Daily Dose of Kids – Paint

My father and I have something in common, we both hate to paint.  We both agree that the best part of living in military housing is the fact that we can tell our spouses or children – sorry, you can’t paint the walls because the military won’t let you.  I spent 20 years not having to paint bedrooms by simply using that nice little excuse.  Once, I violated those rules and allowed Jenn to put wallpaper border on her walls and then lived to regret it when the time came to strip those walls and get everything back up to "standards".

Jenn lives in military housing with her husband, and has since she got married.  She ignored those rules and stenciled and painted and wallpapered up her military housing in NJ.  And then had to repaint everything military off white before she moved to Charleston.  You’d think she would have learned her lesson but no, she hasn’t.  She’s painted and stenciled and wallpapered up her new house.  We always use to tease her about being adopted – this is one of those reasons.  Neither the dirtbag or I would ever do that much work on a house that had to be repainted military off white in a few years.

So why am I doing it now, in a rental unit??  Letting these kids choose these incredibly dark colors?  Michelle had a mural on her wall for a couple of years that was every primary color plus black.  Her bedroom door is still a combo of black and red.  Now she’s got that deep teal green color, E has a light but incredibly bright blue and RJ has hit somewhere in the middle with a cross between the lighter blue and the deep teal.  And I’m exhausted.

Paint
E, RJ and I began painting around 10:30am.  After RJ and I spent an hour taping baseboards and frames.  Within 3 minutes of our project, E had decided sitting on the paint can lid was a good idea.  Then she stepped on it.  They both kicked the drop cloth so there was no drop cloth anywhere near the walls.  They rolled over the tape and onto the baseboard and frame.  No big deal.  Didn’t bother me at all.  But when RJ wiped up an "over-roll" as we call it with a rag we had used to wipe down filthy walls, I got a little tense.  When I looked down and saw she had dropped the filthy rag into the paint tray full of paint, I decided we all needed a break.  I took five.  The girls took the rest of the day.  And the half child wandered in just when I thought I might disinigrate into dust (there goes the plastination was what I was thinking).

The boy took over the top half of the room while I worked the bottom.  Within half an hour it was DONE.  (Except clean up, I am always in charge of cleanup).

Now we’ve got to deal with some spray painting of bookshelves this week, tracking down a dresser that will fit in her closet because she isn’t willing to get rid of any of her three bookshelves (or maybe an under the bed storage thing would work??) and get that painted her weird perriwinkle color.  Oh and she needs a desk chair.  I’m thinking she needs to paint one herself – an unfinished wooden chair that she can paint a seascape on or something would be fun for her.

Now Prince J needs to choose his color and I need a couple of months to recuperate.

Daily Dose of Stuff – IKEA

Michelle’s IKEA furniture has arrived.  The wrong color.  In fact two wrong colors.  But, she’s over it and has decided that this is ok, maybe better than the original choice since her walls are so dark.  She and the half child and one of their friends put the dresser together in about 15 minutes.  I was impressed.  (Not that I’ve seen it, but impressed that it was done so quickly)  The half child and friend have left for band practice and Michelle is putting together nightstand number 1 – alone.  I’m waiting for the "mommmmmm, help meeeeee" from the top of the stairs…

***Update – within about 3 minutes she was at the door asking for help. We put together a MALM nightstand and the IVAR TV Stand. I wanted to do the second MALM nightstand but she was done for the night. Tomorrow leaves the MALM bed, the other nightstand and the NORREBO shelf unit. You can see the first round of photos here. The boys were a little weird. 1/2 child whispering IKEA magic words into the friend’s ear? Hmmm

Daily Dose of Candy – Limited Edition

TW bought me candy on Saturday. This would not be notable if the candy was circus peanuts or caramel cremes or smarties (not the weird Canadian kind) or even jelly bellies. It was notable because this was a candy bar. I don’t really do candy bars. She was excited to tell me this. Excited to say “I bought you a LIMITED EDITION candy bar!” Now that is weird. Usually we buy those weird Limited Edition candy bars for HER, not for me. But this, she said, was definitely not a Limited Edition candy bar that she would ever try. Hmmm.

kitkatorg_1203_1.jpgOn Sunday as I was packing up some stuff for our trip to St Augustine, I got a peek at this special Limited Edition candy bar. Ha! Limited Edition Orange Creme Kit Kat Definitely not something she would eat, EVER. She hates push-up ice cream. She hates orange dreamcicles. I sort of like both, in the way that I sort of like some foods – which is not much but sort of.

Tonight at dinner I mentioned this Limited Edition candy bar to the small kids and they were all interested. When we got home, I pulled out the package and broke off a strip for each child (nice of Hershey’s to give us four strips per Kit Kat, isn’t it?!).

E said “Hey! It’s Orange” oh yes indeedy it was VERY orange. I wasn’t expecting that. I was expecting a normal looking Kit Kat on the outside with orange inside. Weird.

It felt weird in my hand too, not like chocolate but like some weird umm orange coating. Or some fake white chocolate coating maybe.

We all took bites. E really liked it. She was very excited about it. She would definitely buy this again and again and again. Prince J said it was ok but not great, but when I handed him the other half of my strip, he immediately popped it into his mouth. I asked why he was eating more if it was just ok. He laughed and said he just felt like eating it but not because it was great. RJ said it was good and she would occasionally buy it but it was not going to become one of her favorite candy bars because there are so many different kinds of candy bars to choose from and so many that are way better than that one. But once in awhile it would be a nice choice.

E insisted again that this was GOOD and she’d love to have more. She did balk at that when I described at as tasting like a push up ice cream with cornflakes inside. (Which is what it tasted like to me)

If you want to try a pretty good Limited Edition Kit Kat, try the mint instead.

Daily Dose of Kids – Ha!

Here are some things our kids and friends of our kids have said this week:

– 45 minutes is not enough time to write a novel.

– Stay out of it Charles!

– Mom, can I have some money?

– Mommy is culturally illiterate too!

– Does this stay in black and white?

– Those asteroids look like balls of tin foil.

– Denise, you’re so funny!

– Mom, that’s so not funny!

– Denise, you’re the funniest person in the whole world!

– Ummm, that was a joke, right?

– Charles, I’m prettier than you are.

– What’s falafel?  What’s tabouleh?

– Why do you order cherry coke if you don’t like cherry tasting food?

– We like it when Michelle cooks, it’s like she’s our slave!

– I saw Michelle, she had devil horns!  Yea I saw her hair but she had devil horns!

– I want to spend my 16th birthday with my rat, not with my friends and family.

– Yes I did my homework!

– Yes I have all of my books and my papers and my flute.

– I don’t have a lunchbox, silly Denise.

– I want 20 apples in my lunch bag!

– I want 20 cupcakes in my luch bag!

– Yea, mommy must be expecting a hurricane with all of that bottled water in the refrigerator.

– Yes, I brought down all of my tea mugs.

– You didn’t tell me to bring down the used tea bags.

– We hung up about 200 wire coat hangers to decorate for my party.

– Why is Chris always late?

– Music With a Twist?  Sony? Where do we sign??

– We’re not going to church because of my hair, right?

– My shoes are too big and it’s hard to walk but they’re pretty!

– Denise, can you get me all of the books in this series?

– I finished Night, did you?

– We could make three dogs with all of that dog hair.

– Maybe you could just carry Chanel around like a baby or push her in a stroller.

– Yes I can run people over with the bike! Die! Take That! Hahahahaha! See, fun huh?!

– I love potato bread, why don’t you ever buy potato bread?

– Art history and world religions, can I take another one now even though I’ve almost finished my 10th grade requirements?

– Women spend less money at Valentine’s Day because they are shy and afraid if they buy a guy a big gift he won’t like her.

Daily Dose of Michelle – 16

If you read TW’s Wee Hours or you listen to me talk on message boards or you’re a lurkingfamily member (ummm you’d better not be a lurking family member) then you know that yesterday was Michelle’s 16th birthday. If you’re someone other than the aforementioned – well guess what, it was Michelle’s 16th birthday! (and go read TW’s marshmallowy about Michelle post, I don’t do marshmallow!)

We’d done the bulk of the celebrating with Michelle during our trip to Atlanta so yesterday was a little more low-key than she would have liked. She was hoping for a tattoo but I boycotted that ’til we can both agree on the design for said tattoo. She’s described some weird cat eye thing that at first sounded ok but later began to sound like it would look as though she had nipples on her abdomen. So no, no tattoo yesterday.

sweetsixteen_001.jpgI took her to TW’s hair salon for a cut and that was a huge hit. It turned a somewhat low day for all of us into something else entirely. Excitement for her and ummm weird marshmallowy the girl is grown up for us. Dinner at her favorite restaurant with both moms, her brother and the 1/2 child was also a hit for her, not for me or TW – see non-marshmallowy mushrooms post.

sweetsixteen006.jpgFroggy ice cream cake was also a hit, though none of us could have more than a bite (which pleased the cats who nibbled on remnants in the sink all evening). There’s nothing like a little kid frog cake for a 16 year old who is trying to do away with her childhood frog collecting but having difficulty doing so!

A migraine ended the night badly for me and an evening out with her friends ended it well for her. All in all, a happily celebrated sweet 16. We all survived. No blood was shed. No excessive tearyness. Life is good with a 16 year old. Even if it means I am older than dirt and I mean really older than dirt.

Daily Dose of Travel – Atlanta

We’ll be heading to Atlanta soon.  We being me, TW and Michelle.  This weekend will be part of Michelle’s 16th birthday celebration – woohoo!  (Did I sound properly enthusiastic?  Let me try again WOOHOOOO!)

We’re staying at the Beautiful Mid-Town Wyndham.  We’re going shopping at the Junkman’s Daughter (or whatever it’s called) in L5P.  We’re going to hit the bookstore, Charis, that I recently blogged about.  I think we’ll take Michelle to Mary Mac’s ’cause everyone needs to go to a southern tea room, once.  Besides there are tons of vegetarian choices!  The most important part of this trip though is…

IKEA

Michelle is getting a grown up bedroom for her birthday so we’re hitting IKEA in order to do that.  This will be her virgin IKEA visit and only the second visit for me and TW.  Someone remind me to bring the camera!  We’re excited!  WOOHOOOO!

Daily Dose of Memories – Stray Kids

I take in stray kids.  It’s what I do.  When I say I have 6 1/2 kids, the 1/2 child is the stray currently living here part time.  I’ve always done this.  I assume I will always do this.  Luckily, TW is understanding and a stray kid collector too.

Tonight I’m suppose to be writing a challenge or finishing a report or writing a Blogher post but none of those are happening because I’m thinking about a stray kid from long ago.  We lost track of her along the way and she’s resurfaced today.

Aud "lived with us" when we were in Panama.  She didn’t REALLY live with us, but she may as well have.  Her mom was in the Air Force and no dad had been in her life for a very long time.  Her mom worked the odd hours expected of those in the AF and she was a single woman who wanted a social life, too.  So she was busy.  And I was a mom.  And Jenn (the oldest of the brood) was Aud’s best friend.  It made sense for Aud to live with us five days a week. Well mostly it made sense.  Sometimes Jenn was jealous because Michelle adored Aud.  Sometimes Jenn was jealous because she thought I gave Aud special favors or attention that she didn’t get.  Sometimes Jenn just wanted some time to herself, without Aud.  But mostly it made sense.

Aud and her mom headed for Germany while we headed for NJ.  We saw her again the next summer, she came to stay with us but left early because Jenn had moved on and she felt left out of the crowd.  Mostly I think she left because she had turned a corner in her life and the path she had chosen wasn’t Jenn’s.

We lost track of her again for few more years and then out of the blue she called to say mom had kicked her out, she was going to join the Army and don’t worry, she’d keep in touch.  Then she vanished again.  Until today.  Thank you My Space.

Jenn and Michelle tracked her down over Christmas but didn’t tell me in case she didn’t want to be contacted.  She and Jenn have been emailing and calling each other for a few days and Jenn called to tell me tonight.

Apparently after her mom kicked her out, there was more trouble.  Trouble that involves probation and a record and newspaper clippings about "incidents".  Jenn told me where to find the whole story on My Space but you know me, I have "Denise Rules" about such things so I didn’t look.  I looked at her photos and smiled and sent her a message asking her to add me to her friends list.  If she wants me to read her blog, she’ll tell me herself.  Until then, I’ll just sit here and look at the old photos and wonder if things would have been different if we’d kept her with us.  Probably not.  But I still wonder.  And I know I would never have kicked her out when she was 16, not for any reason.

Daily Dose of Parenting – Queer Advice

**Edited to add… click into Dr P’s blog and his comments now.  He was linked in Grand Rounds today and I think we have one example of the kind of parent who would do this.**

I never thought I’d be linking to Dr P’s blog.  I don’t really have much need for pediatric advice (knock on wood).  I’m not even sure why I read Dr P’s blog today.  I clicked it by accident and there I was, looking at "God Bless P-Town".  Huh?  What does P-Town have to do with pediatrics or even Dr P?  I figured I might should read it and find out… even if it is really LONG.

I’ve never actually met anyone who was tossed out by their parents because they came out.  I have met some teens who are sure they will be.  I have one living with me half of the time who insists his parents don’t like his relationship choices (he’s bi) – personally I think they just don’t like his life choices in general but that’s another story – but I don’t think they’ve ever tossed him out for being bi.  I can’t imagine kicking a child out of your home, for any reason.  It was hard enough to watch Michelle leave when she thought she wanted to live with her dad.  Someone suggested recently I shouldn’t let Chris move back in, how could I not?  He’s my child.  Ya know?

How will you deal with your feelings if your child grows up to be other than you want them to be?  Better think about it now, while your children are young – it happens.  Often.
