons, the proposal suggested, “One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused homosexual behavior.”

The documents show the Air Force lab asked for $7.5 million to develop such a chemical weapon.

Zude Beta

I cannot believe Zude Beta launched without support for Firefox. Insane.

Update – just a few minutes after original post. Matt from Zude very quickly emailed me to remind me that there is “early support” for Firefox. And I will add that I realize this is a “private beta” testing. I’m just surprised. Particularly since whatever early support means – it doesn’t mean you can upload your image to Zude using Firefox, but you can with IE. It also doesn’t mean you don’t get weird error messages when attempting to save work with Firefox.

Also, the Zude folks are nice enough to provide several Firefox user messages all over the site. At least they did not pretend they were ready for Firefox users… This one is my favorite:

Regrettably, Firefox support for Windows, Mac, and Linux will be delayed in order to fine-tune its release. If you are interested in participating in a private beta for Firefox, please click here to let us know.

LoL

I’m tired of the LoL cats. I’ve been tired of them since the first day I saw them. Yes I’m the one who sent some geeky friends the LoLTrek thing, and it is amusing. But really. I’m done with this LoL thing. Except, wait. I am finding the LoLesbians a wee bit amusing. Including the late “comer” – here.

Now, I’m sure I’m really done with the LoL thing.

I don’t knit

I just want to remind you of that. I don’t. I’m not going to knit. I do go to yarn stores and look at yarn websites. And I have attended a few of the local knitting groups and I think I’ll be at the knitting in public even this weekend. I also read knitting books. Well before this one, I had read one knitting book, the one that came before Back on Blossom Street.

Back on Blossom Street was a lot like the first one. So much like the first one that I’m not sure I really want to read the third one, which is on the shelf looking at me right now. A lot of feel good, cancer survivor stuff with a bit of cancer is bad tossed in for good measure. A lot of women bonding, which I generally like, but in this case it feels a little contrived.

We picked up with a few of the members of the first book and added a couple more for good measure. Bad things happened, there were misunderstandings (usually involving men but also mothers). Everyone lived happily ever after. Except the bad guy and the perfect grandmother (oops, spoiler!)

It was an ok book. Not great.

Guess what! I’m about to read yet another book. I’m going to start it right now! But I don’t knit.

I’m no Billy Donovan but…

For a few days now TW has been calling me “Billy Donovan”. I have been less than amused. I may live in Gainesville, drive through UF everyday, but I am not UF fan. Heck I suggested Spurrier come back and take his place. See, I can’t even keep my football and basketball coaches straight.

I do have some stuff in common with Billy right now. But I’m smarter than he is. Even without a career coach. Oh wait, my mom and TW happen to be pretty good career coaches. Maybe he should have walked across campus and talked to TW before he made his decision – and then changed his mind.
