Prairie Dogs vs Cardboard

I asked TW to leave the prairie dogs in their cage until after the cleaning crew finished and she agreed. Unfortunately, the prairie dogs do not agree.

Some days, while they obviously want out, they aren’t quite so loud and hyper about it. They look at you a bit. They chew a little bit. They eat some food. They nap off and on. No big deal.

This morning. They were loud. They plucked the cage, they banged on everything they could bang on. They were driving us INSANE.

So TW dropped a piece of IKEA cardboard into the cage to distract them… it was still loud – and messy – but not cage plucking, banging like crazy loud.

  1. Can you tell me what kind of cage you have? I’ m looking for a cage, but I ‘m having trouble finding one that has bar spacing that prevents cage nose. Thanks, Dave

  2. David – unfortunately, we haven’t found a cage that prevents the cage nose problem. We did rub the bars with lemon juice and that stopped Wilma from gnawing on the bars and allowed her nose to grow the hair back again but we haven’t kept up with that because it’s a lot of work, lol – now one of them has a bit of cage nose going on again.

The cage we originally used was a cage the pet store gave us – it’s actually a cat cage…

We just bought a ferret cage from Prevue Hendryx – bars are the same as the old cage so it’s not going to help with the nose problem.

    Darn it.
