Day to Day

Our Future is in Their Hands?

I took Michelle to get her books for this semester and then we ran over to Burrito Brothers to grab her paycheck. Students are back so of course there was no parking in the tiny little lot, I squeezed into half of a space on 14th and sat with the car running. Michelle came out quickly and I pulled out onto 14th, made a right into pretty heavy mid-day traffic onto University.

“Students are back.” I said. The traffic was murder and there were kids all over the place. You have to be pretty mindful of what they’re doing because you never know when they are going to decide they need to be on the other side of University Ave (a very busy 4 lane road).

So Michelle and I were talking about how many hours she had worked last week. I moved to the left lane as soon as I had a chance and was going between 30 and 35, did I mention the traffic was heavy?

I’m approaching a green light when out of the corner of my left eye I see some flash of movement.

“What the….” BAM. I instinctively put on my breaks and watched a college student (male) get hit by a small silver car.

He decided he could run across four lanes of traffic, cars going 30-40 miles per hour would of course slam on their brakes as he darted across the street. And they did, but he still got hit. And then tried to get back up and keep running. Which is why when Michelle said “Mom, the light’s green.” I ignored her and watched just in case he decided to keep on running.

What in the hell is wrong with these kids. I know, I rant about this every year, but it’s getting worse. Crossing against not only the crosswalk light but the traffic light. Crossing University wherever it suits them to cross. U-turns at the drop of a hat in areas where a u-turn is less than safe. I just don’t get it.

Take this young man for instance. Did he go home, or to whatever bar he was obviously headed to, and think about what would have happened if his parents had gotten a call on the first week back to school saying “your son was hit by a car”…. or did he go back to his room or to Burrito Brothers for a late lunch and wonder how the driver of that car would have felt if he had not been able to hit his brakes quickly enough to prevent serious injury – or if the cars behind it would not have been able to stop, causing a chain reaction that certainly would have caused him more injury.

Do 20 somethings stop to think about anything at all? I’m beginning to doubt it.

To the person driving the silver car – good job hitting your brakes and avoiding what could have been a very serious injury to this kid. I hope to goodness he apologized and he thanked you for paying attention.

Post BlogHerCon Recap?

If that’s what you’re looking for, you aren’t going to find it here.  Luckily there are women who made it home a lot earlier, and with a lot less stress, than I did.  Go read their blogs, I’ll get to my own recaps eventually.

For now, I’m busy unpacking bag after bag after bag of clothes and cards and toys and books and schwag! Oh the schwag! Most of it I never saw til I unpacked it.  I barely had time to look at the exhibit tables and I never even opened my schwag bag.

We’ve made a dent in the laundry and a dent in the schwag and I’ve made a huge dent in my very long “to-do at work” list.  I’m looking forward to getting back to work and back to a schedule.

Older than dirt

If you ask the little kids how old I am, they will immediately tell you I’m older than dirt. I’ve been telling them that since I first met them and they’ve embraced the idea completely. In fact they will happily talk about what being older than dirt means. But they don’t know the half of it.

Site redesigns are fun and interesting and challenging and rewarding but OMG they are exhausting. There was a time when I could stay up working (or playing) for 36 hours and not feel like I was falling apart. That time is long gone. And three hours of sleep after a 36 hour day is really not doing me a whole lot of good.

But. I’m pretty pleased with the way the new BlogHer looks and functions. There are resolutions in place for the majority of known problems and the other issues are sure to be resolved quickly because we have such an amazing team.

In the meantime, I’m tired. And BlogHerCon 07 is in umm 3 days?

I am so totally older than dirt.

Do I sound different on the phone?

So I was in this conference call with a bunch of people tonight and one of those people was sassymonkey. Can I just say she sounds different on the phone than she does in real life. Luckily she has that Canadian tone to her voice, and she was talking about stuff that I knew immediately only SHE would think to bring up. That is probably the only reason I knew it was her! Weird.

Do I sound different on the phone? TW does and I’m sure people call her at work just to hear her phone voice.

I really need a shower

Just thought I’d share that since I blogged light yesterday and will probably blog light today. Shopping with little kids and cuddling babies in the mall set my workday back a few hours so shower first, work second, blog last.

Except for this post. Oh and at ClubMom which I haven’t written and can’t remember what I was planning to write and I don’t seem to have a July outline for ClubMom which I usually try to have.

Did I mention I really need a shower?

Randomness

Well. Here I am. Trying to come up with eight random things because Nickie, who I love, tagged me. If you list random things do they then become less than random? And is anything really random since anything you think of is probably triggered by something going on in your life anyway? I don’t know if “random” really exists in the way we tend to think it exists.

Onward with eight.

1) I am the finder of lost objects and not lost objects. Nobody in this house bothers to even look for anything, they just ask me if I know where X is and generally I do. Except today, which means this item is not so random. ‘Cause something is missing and I have no idea where it could be since all of my ideas have come up empty.

2) It bugs me a lot when I do not know where stuff is. Or have a general idea of where something is. You’d think this would mean my house is neat and organized, it doesn’t. It just means I pay attention to what’s in the clutter so I can find things. Except for today, apparently.

3) I bought BlogHerCon shoes! This is a big deal. I rarely buy anything for myself and to buy an article of clothing or shoes is more rare than me not being able to find whatever someone is looking for. They are special shoes. Wanna see them?

4) Looking around and trying to come up with a random thing is difficult. As soon as I think of something I don’t think it’s random. Is it random to say that yesterday I thought our bedroom was pretty tidy, all things considered, but today I’m thinking it’s time to get out the trash bag and do a Fly Lady Fling everyday for the rest of the week. Maybe I’ll find the missing items…

5) I profess to dislike Fly Lady because of that whole shoes and makeup first thing in the morning requirement, but I have a secret love for her. TW has suspected this for awhile and I confirmed it earlier in the week. This made her nervous and caused her to wonder what I’ve been flinging during my 15 minute a day fling. Hahaha she doesn’t know where anything is in the house so she’ll never figure it out.

6) Which reminds me, our garbage can is too small. Our city garbage can had a big hole in the back so TW earned her keep by calling the trash folks and asking for a new one. They brought one a couple of weeks later and it’s smaller than the original garbage can. Far too small for a family of 5 (which is what we were at the time) and 3xs too small for the family of 8 that we’ve become again now that the little kids are home. I need to call and get them to bring us the proper size can. Soon.

7) We also have a new kitchen garbage can. Actually we bought two. The first one TW picked out and I quietly hated. But she hated the original garbage can (which I picked out) so I figured fair was fair. Which doesn’t make sense since I am the one who uses the kitchen garbage can the most. Anyway, that can lasted about 2 days and then everyone in the house was expressing hatred for it. We moved it up to the kid bathroom and I purchased one at Publix that we all seem to like more. Though it has its problems, too. At Home Depot last weekend I saw my old original garbage can and caressed it fondly while TW was not looking.

8) It’s sort of like my hairbrush. The pink goody hairbrush that I love so much but have difficulty finding a replacement for. It’s so hard to find a replacement that when TW did find them, she bought several. And one is still in the packaging unused because I’m afraid I will never find another one like it again. So while that one sits in the packaging, unused, I struggle along with other hairbrushes that I dislike.

There you go, eight bits of randomness from my life. Should I tag people or just encourage others to play as they wish? I think I’ll tag – but I’ll go track down some newbie people at BlogHer and give them some link love. I’ll be back with links later. But feel free to play too, if the spirit of randomness moves you.

Tagging:
The Worst Mother
The Milk Bar
Miss Grace’s Disgrace

Update: Because I know you were concerned about that missing item, it has been found. In the place I should have known it would be – Christopher’s room. When something goes missing and is not in any of the spots it should be in – it’s in his room. I wonder where missing things will end up when he moves out. Probably at his apartment.

Job Changes

What an odd feeling. I woke up this morning and had absolutely no idea what to start working on. I had a wee bit of this feeling on Saturday and on Sunday but since we were traveling, it was easy to just move through my morning and not get fixated on the jobs I was no longer doing. But this morning, that was odd. More than odd, but difficult to explain.

For more than six years I’ve been following a very specific routine. As soon as I wake up, I feed the animals, nuke a cup of day old coffee or a fresh cup of tea, I read my email and then visit a certain website and read a dozen or more message boards. Six years. The number of days I’ve deviated from that can be counted on two hands. Six years is a long time.

I’m not sure I can say that I miss those boards. I obviously miss some things about them, like hearing about the “regulars” and their lives and venting with my coworkers (though it is nice to not feel a need to “vent”.) It’s the change in routine that I was missing more than anything else this morning. I am a creature of habit. Now I have to create some new habits. That’s weird. And challenging. And interesting. Did I mention weird?

The perfect present at the perfect time

I worked my ASS off today on about 800 different things and I have about 42 really important things left to do tonight before I go to sleep. I did so many things that I am just now finding time to read my feeds. Mostly I was just mindlessly clicking them and telling myself I was reading them. I hate that “mark all as read” option. I’d rather click and stare blankly and give a half hearted attempt to scroll through the 42 items posted today on flogging baby. So, I was clicking and not paying attention until THIS appeared.

hellomynameisinigo.jpg

A present from TW. Heh. I love The Princess Bride. True Love! You killed My Father! Inconceivable! Now I can go back to work – well after I finish mindlessly clicking through the last 252 new items in my reader.

It’s like rain after you wash your car!

I spent my weekend doing this:

53bags.jpg

That would be 53 bags of leaves and ferns. 53 and the front yard isn’t even close to being free of leaves or the ferns that have been taking over the yard. 53.

And then this pulls up in front of the house this morning.

treedudes.jpg

That would be the tree truck. Which means more leaves will fall when they do whatever trimming the city has requested they do.

Sheesh.

So I went to a Stitch ‘n Bitch

I only went to lure the shy TW into the group and what did we find when we arrived? Our old friend Laura who we originally met online YEARS ago. The same Laura who was also TW’s nurse the first time she was in the hospital for UC (now Crohn’s). Gainesville is a small, small town. And Laura had her spinning wheel.

The Stitch ‘n Bitchers were very nice, very welcoming, very yarn crazy. Very interesting to me, a non-yarn person. Heh. Two spinning wheels in attendance. INTERESTING. And it was cool to meet the famous Lorena from Snarkland in person. Finally.

Anyone want to take bets on how long it is before TW owns a spinning wheel?
