Day to Day

iPhone is a time suck

I’m not saying bad things about the iPhone when I say it’s a time suck. I’m just sayin… it’s a time suck. Or it can be if you let it. I’m being pretty darn good about NOT letting it but it’s hard. Very tempting when it’s sitting here next to me while I’m working and the sunlight streaming in through the window catches it just right. But no. I’m not giving in – well not too much.

Today when I picked Michelle up from school she was excited to tell me about some dude who installed third party apps on her iPod touch so now she has sudoku and butterfly and AIM. Cool, right? Yea. So cool that during my lunchbreak (the one I rarely take) I tracked down the same installer and grabbed some third party apps for my iPhone. And that, my friends, is a serious time suck.

Here’s what I installed today:

* Butterfly – quickly uninstalled ’cause it’s boring
* Sketches – heh. scroll down ’cause everyone is loving this Etch a Sketch like time suck
* Apollo – for AIM
* Pedometer – fascinating and oddly compelling but not particularly accurate
* iFlickr – uninstalled ’cause I wasn’t thrilled with it but I’m probably going to reinstall it.
* iWoman – because I was fascinated with the idea of tracking your cycle on your iPhone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do anything and wouldn’t let me delete “samples” that were included for some weird reason. Uninstalled.
* Tap Tap Revolution – uninstalled ’cause it either didn’t work or I don’t know how to play it (the latter is most likely)
* Pushr – another flickr tool that I’m also not loving and will probably uninstall
* Vnotes – a voice recorder that’s ok but you seem to have to talk really loudly or really close to the mic. Is there a better one?

So. Yea. I’m tempted to dig back into the installer and try some more stuff. But I won’t ’cause I’m still working and I haven’t even finished setting up my contacts or calendar or even my iTunes. And then there are the maps and the lists of coffee joints and vegetarian restaurants in towns we visit often and are always having to look up the address and directions for.

iPhone is a serious time suck. But it’s fun. Even TW is enjoying it. Every time we get in the car, I drive and she plays with my iPhone. Here’s her “etch a sketch” picture from this afternoon’s trip to Petsmart….

The countdown begins…

and I won’t even be here for the big event. Damn. How did that happen?

Michelle is counting down the days ’til IKEA Orlando opens. Is she going to be really upset when she realizes I’ll be out of town on opening day? (Not that I would have been willing to GO to IKEA on opening day.) Do you think she can con TW into taking her?

Is she going to be upset when she realizes I probably cannot be talked in to going on opening weekend, either?

I think I need to break this news to her gently. Oh shoot. I forgot. She reads my blog.

Cell phones and insanity

It’s 11:45am ET and I’m a little antsy.

My iPhone has been in town, and on the FedEx truck, for hours and it is not here yet. FedEx always delivers stuff to us early. TW’s fob – here early. My contract – here early. Michelle’s iPod Touch – here early. TW’s laptop – here early. My iPhone – soooooo not here early.

I’ve been working all morning, keeping busy so I wouldn’t think about the iPhone that is here, in town, on the FedEx truck.

I’ve also been wondering why my “old” red cell phone hasn’t been ringing this morning. The darn thing rang non-stop yesterday. And, all last week. So much that I tripled my incoming call usage. Normally I’d think it was ringing, and I was missing calls. Ringing when I left it in the car – or in the bedroom while I was outside – or in the office while I was in the garage doing laundry. But no, it’s been in my pocket all day.

Do you want to know why it wasn’t ringing? I’ve got the answer.

It was turned off.

How the hell did that happen?

And where is the FedEx chick?

*Update:* It’s here and the delay was obviously caused by the fact that the delivery person was not the normal FedEx chick but a dumb man who thinks iPhones are dumb.

This is exciting.

Hmmmm, let me think….

I was going to log off without blogging over here today. Nothing really caught my eye or lured me away from a very, very full day of work. Them’s the breaks and it’s not like I’m participating in NaBloPoMo or even if I was, it’s not November. So yea. I was going to blow off blogging. No big deal, I do it often. But then, 30 items away from closing my feedreader for the night – what do I see? The perfect topic for me to blog about.

Could Your Partner Do Your Job?

Perfect, right? So perfect. But damn. I don’t think I can actually blog it without ticking someone off. While some of you might think that I never worry about that, I do. There are a million things I don’t blog for that very reason. Since I can’t blog about whether or not my partner can do my job… how about a list of all of the things I can’t blog about? Or some of the things I can’t blog about.

1) My mother’s ability to tick off certain of my siblings.
2) My mother’s general inability to tick me off – til today when she suggested I was menopausal. (bitch.)
3) The hysterical thing a kid said last night, without prompting.
4) The really dumb thing Michelle said a couple of days ago.
5) The really dumb things Christopher says several times a week.
6) Speaking of Christopher, I’d love to blog a comparison of all of his g/f’s.
7) Jenn and her, ummm, life. (she’s blonde – brilliant but also blonde.)
8) My ex husband and his, errrr, life?
9) My ex job, ex boss, ex co-workers.
10) Sex, sex and more sex – or lack of.

How’s that for a list of things I don’t blog?

I really do wish I could blog about whether or not my partner can do my job. ‘Cause it would be an awesome blog post. Hmmm, password protection might be in order here. What do you think?

Hanks: A Gathering of Community

Hanks Yarn & Fiber opened today in the shopping center very close to my house. We were there and it was fun. I’m not a knitter or a crocheter but I can’t wait to go back tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. Hanks is all about yarn and fiber but it’s a lot more than that. It’s about people. And community. And I’m not just saying this because Ginger, Lorena and Sharon are my friends.

I watched all three of them talk to people they had never met before and help them feel welcome in the store – whether they bought anything or not. The two young girls sitting in the middle of the floor with their Nintendo DS’s were welcomed. Men in kilts, welcomed. Women new to knitting and crochet and spinning, welcomed.

hanks.jpgWhen we walked in the store, from the Publix side, the couches and chairs were full of knitters. Lorena is helping a customer while Sharon laughs the way only Sharon can laugh. Who knows what they were talking about over there…

ginger.jpgGinger was busy at work, spinning a skein of yarn into a ball (Bless her for spinning TW’s new sock yarn and the yarn I bought for my mom’s birthday into balls. The latter, in particular, was not an easy thing to do – and I really really appreciate her patience and her help.)

sharon.jpgSharon, again, happy and laughing. She’s like that in general but opening Hanks is like a dream come true.

hanks-bouncer.jpgThe “bouncer” looking serious about making sure people enjoyed their visit to Hanks.

Care to join me at Hanks tomorrow around 3? Or next week, Tuesday – Thursday, around noon? If you don’t live in Gainesville, and you need some yarn, you can order online. It won’t be the same, but it will still be a great experience.

TW has mislead some people

I’m willing to take responsibility for a lot of things that go wrong around here. I’m also willing to take the blame for stuff. But damn it. Not this time. I do not get blamed or held responsible for the Gator Food issue. That was completely TW’s doing. COMPLETELY.

Do NOT let her fool you into thinking it was me. You know me, I’m perfectly happy not to eat any dinner at all.

TW’s fault. Completely.

Thinking, thinking, thinking

I’m thinking we did not buy enough Billy bookshelves when we went to IKEA.

I’m thinking our copy of Valencia has disappeared, possibly into the hands of one of Chris’s former girlfriends.

I’m thinking about the difference between public and private info.

I’m thinking that I feel like I was hit by a train – or had a glass of red wine – though neither has happened.

I’m thinking TW should not say negative things about The Female Eunuch to Michelle Belle.

I’m thinking it is nap time.

We’re connected

TW and RJ left early this morning for their weekend at the Happiest Place On Earth. It’s very quiet here, with just me and the still sleeping Prince and the mostly sleeping dogs, cats, rat, turtles (wait, I don’t believe the turtles actually sleep) and bird.

I’m making use of the quiet to catch up on my inbox and my feeds. I keep seeing things I want to share with TW or comment about to TW. So every now and then I start to think “OK I’m going to send her an email about this stuff” (like she won’t have enough to read tonight when she gets back to the hotel room.)

But, here’s the weird thing, every time I start to think about sending her an email – she calls me. (Or she has RJ call me.) That’s nice but instead of talking about my feeds or email or blog comments or her message boards, we talk about the weather or the rest stops or the exit ramps at I4. I could still send her that email but every time she calls, it causes me to forget whatever it was I was going to tell her in the first place.

Weird, right?

Memories

Remember my birthday? Remember when I spent a whole weekend catching up on my blog feeds and cleaning out my email boxes? Ah memories, wonderful memories. 10 days have passed. My inboxes are full and I’m behind on both reading blogs and writing blog posts. Damn.

On another note, for those who are even slightly interested in how I am handling “TW’s new job”. Without going into detail, let’s just say I’m amused. Incredibly amused. Everyday. Even when I am bitching because she’s worked 12 hours straight and not fixing me lunch or cooking dinner or assisting with the great IKEA caper of 2007 – I am still amused. It’s quite possible that I’ve never been this amused about anything else in my whole life. Yea, I’m THAT amused. You’d be amused too.

Now – back to work so I can try and play catch up on blog reading, blog writing and library book reading.
