I like this country, she’s like a whore

If you haven’t bought Melissa’s newest cd, In the Eyes of Strangers,  then you probably haven’t heard her version of Miss Liberty.  And that’s a shame.  Because it’s my new favorite Ferrick song.  You are in luck though, because you can hear it on Black Sheep Management’s myspace music player.  (Does this mean it is also Bryna’s favorite Ferrick song, at the moment?  She’s got good taste, I’ll give her that… she also takes a pretty darn good photo of Melissa. But that’s another blog post, isn’t it?)

Anyway, click that link, stop the Rachael Cantu song (which is good) and click Miss Liberty.  And feel free to listen to it over and over and over again.  Because I am.

I wanted to be Oliver, but he’s a boy….

Do you have the Ferrick cd, skinnier faster live at the BPC?  Or have you seen Melissa sing Mr Bumble live, as an intro to Drive?  If your answer is yes to either of those, then I have to ask if you have ever wondered about "Matt Dorman"?

Do you wonder what he’s doing now? Do you wonder how he feels about being part of the intro to Drive?  Do you think he has a different version of how he came to play Oliver and Melissa found herself playing the "big fat man who was mean"?

Well I’m pretty sure that this Matt Dorman is not the Matt Dorman whose mother was the director.  But I’m wondering if this Matt Dorman is the dude who got the part. (that second link is a PDF but click it if you have ever wondered….)

What do you think?  Am I the only one who thinks about these things?  Is there even a real Matt Dorman or did Melissa just make it all up?

Lorelai, you suck!

I expect suckage from Christopher, he has always sucked and he always will.  His new life as super dad lasted oh so very long, didn’t it?  Totally blew off his grown daughter who he screwed over for 22 years and blew off his latest spawn (who has grown far too quickly, casting screwed up big with that one) when he insisted they get married RIGHT NOW.  Super dad indeed.

Anyway, suck we expect from Christopher but not from Lorelai.

I cannot believe the writers, non-Palladino that they are, would so totally have screwed this up.  I do not care if the spoilers I’ve read are true or not, bad move – totally bad move and unnecessary.  Whoever came up with this idea and whoever gave the go ahead for it ought to be shot.

Lane, Zach and Mrs Kim – I love them.  I hate that Lane is pregnant but love how they are treating the storyline.

Rory falling apart makes some sense, but not to this degree.  She knows what she wants to do with her life – she has always known what she wants to do with her life.  Why we’re seeing this depth of confusion, I do not know.

Maybe she and her mother have both been replaced by pod-people and that will be how they resolve this during sweeps.  The real Gilmore Girls will return and explain that evil pod-people tied them up and left them in Lorelai’s garage and impersonated them.  Thus no Mrs Hayden and no Rory acting like a wishy washy 16 year old.

Non-Palladinos – you suck worse than Palladino did in the last season.

Melissa Ferrick: Never Give Up

Mfcover_front
In the Eyes of Strangers has finally arrived.  I was about to give up! Pre-ordering her CDs is rarely a great idea because they never come when they’re supposed to come.  But, really it’s ok because I would not really have had time to listen to it before now anyway.

To tell you the truth, I haven’t really been looking forward to this one like I have every other Ferrick CD.  Too much twang – I’ve mentioned that before.  Too much Natalia – I’ve also mentioned that before.  But, I might be changing my mind on the second listen.

Remember how I said I hated the song "Stuck"?  Well I have officially changed my mind with this version.  I can almost forget that we were STUCK right along with her when I listen to this one.  Really excellent mix.  I am never going to love "Never Give Up" and "Everything You Get" is better live than it is on the CD.  I love, love, LOVE Miss Liberty (not written by Melissa).  I do hope she’s playing this in her shows, has anyone seen her perform it live?????  Rest Now (the Chris Whitley song) is good, One Year appears to be pulled in part from something we heard during a sound check, very different but there are pieces of the original in there.  I think I like it.  But I’m going to have to listen to it again.  It’s unusual, not typical Melissa and not the super twangy Melissa, either.

I could go on, but I won’t.  Just buy the CD yourself and make up your own mind.  Or, if you’re cheap (or broke) go over to her myspace and listen to a few of the songs there.

Excuse me while I play Miss Liberty again and again and again.

Why Lie?

So Lynne Cheney wanted to talk about her children’s book and only her children’s book. I get that but when you meet with the press, you answer what they ask you – TRUTHFULLY, particularly if you are the wife of the VP. What really bugs me though is what is wrong with Sisters or Body Politic that she has to talk around it or out and out LIE about what she wrote? Nothing. Not a single thing, whether you are liberal or conservative. She wrote fiction. Some of it sexy. Some of it not so much. Some of it straight and some of it queer. So what? You can still be a conservative “family values” republican and write fiction. You just can’t LIE and say it isn’t what it obviously IS. Well I guess you can, since Lynne Cheney did it.

The Cheney’s have never said they are for a ban of gay marriage. They have said out loud that they disagree with the amendment to “protect marriage”. So “Sisters” isn’t telling anyone anything that they should not already know. The left making a big deal of it isn’t really helpful either, except of course that it causes Mrs Cheney to lie, that part – that’s helpful, I suppose. The left trying to point out the Mrs Cheney has written steamy fiction isn’t all that helpful either. I somehow doubt any conservative is going to change his/her mind and vote liberal simply because the VPs wife wrote some steamy passages in Body Politic.

Politics, sheesh.

Daily Dose of TV Angst

I now watch three television shows a week.  Survivor is not even worth blogging about, at this point.  So let us just ignore that one for now, ok?  Instead, I’m going to rant about two of the best shows on TV.  Well one of them USED to be one of the best shows on TV, sigh.

Gilmore Girls post Palladinos is not great.  It wasn’t great last year with Palladino but darn it, I want GREAT.  I hate, hate, HATE Christopher and Lorelai.  Actually I just plain hate Christopher.  And that whole Gigi/Sherry thing was idiotic.  The only good thing about last night’s Chris/Lor relationship was Emily calling them derelicts.  That was awesome.  The rest, it stinks and Emily is awesome without the stink that is Lorelai and Chris in a relationship.  And, I was stupid enough to look at the fall sweeps spoilers and if the GG rumors are true I may destroy my television when it happens.  Suckage – pure suckage.  (I did, enjoy picklegate and I did enjoy Rory/Logan – even the whining at the end by Rory and Logan’s manipulation of her whining.  It’s excellent and will lead to a nice little end to their relationship – which, I’m so totally looking forward to. That is what’s going to happen, right?)

Now about Dexter.  I loved the books.  I’ve loved the television.  But I was sorely disappointed in last night’s serious deviations from the book.  Small deviations, I dig.  I understand.  I fully support.  But last night, one was particularly troubling.  The dog incident.  That is not what happened in the book.  I won’t tell you what did happen in the book, in case the television folks decide to add that element in somewhere later – which they totally should do.   I’ve been really impressed with the lack of changes and if there are going to be more, I’m going to be seriously unhappy…. Dexter, the book, is awesome and it makes great TV.  Don’t screw with that, people.  Stick to the BOOK.

OK I’m done angsting for the day.  Back to work!

Daily Dose of Television – DEXTER!

I have been talking about the Dexter books for a very long time now. If you have not paid attention and have not read them then you have missed out on greatness. And I would feel sorry for you if I was a better person. Instead, I’m just annoyed with you. The Dexter books are awesome.

Now, Dexter has moved to Showtime and is awesome there too.

I was a little worried. Books you love tend to be a bit of a letdown when they hit the screen but I was worried over nothing. An excellent transition was made. Really excellent. I am only worried about two things – first, will they move too quickly or too slowly and second, will there be more books? We need more books.
