I’m not really into queer animals

I know that’s a relief to all of you. That whole gay penguin thing, whatever. I really just don’t care. And if I can keep myself from pointing at the constantly breeding heterosexual cats in the world and condemning heterosexual relationships because of the cats behavior then I would really prefer it if folks didn’t point at gay penguins and say “See, Denise & TW are normal!”. Please. Just don’t bother, ok?

But in this one particular case, I’m going to share. Only because it’s flamingos. That doesn’t mean I think we need to point at the flamingos and say SEE, queers make great parents too! They do, we just don’t need flamingos to prove it. So enjoy the flamingo story and stay calm.

I’m not transphobic

I’m definitely not transphobic.

And, while I do support women born women spaces, in some instances, this isn’t the problem either.

I simply do not like the transgendered monologue that has been added to the Vagina Monologues. It does absolutely NOTHING for me. It feels flat, uninspired and there is no passion in it. Ensler can do better and trans women deserve better.

Last year, I thought it was the multiple voices doing the monologue. This year, I’ve decided that’s not the problem. The monologue just plain stinks. Something called They Beat the Girl Out of My Boy… Or So They Tried should be a lot more passionate than it actually IS. I would really love to see the other trans monologues, surely they are better than this one.

Other than this little gripe, we enjoyed this year’s performance of the Vagina Monologues.

  • It was amusing having it at “our church”.
  • The crowd was too small.
  • The elderly man in front of us who told his wife very loudly during the Vagina Workshop that he was leaving was sad and amusing. (Why don’t people research these things before they attend? Why would he have agreed to go to something called the Vagina Monologues in the first place?)
  • Speaking of the Vagina Workshop – weird not hearing it with a British accent but I enjoyed the performance.
  • I was also pleasantly surprised by The Flood – except she flubbed her best line “Closed due to flooding” – she said “Due closed to flooding”, heh.
  • The tshirt is much better this year than last. It will look fabulous with Susie Bright’s “Clits Up” button. Now to get Michelle to wear it so I can take a photo.

    Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen was a fun little young adult book. About cows! And girls playing football! And figuring out your place in the world, in your family, in your relationships. Who knew a 250 page book set on a dairy farm in Wisconsin could touch on so many themes?

Dysfunctional family but only mildly so. Lesbians in high school, who knew?! Farm girl falls for popular boy, popular boy falls for farm girl but that sort of thing never works out in high school so everyone gets hurt and of course it is farm girl’s fault for being – awesome. Girls should not be so awesome, it makes popular boys uncomfortable. Bah.

I liked it. I would have liked the last few chapters to be a little different but that’s probably just me.

    Class Matters

Class Matters is a terrific book for homeschoolers or for UU folks looking for a non-fiction book discussion. We spend a lot of time talking about feminism or racial prejudice or homophobia but we avoid discussions of class like the plague. Class Matters makes good solid points as to why we need to stop doing this. And it gives a lot of good tips for people who want to take part in classism discussions or movements.

Fabulous book, I’m going to buy it.

    The Problem with Kate Delafield

I’ve finally figured out what the problem is with Katherine Forrest’s Kate Delafield mysteries, the problem is Kate herself. Her personality varies almost completely from one book to another so it doesn’t even seem like she’s the same person. Kate Delafield has a personality disorder and I wish Katherine Forrest would help her fix that – and fix it so we always see the Kate Delafield who was in Liberty Square (and Sleeping Bones) and not the Kate Delafield who was in Hancock Park.

The entire Vietnam veterans storyline often feels tired and over done but in Liberty Square I never found myself annoyed with the characters for rehashing the problems with Vietnam the way I have with other books. I liked every single one of the characters. I liked the way Forrest covered the problem with being gay in the military, now and then. Even the sappy ending with everyone visiting The Wall felt like it fit and wasn’t forced.

Finally, a reason to like Detective Delafield (and her g/f) again.
