Was my grandmother a Deadhead??

It wasn’t enough for Rosanne to be channeling my grandmother, now the Impulsive Buy people have got me wondering if my grandmother was a closet Deadhead.  Didn’t she have some dancing bears?

I do know that she had an AMC Pacer and she LOVED McRibs.

That whole Rocky Horror Picture Show thing, that’s just going too far.  I cannot even begin to think about my grandmother knowing anything about RHPS much less being a fan.  Nope, not going to think about that.  Ever.

Dirty Places in Gainesvillle

I’m very amused by the 12 dirtiest restaurants in the Gainesville area.  Should I really find this amusing since we visit two of these restaurants on a very regular basis and have visited others (or ordered from them) quite a few times?  Should I really find this amusing since TW really should not be exposed to food prepared in restaurants with as many violations ans these have (or had).  Hell yea I should be amused and I’m pondering the idea of breakfast at 43rd St Deli this weekend (or maybe Jeff’s instead, we’ll have to call first to see if he has bialys.)

Yea yea, food safety is important but you can’t live your life worrying about every restaurant you walk into.  I figure if TW drops dead from food poisoning or e coli after visiting Waffle House, she’ll be ok with that – Waffle House makes a great "last meal".

I am not a foodie, damn it

I swear I’m not a foodie, but I am enjoying my very foodie gift quite a bit.  Even all of the chocolate, which I don’t generally love.

P1010001_3
See that picture there?  That’s a picture of my foodie gift.  If you click it, you’ll see my friend sent Trader Joe’s to me since I am always griping because I cannot go to Trader Joe’s and EVERYONE else can.  I have nice friends.  Even if they send me chocolate when I do not like chocolate.  Maybe particularly since they send me chocolate since I actually ate a good bit of that chocolate.

First, there was the white pom tea.  Love it.  I think there might be three tea bags left.  There were like three days straight when I did not make coffee or reheat two day old coffee and I drank hot white pom tea instead.  Awesome stuff.  (I think I should hide the last of it before Prince J returns on Friday or he will finish it, I’m sure.)

Then we opened the TJ’s chocolate candy bars.  I had one, TW had one and then I ummm had the last one.  Heh.  Not all in the same day, sheesh.  I don’t like chocolate, remember?  Michelle opened some TJ’s chocolate chip cookies and really REALLY liked those.  I think RJ might also have had some but don’t hold me to that, she may have chosen another snack instead – I can’t remember.

The plantains I love, but you probably guessed that because surely I have talked about my love of plantains before.  The dried cranberries were only so-so as a snack out of the bag but they were beautiful in the banana bread I made on Sunday.

Last night during Gilmore Girls, TW opened the truffles… I did not take my friend’s advice and put them in the freezer.  I should have because they were very melty and TW was covered in chocolate.  She was also making noises in front of Michelle that I prefer she only make in private – apparently the truffles were that good.  She got up and got more while I glared at her and reminded her of her recent visit to the doctor and her vow to die of liver failure instead of heart failure.

Now, what do we have left in this little snacky box?  We have some spicey nuts that I will open this weekend since I am out of plantains.  And we have some cornbread mix which I plan to use this weekend for dinner.  And some dried mango which I haven’t decided about yet.  I’ll get back to you.   Oops, forgot also there’s Panda licorice which I won’t touch but TW was oohing and aahing over (are there antioxidants or omega3s in that?)

I love Trader Joe’s and my very nice friend for sending Trader Joe’s to me.

Daily Dose of Sandwiches

I am a sandwich fan.  No surprise, right?  Quick to make.  Not much clean up.  Hot or cold.  Vegetarian or flexitarian.  You name it, a sandwich can do it.  It is Sandwich Day and I’m celebrating.  I’m not sure how I’m celebrating, but I am.

I’m well-known for my grilled cheese.  A child who shall remain nameless often requests my grilled cheese when given the power to choose the menu for lunch or dinner.  This child does not want TW to make grilled cheese, or didn’t until the Grilled Cheese Cookbook entered our lives.  Now, all of the children (even E who does not like grilled cheese) is pretty happy with her mom making grilled cheese.

I’m also well-known for my peanut butter sandwiches.  But nobody ever wants me to make them one of my specialties because I prefer peanut butter (smooth) and mustard.  I don’t do jelly or mayo or honey or banana or anything else you weird people put on your peanut butter.  Mustard is perfect.  Nice blend of sweet and spicy.

Hmmm maybe an egg and cheese sandwich would be good right now.  That’s what I always order at Waffle House, and we haven’t been to Waffle House in ages.  Wait, maybe we should just go to Waffle House for dinner tonight instead?

The sandwich possiblities are too great, how will I ever decide?  I know! I’ll wait til Michelle comes home from school and have her make me a sandwich!

Daily Dose of Vegetarianism

Are you a fan of Amy’s Kitchen? Do you find yourself occasionally growling over the fact that an Amy’s Kitchen product is twice the price of a non vegetarian version make by some big name food producer? If your answer to both of those was YES! then you should visit I.Ate.A.Pie.Net this week and leave a comment. That leave a comment part is important. Because if you leave a comment to one of her Amy’s Kitchen reviews, she will enter your name in the drawing for Amy’s Kitchen Coupons (which are hard to get, in my experience).

Now what’s your favorite Amy’s product? (All of her burritos) And what is your least favorite? (the toaster pops aka pop tarts)

Daily Dose of Recipe Doctor

After the Blogher extravaganza, we skipped Woolf Camp in favor of me nursing a hangover and meeting a very dear friend who I have only had the pleasure of chatting with on the phone or email over the last 4 years.  I finally met Elaine Magee, the Recipe Doctor!

And I was so brain-dead and hung-over that I didn’t even get a picture of the big event.  I had the darn phone in my hand or on the table in front of me and I didn’t even use it.  I’m an idiot.  TW said we should make her drive all the way back to the hotel so I could remedy the situation.  Ummm no, I love Elaine too much to ask her to do something like that, ’cause she’s so nice she would probably have done it.

Elaine is just that nice and it’s impossible to put into words how fantastic it was to meet her in person, finally.

Daily Dose of Food – Zucchini Boats

So, guess what! Besides staying away from the beach and cleaning the garage (which isn’t done but we got a lot of it done) and going to the grocery store and Home Deopot – I did something else important. Something I really try hard not to do very often. I cooked. And I almost enjoyed it.

Alanna posted these zucchini boats awhile back and I thought they were beautiful. And, even better, they have feta. I love feta. So I made them. Me.

Yep, I scraped out the inside of the zucchini and I sauteed everything up and I filled the zucchini boats and I put them in the oven. And they were good. I thought they were really good.

I just wish it wasn’t such a pain in the rear to scrape out the darn things. I’d pay someone to do that part. Even if TW does have the cool Dean & DeLuca food carving set thingy.

Try them. And tell me (and Alanna) how you liked them.

Daily Dose of Miami – Fun with Food

So, Miami.  I mentioned that I don’t really like Miami, right?  I do like the fact that you can get Cuban coffee in Miami and it’s really good Cuban coffee.  I didn’t actually have Cuban coffee on this last trip, but that’s ok and in just a second I’ll tell you why.

When I travel with the little kids, I try to remember that they expect a "food experience" and not simply to be fed.  Regularly.  The older three children found being fed at all was enough of an experience for them, so traveling with them was pretty easy.  Not so with the little kids.  I’ve had to adjust and adapt and plan, and that’s ok.  Sometimes it’s even fun.

On our first real evening in Miami, I realized we had somehow NOT planned any "food experiences" at all.  I realized this after the kids had gone to dinner with their father (to celebrate Father’s Day) and TW and I had no plans for dinner.  Not having dinner plans isn’t uncommon for us, but it caused me to realize we had no dinner plans or lunch plans or breakfast plans for the entire trip.  Ack!  Bad!  Little kids will expect food experiences.  Regularly.  And the bagel place and Starbucks down the street really won’t cut it for the whole trip.

Be proud of me, I didn’t panic.  I surfed our options while sitting in my chat at 6pm on Friday night.  I found some ideas.  I found someplace for TW and I have to have dinner.  Potential disaster and mutiny averted!  We headed out.

Cafe Demetrio, in Coral Gables, was a good find for us.  Great coffee, (I had the signature coffee drink and TW had a caramel latte), and I mean really great coffee.  Decent food, not great, but definitely decent – with enough vegetarian options that we didn’t feel stuck with the grilled cheese (though that’s actually what I ordered, heh).  We sat in the garden and eavesdropped on the locals – fun and challenging since my Spanish is not so great when folks are speaking a mile a minute, which is what people who speak Spanish do.

Saturday arrives and a better plan than my original breafkast plan comes to me.  The Original Pancake House, duh!  The little kids weren’t with us when we went last month and surely there was one nearby… yep, just a wee drive from the hotel and almost on the way to our first touristy stop of the day.  We arrived in time for brunch and it was a good choice.  Pigs in a Blanket were a hit with J and E while RJ enjoyed her Dutch Baby (though she thinks she would like the Apple Baby better) and enjoyed my Crepes even more.

I had planned a trip to an Italian Market for lunch but as we were heading toward our next stop, TW spotted The Cereal Bowl!  Change of plans, people!  The Gainesville "cereal restaurant" isn’t so hot but we had high hopes for this one and we were NOT disappointed, at all.

TW made a wee error in judgement and TOLD the children we were going to have cereal for dinner before we actually arrived at the restaurant.  Oops.  This led to much grumbling and many disaparaging comments about our food experience choices from the Prince.  Until he walked in, looked over the counter, and realized this was HIS KIND OF PLACE!  You see, Prince J loves to roll his own.  Whether it’s sushi or burritos or wraps – if he can choose the filling, then he is a happy young man.  He likes to create, to be IN CHARGE.  The Cereal Bowl made him very, very happy.

It actually made us all happy.  E was a little confused about the concept.  She wasn’t really sure about mixing so many things together, so she just went with a few cereals and a couple of "safe" toppings.  RJ, on the other hand, went all out.   Prince J, in his typical manner, calculated slowly and carefully and was pleased with the results.  I even ate oatmeal – for the first time in 23 years – and I liked it.

The Cereal Bowl was such a hit, they begged to go back and they plotted their next creations for hours, and we did go back for breakfast the next day.  E was more adventurous and ate more cereal than I thought a child of her size could hold.

Oh, we also visited Swenson’s for ice cream one evening and Johnny Rockets for lunch on our way out of town.

Good food experiences were had by all.

Daily Dose of Problems – Fruits & Vegetables

We are having a problem.  This whole going to the farm and getting fresh vegetables and organic vegetables (so we know the name of the man who knows the name of the man who picks our carrots – or would if we hadn’t forgotten the name of the man who knows the man… uhhh sorry, you probably are confused ’cause you didn’t read my blog a couple of months ago… oh I clicked that, his name is Don!)… has led to some problems.  First problem.  We dont’ really cook or eat vegetables.  Or fruit even.  Next problem.  The refrigerator is so full of fruit and vegetables that we have no room for things we do eat (and drink) like coke, pepsi, mt dew, Hawaiian Punch Brown, juice, eggs, cheese, salsa, cream cheese filling, and sour cream.

We either have to stop ordering fruits and veggies – or reduce our order significantly, which makes me wonder if it is worth ordering at all – or start EATING the stuff we are ordering.

It’s a problem

Anyone want some tomatoes? Or green beans? Or snow peas?  How about spaghetti squash, blueberries, strawberries, peaches and broccoli?  We have a lot of broccoli.

Daily Dose of Doughnuts – Free!

Dd

Happy National Doughnut Day – courtesy of Krispy Kreme!  I love KK doughnuts – the yeast type, not the cake type (I don’t eat any cake type doughnuts).  I prefer a "hot n now" glazed or a "hot n now" chocolate covered glazed but will pretty much eat any other variety.  Except the topettes.  I do not like sprinkles on my doughnut.  Yuk.
