Stuck in Neutral

Stuck in Neutral is a YA book from the Printz Awards list from 2001 and I loved it – until the end, but let’s not talk about the end.

I would love to see an entire series about Shawn – he’d be a bit of an anti-hero. All of the things he sees, doesn’t quite understand and wonders about. All of his insights. There are some amazing opportunities for a writer to help teens sort out situations, questions, ideas.

But then there’s that whole ending thing. Is Shawn still available for a series? I don’t know and I don’t like it.

I have a sock

TW knitted me a sock!

Some of you are aware that TW decided, about a year ago, that she was going to knit me a pair of socks for our “sock day” anniversary. This has brought me no end of amusement because TW did not know how to knit. Heh. Now she does (as do three of the girls) and now I have one sock to show for her efforts.

It’s a gorgeous sock, made with twisted sisters yarn, and I cannot wait ’til I have another one to match. If she knits like an inch and a half everday, I could possibly have it for Valentine’s Day…

My Dreams Out in the Street

The back cover, by the author of House of Sand and Fog, says “Kim Addonizio writes like Lucinda Williams sings….” My Dreams Out in the Street really does feel like that, once you get into it. Took me three days to get through the first chapter (they’re really long chapters) and another day to get through the second chapter… but then I was hooked. Williams’ music is a lot like that for me.

A happy unhappy ending, which is what you’d expect from a novel about people just trying to survive life.

No wonder Kelly is so cool

HER mom is in The Vagina Monologues.

So, not so much education-ish, but my mom asked if I’d ever seen The Vagina Monologues to which I replied, “Sure I have. Why?” and then she proceeded to tell me that she is in a stage version of it to play here at the local community college. She was heading off to her rehearsal and trying to get off the phone with me. Now, I’m certainly nonplussed by this woman so it was nothing for me to say, “Ok. See you later. Good lu…err…break a hymen.” She was nonplussed to hear it from me.

I wish my mom was that cool.
