He Can Sleep Through Anything

Chris is asleep on the couch. He’s been asleep on the couch for quite some time.

Three feet from the end of the couch is the bird – who screams every few minutes just because she can.

Right next to the bird is TW who has run the sewing machine for hours, while he slept.

Through the open doorway, RJ has been baking. And she is not a quiet baker.

TW called the three small children from dinner, while standing right behind the couch he is sleeping on.

I called him for dinner while standing behind the couch.

He kept sleeping.

Five of us ate dinner, at the table right behind the couch. We talked about the tofu tacos TW made.

The oven timer went off, RJ and Elly jumped up to deal with peanut butter blossoms.

The boy slept on.

I cleaned the kitchen and started the dishwasher, which causes the bird to scream  more frequently. (it’s the sound of running water that does it.)

RJ is back in the kitchen with her cookies – every now and then she claps. Or sings. Or yells loudly.

We talked about unhappiness – why so many people in her life seem to be unhappy. Why she might feel not so happy herself. It’s a mystery. Everyone should be happy. There’s much to be happy about.

TW sews on.

Chris sleeps on.

TW uses the sodastream to make fizzy water.  Is there a louder machine than the sodastream? No, there is not.

I called RJ into the office to give her a book that I picked up for her at the library. She rambles happily about the awesome book (though this book  suggests she no longer needs to say awesome) from the kitchen – loudly.

I called Elly down, from right behind the couch, to hand her graphic novels that I picked up at the library. She squealed with joy and ran noisily up the metal staircase.

I stopped to talk to TW about her quilt problem.

I carried books into the living room to set next to TW’s mother’s chair.

The boy snores a bit louder.

I grabbed my iPhone and took a photo – with a flash.

He’s still sleeping.

There goes the sodastream again… yep, he’s still sleeping.

Dear Creature

Dear Creature is one of those impulse reserves that happens because I log into my library website and see the recently reviewed book covers and decide THAT looks interesting. It did – a graphic novel with a weird sea creature and Shakespeare… interesting, right?

And it was – sort of. It got a little muddled for me right in the middle, (I think it was the octopus orgasm), but picked up again toward the end. Zola was a butt and she deserved to be left behind. Hmph.

Darth Paper Strikes Back

I loved Origami Yoda so it’s not much of a surprise that I loved Darth Paper Strikes Back, is it?  I always worry a little bit about a second book in a series, after loving the first book so much but there’s nothing to worry about this one. I really, really loved the “bonus game included” bit. Brilliant. Clever. Oh so awesome. Even Harvey comes through in the end. I liked that.

Looking for a good ‘tween gift at the last minute? Buy both books and some awesome origami  paper.

Reading Jackie

My mother buzzed me to tell me that I should read Reading Jackie: Her Biography in Books – so I reserved it, even though my TBR list is huge.  TW read it first, as usual, and ranted a good bit about the author and about Jackie, too.

I didn’t find much to rant about, the author’s tone at times is a bit troubling – he’s a man, after all, but I’ve read worse. Jackie – well, she was born in the late 20’s.  Is it any wonder she didn’t want to be known as a brain? Her husband, the President, didn’t want her to be politically active – which also makes sense, look where that got Hillary decades later? Onassis was a dick, duh. All in all, I’d say there’s not much to complain about when you dig into who she was and what she did (or didn’t do.)

Looking at Jackie through the books she published at Viking and then Doubleday was interesting. I’ve only read a handful of them and now I find myself thinking about reserving a few more from the library.  Maybe I’ll start with the Tiffany books, just for fun?

Interesting book – if you’re at all interested in Jackie (and who isn’t, right?)

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Oops! I finished Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children ages ago and forgot to write about it. How I could have forgotten is beyond me. It took me so long to get to it, after wanting to read it for – forever and then it was so freaky good, freaky being an understatement here.

TW wouldn’t read it – the photos freaked her out. I can see why. This is a book that could give you nightmares, if you’re inclined to nightmares about freaky people (which I’m not.)  What brilliant idea to take these odd photos and write a story, about kids (mostly), around them. Super smart. Interesting plot. I’m dying to know what happens next – though I’m a bit troubled by Jacob and Emma. I almost didn’t want there to be a sequel because I’m not super comfortable with their relationship.

Reckless

Reckless. Confusing. It reads like a sequel but it’s not a sequel. I didn’t like that. I didn’t like it that I felt like I’d missed out on a ton of stuff – when I hadn’t. I’m a stickler for reading books in a series in order. This one made me feel like I was reading out of order and that made the whole book less enjoyable.

It wasn’t just me, either. TW thought it was a sequel (though she doesn’t have a problem reading out of order), too.

Now there is a sequel coming to this book and while I’d like to read it, I’m afraid it will just make me feel even more like I’ve missed the first books in the series.

Gah. Jacob had been going to Mirrorworld for 12 years… why didn’t the story start there, with the first time he went in?  Grrrr.

(By the way, I really did like the book – I liked the fairy tale magic and how it was woven into the story. Nicely done.)
