Daily Dose of Travel – The Beach

TW and I have a lot of work to do around the house this summer.  We have a very long list of of things to accomplish before the small kids come home and before school starts for the year.  We’ve made some decent progress, not great but decent.  If we keep going in this manner, we can get most of it done – I think.   This makes me really happy.  I really want these things done.  And yet…

Here I am thinking about dragging TW (and maybe even Michelle) off to the beach for the weekend or maybe even just the day.  It would be good.  Nice. Relaxing. Interesting. Warm.  Gorgeous.  Fun.

We could go just for the day to Anastasia State Park.  The beach there is very, very nice.  Clean and not crowded.  Lifeguards and plenty of good facilities available.  Parking is not a problem.  We could just go in the opposite direction, to the Gulf.  Cedar Key is less than an hour away.  Tiny little beach or I could drag them onto a boat to an island.  We’ve always wanted to do it, but never have.  Michelle would prefer Daytona or Crescent and both would be good.  People watching in both places is something TW and I enjoy very much.

Or maybe a totally new for us beach, I’m surfing the options, it makes for a nice lunchbreak diversion.

The beach is calling… but so is the list of things to do around the house.  Which will win?

Daily Dose of Search

It’s that time again because some of you need some serious help with your searches.

Let’s start with the easy stuff – Melissa Ferrick.  See that little section on the right called "categories"?  Everything I’ve ever posted about Melissa Ferrick is in there.  You may not find all of the answers you are looking for but you will find a lot of them.  Free downloads of her music?  Well you can listen to some of her songs on My Space.  She has a blog there.  You can always find great boots of her shows at Cincheetah’s site.  But really, why don’t you just shell out the money and buy the darn CD?  You want to know if she has an eating disorder?  Ummm, why do you need to know this?  She’s very thin.  She lives on the road.  She has a song about not being able to eat (or sleep).  Isn’t that enough for you?  And to those of you looking for the parody of the Etheridge song – I’m a lesbian – Melissa Ferrick doesn’t sing that.  Give up.  It’s not a very good song.  In fact, it’s pretty ridiculous.  And if you’re a lesbian, is that really a song you would enjoy hearing?  Isn’t Drive enough for you?

To those of you looking for 101 vaginas or a daily nude photo.  Sorry, I only have one vagina and I’m really not planning on exposing it here.  I’m also not interested in posting nude photos.  Naked Jen has a great nude photo blog.  She’s awesome and you should visit her and learn something about why nudity is beautiful and to be celebrated.  If you’re just looking for porn, then apparently Twisty’s is something you would be interested in.

I get a lot of search hits for "Twisty’s" from you European searchers.  Apparently it’s a porn site?  I’m not really sure because I won’t click it.  Twisty Faster’s site is the one I’ve talked about and she’s an awesome feminist patriarchy sucks kind of woman.  She doesn’t do daily porn photos.  She does have amazing photos of her masectomy scars but I somehow think you wouldn’t be interested in those, am I right?

To those looking for Lisa Frank backpacks and lunchboxes – sorry, I can’t help you except to say Walmart and Toys R Us. I wouldn’t recommend you buy them though because they fall apart under regular use by 7 year olds and dogs seem to find them really appealing treats to munch on.   Try a Jansport instead, unless you just enjoy buying multiple lunchboxes and backpacks throughout the year.

I’m not sure who started the 101 things in 1001 days MEME.  Sorry, I just know where I got it.  Click that 101 Things category and scroll to the original post.  Maybe that info is enough for you?

Here’s one that made me laugh and I’m getting at least two searches a day for this… Is Terri Clark Gay?  Umm again I ask – what difference does it make?  Unless you are a woman considering asking her for a date, does her orientation really matter?  And if you are a woman considering asking her on a date, well don’t bother because she is married.  To a man.  So even if she is gay, she’s already spoken for so just enjoy her music and her hats and be thankful for having both in your world.

The biggest and most important big of advice I can give to you folks coming here from search is… pay attention… this is big… The word "DOSE" is not the same thing as the word "DOES".  I understand typos, believe me I do.  I also understand if English is not your first language (you should see me conjugate in Spanish, it is not pretty).  But it really is important, if you want accurate search results, to spell the word "DOES" properly.  "Does size matter?"  "Dose size matter?" — see how they are different?  The answer to the first, well listen to that Terri Clark song called "Girls Lie Too" and the answer to the second would be yes, dose size is important – if you’re giving a toddler tylenol or your g/f her imuran or a person with diabetes some insulin.  Dose size is very important.   Does, Does, Does – get it right, folks.  It will help your search results, I promise.

Now get busy searching, ok?

The Book Thief

Wow! A fictional story set in Nazi Germany that I loved. Amazing. It’s been a very long time since that happened. The Book Thief was excellent. If you haven’t read it, push it up to the top of your “Must Read List”. Skip whatever is on your Summer Reading Challenge list and read this instead.

Maybe it’s the whole “death” thing, how many books are narrated by “death”? Not many that I’ve read, that’s for sure. Death is a good thing, I’ve always known that but The Book Thief has proven it.

Wow!

Daily Dose of Blogs – Mommies & Advertising

I’m taking some TW type advice that she doesn’t know she gave – I’m trying to get a lot of little things done so I’ll feel like I have accomplished something.   Here are some little blog things that I’ve meant to do, but haven’t… in no particular order …

See the left nav there?  If you have a blog or a business and would like to advertise here, I’d love to have you.  In fact I’d love to have you so much that you can have a free ad.  Just click the part that says "advertise here".  Fill out the form and in the offer code box type "flamingo".

Also, did you know I’m a mommyblogger?  No kidding, I really am.  Clubmom says so!  And you can see for yourself if you don’t believe me.  You should click that link everyday.  In fact go ahead and subscribe to it.  Mommyblogging is the best kind of blogging.  You don’t want to miss a single thing.  Particularly the stuff about squeeing over my brother, Billy from Melrose Place.

Daily Dose of Stuff – Monday

July_001
For the last two weekends we’ve been busy little bees, here at the Flamingo House.  TW and I have been cleaning under beds, cleaning out closets, cleaning off shelves and just generally de-cluttering.  Four bedrooms are finished, living room and dining room are finished.  We still need to deal with the office aka library and the garage.

This photo is full of stuff from our house, it’s not trash (that would be another photo which I’m not going to take) but it is junk.  Fun junk, but junk just the same.  Most of which I just shake my head at and wonder "What is this doing in my house".

Kindred – Octavia Butler

I really hate to admit it but this is the first Octavia Butler I’ve read. What in the heck was I waiting for? If Kindred is any indication, I need to read them all – maybe even own them all.

I loved the sci-fi twist on a slavery novel, it’s brilliant. If I met Dana on the street today and she told me her story, I think I’d have to believe her. That’s how brilliant this book was.

After my SRC is over, I’ll want to read more of her work – do you have any suggestions about which I should start with?

Daily Dose of Carnival – UU Style

The very first UU Carnival is live! Peacebang’s “God Talk” posts were terrific, the comments very good and now I can go and track down the responses a lot more quickly and easily because they’re right here in the Carnival! (Insert Deity) Bless the Carnival! Heh.

I am interested in this:

“Unitarian Universalism is my faith community” but not his religion. He makes a distinction between the two and explains the nuances of his position in more depth. Go check it out along with the commentarial “amens!” following the post.

I missed that somehow, and it makes an awful lot of sense to me. I don’t usually say “Amen!” but I’m tempted this morning.

Go read through the carnival yourself, and consider submitting to CC for the next one – umm submitting to CC? You know what I meant, right?

Your bookshelves

A couple of weeks ago, some photos appeared on the Flickr Bookshelf Project Pool feed that have stuck with me all this time. Someone’s books were arranged by color. Intriguing. Today, another photo of books arranged by color appeared on Ed’s Superpatron – Friends of the Library blog and I’ve decided this is the way to go.

A couple of years ago, Michelle attempted to use the little bar scanner to enter all of our books into a database and arranged books by author (fiction) and type (non-fiction). The attempt, while admirable, was not a huge success. We don’t have enough shelves and things got moved around really quickly. And of course, we can never remember author names. We need a new system and I think color is the way to go.

We can often remember the cover of a book. If it’s a classic, there’s a good chance it’s a Penguin which means orange. This color thing is really making sense to me.

How are your books arranged? Do you think the color system is a good idea? Or am I just nuts?

Daily Dose of Cupcake Toppers

Life is a little quiet around here right now and the search phrases you folks are using to find my blog aren’t helping much – there are some things that I simply can’t help you find on this PG13 rated blog. Maybe someday when life is different, I’ll create an Xrated version to help you folks… until then, keep surfing and good luck! Soooo what kind of cupcake toppers should we do today? Hmmmm ok this just popped into my head, it must mean I miss a kid or three, imagine that…. for your favorite candy and gum lover, or your favorite 10 year old…. candy topped cupcakes, what a no-brainer, right?

hfdec070.jpgI’d grab an Oriental Trading Assortment or a cool Retro Candy Assortment (which would be nifty if you were doing a 50’s, 60’s or 70’s theme party) and decorate like mad. Snowcaps, M&Ms, Mike & Ikes, Milk Duds, Wax Lips, Bottle Caps… the possiblities are endless!
